Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eight Lectures on Theoretical Physics: Delivered at Columbia University in 1909 At the request of the Adams Fund Advisory Committee, and with the consent of the author, the following translation of Pro fessor Planck's Columbia Lectures was undertaken. It is hoped that the translation will be of service to many Of those inter ested in the development of theoretical physics who, in spite of the inevitable loss, prefer a translated text in English to an original text in German. Since the time Of the publication of the original text, some of the subjects treated, particularly that Of heat radiation, have received much attention, with the result that some of the points of view taken at that time have under gone considerable modifications. The author considers it de sirable, however, to have the translation conform to the original text, since the nature and extent of these modifications can best be appreciated by reference to the recent literature relat ing to the matters in question. Book excerpt: The present book has for its object the presentation of the lectures which I delivered as foreign lecturer at Columbia University in the spring of the present year under the title: "The Present System of Theoretical Physics." The points of view which influenced me in the selection and treatment of the material are given at the beginning of the first lecture. Essentially, they represent the extension of a theoretical physical scheme, the fundamental elements of which I developed in an address at Leyden entitled: "The Unity of the Physical Concept of the Universe." Therefore I regard it as advantageous to consider again some of the topics of that lecture. The presentation will not and cannot, of course, claim to cover exhaustively in all directions the principles of theoretical physics.-The Author, Berlin, 1909.From the TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE.At the request of the Adams Fund Advisory Committee, and with the consent of the author, the following translation of Professor Planck's Columbia Lectures was undertaken. It is hoped that the translation will be of service to many of those interested in the development of theoretical physics who, in spite of the inevitable loss, prefer a translated text in English to an original text in German. Since the time of the publication of the original text, some of the subjects treated, particularly that of heat radiation, have received much attention, with the result that some of the points of view taken at that time have undergone considerable modifications. The author considers it desirable, however, to have the translation conform to the original text, since the nature and extent of these modifications can best be appreciated by reference to the recent literature relating to the matters in question.-A. P. Wills.

Book The Theory of Electrons and Its Applications to the Phenomena of Light and Radiant Heat

Download or read book The Theory of Electrons and Its Applications to the Phenomena of Light and Radiant Heat written by Hendrik A. Lorentz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Electrons and Its Applications to the Phenomena of Light and Radiant Heat: A Course of Lectures Delivered in Columbia University, New York, in March and April 1906 The publication of these lectures, which I delivered in Columbia University in the spring of 1906, has been unduly delayed, chiefly on account of my wish to give some further development to the subject, so as to present it in a connected and fairly complete form; for this reason I have not refrained from making numerous additions. Nevertheless there are several highly interesting questions, more or less belonging to the theory of electrons, which I could but slightly touch upon. I could no more than allude in a note to Voigt's Treatise on magneto-optical phenomena, and neither Planck's views on radiation, nor Einstein's principle of relativity have received an adequate treatment. In one other respect this book will, I fear, be found very deficient. No space could be spared for a discussion of the different ways in which the fundamental principles may be established, so that, for instance, there was no opportunity to mention the important share that has been taken in the development of the theory by Larmor and Wiechert. It is with great pleasure that I express my thanks to Professor A. P. Wills for his kindness in reading part of the proofs, and to the publisher for the care he has bestowed on my work.
