Our aim has been to make difficult points clear to the pupil without either unduly facilitating the translation or befogging him by elaborate grammatical explanations. The editors have regarded their practical experience in the classroom as their safest guide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book Of Caesar's Gallic War: With a Vocabulary For some long time past it has been widely felt that a reduction in the cost of Classical Works used in schools generally, and more especially in those intended for boys of the middle classes, is at once desirable and not difficult of accomplish ment. For the most part only portions of authors are read in the earlier stages of education, and a pupil is taken from one work to another in each successive half-year or term; so that a book needlessly large and proportionably expensive is laid aside after a short and but partial use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar's Gallic War: Books I-IV The editors have undertaken the task of reediting entirely the well-known Allen and Greenough Caesar to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of modern secondary education. In view of the improvements lately made in the text of Cesar by Meusel and others, they have changed the readings in many places, following chiefly Meusel's as almost a new textus recep tus. Most of the changes will at once commend themselves. The editors have in general been conservative in regard to spelling, especially the new spelling of old Gallic names, feeling that much that is proposed of that kind as yet lacks certainty. But they have adopted the spelling -is for the accusative plural of i-stems in accordance with the prevailing usage. They have allowed themselves full liberty in enriching the notes as to grammar, exegesis, and subject-matter. They have added very full suggestions for parallel reading, and have spared no pains to enrich the study of this famous piece of literature. The trea tises on military affairs and other introductory matters have been rewritten and brought out of the notes under one head, so that a pupil may have a chance to gain some general infor mation before he begins to read. Special attention has been given to indirect discourse, the bugbear of Latin education, and throughout the earlier books the direct form has been. Download or read book The First Book of Caesar s Gallic War written by Arthur W. Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book of Caesar's Gallic War: Edited for the Use of Schools With Norns and Vocabulary This little volume contains the first book of his Commentaries upon these campaigns. In seven books Caesar himself and in an eighth Hir tius, one of his lieutenants, have described the events of eight campaigns carried on chiefly within the limits of Gaul, a country which, in the main corresponding to modern France, also included Switzerland, Belgium, and part of Germany and Italy. Caesar also tells of inciden tal invasions of Germany and Britain which were made probably with no thought of permanent occupation, but merely to insure the more thorough subjugation of Can], which, it was claimed, received aid from Britain and Germany in its uprisings against Rome. In the narra tive, Caesar, though describing in the main his own exploits, nowhere identifies himself with the general whose deeds he is recounting. The first book chronicles the events of two contests carried on during the campaign of b.c. 58, the first with the Helvetii, a Gallic tribe living in a territory nearly identical with modern Switzerland, and the second, also carried on in Gaul, with the Suabians, a German tribe under their king Ariovistus. The latter, when invited by one Gallic tribe to assist it against another, took advantage of the Opportunity offered to seize upon a considerable portion of Gaul for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar's Gallic War: Books I-IV and Selections From V-VII, With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary In preparing this book the editors have tried not to lose sight of the fact that Caesar is commonly put into the hands of young students, immediately after finishing the Beginner's Book, with or without, the preliminary reading of a few chapters of easier Latin. They believe that during the second year of Latin study the pupil should gain the ability to read and to translate more readily, and that he should add to the vocabulary which he may fairly be expected to have acquired during the first year. They believe thoroughly in learning the meanings of words, but they have left the details to the teacher. They would urge that the pupils be taught to read the Latin correctly and readily, not so much for its own sake, as because it is a most valuable aid to correct translation. The long vowels have, therefore, been marked throughout the Text and Vocabulary. At this stage, too, the pupil should learn to translate into good idiomatic English. During the second year the pupil should extend his knowledge of Latin syntax, but he should not be expected to master the entire subject. For their views on that subject the editors would refer to the Note at the beginning of the Grammatical Introduction (p. xxxix).
