Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions about self-disclosure-whether to reveal one's thoughts, feel ings, or past experiences to another person, or the level of intimacy of such disclosure-are part of the everyday life of most persons. The nature of the decisions that a person makes will have an impact on his or her life. They will determine the kinds of relationships the person has with others; how others perceive him or her; and the degree of self knowledge and awareness that the person possesses. The study of self-disclosure has interested specialists from many disciplines, including personality and social psychologists, clinical and counseling psychologists, and communications researchers. Our book brings together the work of experts from these various disciplines with the hope that knowledge about work being done on self-disclosure in related disciplines will be increased. A strong emphasis in each of the chapters is theory development and the integration of ideas about self-disclosure. The book's chapters explore three major areas, including the interrelationship of self-disclosure and personality as well as the role of self-disclosure in the development, maintenance, and deterioration of personal relationships, and the con tribution of self-disclosure to psychotherapy, marital therapy, and counseling.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ''Face Orientation and Self-Disclosure of Ability & Morality: Does Gender Make a Difference?'' Submitted by CHUI-LI Dorothea Lai Shun For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy At the University of Hong Kong in May, 1999 Self-disclosure is the process of letting others know oneself by verbally disclosing aspects of the self (Cozby, 1973). In the helping process, clients'' self-disclosure determines to a very large extent the success of treatment. Face is the positive public image claimed by an individual due to his/her attributes or achievements, which are recognized and approved of by others in their relevant social network. Face orientation is the cognitive recognition, the psychological and the emotional awareness of the presence of face in a face event, including own face and others'' face. Since Chinese are found to have difficulties in disclosing private thoughts and strong emotions (Lin & Lin, 1980), the study of determinants of self- disclosure is pertinent to counseling Chinese clients. As concern of face is "invariant" in Chinese interpersonal relationship (Ho, 1994), and that client''s help seeking is a face event, which involves other-evaluation, it is predicted that there may be a relationship between self-disclosure and face orientation. This research is a study to examine the relationship between these two variables. As gender of the self-discloser always exists in a disclosing situation, it is also important to understand its relationship with self-disclosure and face orientation. In this study, a correlational design was used, employing the survey method and the interview method. In order to measure the self-disclosure and face orientation of the respondents, four indigenous instruments, the Ability Self-Disclosure Scale, Morality Self-Disclosure Scale, the Acquisitive Face Orientation to Ability Scale, and the Protective Face Orientation to Morality Scale, were constructed. These scales were found to possess validity and reliability. In the Survey Study, analysis of the data of 456 questionnaires from working adults of Hong Kong indicated that self-disclosure and face orientation were associated. Individuals with high acquisitive face orientation to ability were more willing to disclose ability topics than low acquisitive face orientation to ability individuals. On the other hand, high protective face orientation to morality individuals were less willing to disclose morality topics than low protective face orientation to morality individuals. It was also found that intimacy of topic was associated with self-disclosure. High intimacy ability topics were more willing to be disclosed than low intimacy ability topics, and low intimacy moral topics were more willing to be disclosed than high intimacy moral topics. Individuals with high acquisitive face orientation to ability were more willing to disclose high intimacy ability topics than the low intimacy ability topics. Likewise, individuals with high protective face orientation to morality were more willing to disclose low intimacy moral topics than high intimacy moral topics. Although face orientation and intimacy of topics had main effects on self-disclosure, there was no interaction effect between them. Contrary to expectation, gender had no effect on se

Book Boundaries of Privacy

Download or read book Boundaries of Privacy written by Sandra Petronio and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a practical theory for why people make decisions about revealing and concealing private information, Boundaries of Privacy taps into everyday problems in our personal relationships, our health concerns, and our work to investigate the way we manage our private lives. Petronio argues that in addition to owning our own private information, we also take on the responsibility of guarding other people's private information when it is put into our trust. This can often lead to betrayal, errors in judgment, deception, gossip, and privacy dilemmas. Petronio's book serves as a guide to understanding why certain decisions about privacy succeed while others fail.

Book Positive and Negative Emotional Writing in Adolescence Gender Differences Benefits and Effects on Self disclosure and Intimacy

Download or read book Positive and Negative Emotional Writing in Adolescence Gender Differences Benefits and Effects on Self disclosure and Intimacy written by Peter Wakefield Winslett and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the opposite end of the disclosure spectrum is the concept of disclosing too much. Studies indicate that persons who reveal inappropriate amounts (in either quality or quantity) of negative experiences sometimes lose social support as people often do not like being around others who are negative. Thus, it seems that mastering an appropriate level of disclosing is important in adolescent adjustment.

Book Communication Intimacy and Close Relationships

Download or read book Communication Intimacy and Close Relationships written by Valerian J. Derlega and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication, Intimacy, and Close Relationships offers an account of the nature of intimate relationships and their effects on people's self-concepts. The development and maintenance of intimate relationships are examined, along with people's motives and goals in pursuing intimacy; the nature of social exchanges in intimate relationships; and the consequences for individuals who find themselves socially isolated. The critical role of communication in intimate relationships is given emphasis. Comprised of seven chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the role of self-disclosure in intimate relationships as well as the risks that individuals incur when they self-disclose. The next chapter presents a cognitive interaction model of the nature of intimacy and intimate relationships within the context of cognitive-social learning theory and a systems theory approach to communication. The effect of people's motives on relationships is then considered, together with the role of two fundamental human motives - power and intimacy - on love and friendship. The remaining chapters focus on the importance of the identification process - that is, how people fix their own and others' identities in social interaction - in developing relationships; patterns of nonverbal exchange in close relationships; how and why loneliness occurs; and the nature of social exchange processes in intimate relationships. The book concludes with an epilogue that provides a perspective on why people may find it difficult or easy to form intimate relationships. This monograph should be a valuable resource for psychologists and sociologists.
