Book Protecting Red Oak Seedlings with Tree Shelters in Northwestern Pennsylvania

Download or read book Protecting Red Oak Seedlings with Tree Shelters in Northwestern Pennsylvania written by Russell S. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintenance of oak species and a lack of oak regeneration are major silvicultural problems in many upland oak forests of the Eastern United States. Advance oak regeneration where present generally is small and lacks vigor. As a result, artificial regeneration is sometimes used, but planted oak seedlings usually do not grow well. Plastic tree shelters have been used to protect planted and natural oak seedlings from deer browsing and to promote seedling height growth and survival. This study examined the growth and survival of planted and natural red oak seedlings and seedlings from planted acorns within translucent tree shelters, fences, and unprotected controls with and without herbicide application under a shelterwood seed-cut stand. After 2 years, surviving control planted seedlings were significantly shorter than those protected by tree shelters and fences. The average height of seedlings planted within tree shelters and fences was 0.88 foot and was not significantly different. Planted control seedlings were shorter after the second year than the first, suggesting that these unprotected seedlings had been browsed by deer. The best survival of planted seedlings was inside the fences, with and without herbicide. Survival in shelters was 82 percent when herbicide was used and 40 percent without herbicide, probably due to low light intensity. Survival of planted control seedlings was unsatisfactory whether or not herbicide was applied, likely the result of browsing. Only 16 percent of the acorns planted within shelters produced seedlings and none grew outside of shelters. Small mammals destroyed most planted acorns. Natural seedlings grew little and their height inside and outside of shelters was not different from that of planted seedlings. Recommendations based on these results should improve results when tree shelters are used.

Book Development of Red Oak Seedlings Using Plastic Shelters on Hardwood Sites in West Virginia

Download or read book Development of Red Oak Seedlings Using Plastic Shelters on Hardwood Sites in West Virginia written by H. Clay Smith and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastic shelters were used to grow red oak seedlings on good-to-excellent Appalachian hardwood growing sites in north central West Virginia. Preliminary results indicate that shelters have the potential to stimulate development of red oak seedling height growth, especially if height growth continues once the seedling tops are above the 5-foot-tall shelters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Environment: Survival and Sustainability, held at the Near East University, Nicosia, Northern Cyprus 19-24 February 2007, dealt with environmental threats and proposed solutions at all scales. The 21 themes addressed by the conference fell into four broad categories; Threats to Survival and Sustainability; Technological Advances towards Survival and Sustainability; Activities and Tools for Social Change; Defining Goals for Sustainable Societies. Activities and tools that move the society towards greater sustainability were emphasized at the conference. These included environmental law and ethics, environmental knowledge, technology and information systems, media, environmental awareness, education and lifelong learning, the use of literature for environmental awareness, the green factor in politics, international relations and environmental organizations. The breadth of the issues addressed at the conference made clear the need for greatly increased interdisciplinary and international collaboration the survival and sustainability concept. The exchanges at the conference represent a step in this direction.

Book Tree Planting in Scrub Oak Areas After Site Preparation with Heavy Equipment

Download or read book Tree Planting in Scrub Oak Areas After Site Preparation with Heavy Equipment written by William Everett McQuilkin and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, started a long-term watershed study in a scrub oak area on the Pocono Plateau. The experimental area, comprising about 2,000 acres, was designated as the Dilldown Unit of the Deleware-Lehigh Experimental Forest; it will be referred to hereafter in this paper simply as Dilldown. The study called for conversion of the shrubby cover to a cover of true tree species after a 5-year or longer period for calibrating the watershed. In some places, where sprouts of tree species were abundant, the conversion was to rely on natural growth under fire protection. Elsewhere--on more than one-half the area--conversion was to be accomplished by planting. Experiments were started in 1948 to determine how the planting should be done. The results and implications of those experiments are summarized in this paper. Beginning in 1955, conversion plantings on the Dilldown watershed, and subsequently in several other locations, were done by methods developed in the experiments. The results in these action programs also will be briefly described.

Book Effects of Planting Date on Outplant Performance of Cold stored and Fresh lifted Black Walnut Red Oak and Silver Maple Seedlings

Download or read book Effects of Planting Date on Outplant Performance of Cold stored and Fresh lifted Black Walnut Red Oak and Silver Maple Seedlings written by F. W. Von Althen and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1986 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the ideal planting season extends only from the end of April to the middle of May, its extension is highly desirable because of manpower and equipment factors as well as location of planting sites and planting quality. To determine if overwinter cold storage could be as effective for other hardwood species as it appears to be for sugar maple, cold-stored and fresh-lifted black walnut, red oak, and silver maple seedlings were planted at two-week intervals from 21 April to 16 June 1981. This report presents the three-year results of seedling survival and height increment and makes recommendations on optimum planting periods for southwestern Ontario.
