Book excerpt: Research on psychological contract breach has referenced social exchange as its dominant theoretical foundation. In this study, we draw insights from the group value model as a theoretical extension to explain employees' negative responses to psychological contract breach. According to the group value model, fair treatment by group members communicates symbolic messages about the relationship between the organization and the employee, and has implications for whether employees can take pride in their organizational membership. When people are treated unfairly, they lose trust in the organization and dis-identify from the group. This in turn results in less willingness on the part of the employees to engage in organizational citizenship behaviours (OCBs). We tested these relationships across three studies. In Study 1, we conducted a longitudinal test of the role of trust as a mediator between breach and organizational identification. In Studies 2 (cross-sectional) and 3 (longitudinal), we tested the complete model in which we examined the role of trust and identification in mediating the link between breach and OCBs. All three studies provided support for the mediated model. Furthermore, as predicted by the group value model, the hypothesized relationships emerged in response to relational but not transactional contract breaches. Theoretical and applied implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the effects of psychological contract breach on attitudinal and behavioral job outcomes including job satisfaction, intention to remain with one's organization, perceived organizational support, and organizational citizenship behaviors. Additionally, the present study also examined whether the effect of the psychological contract breach on these job outcomes varied based on the type of psychological contract an employee had (i.e., transactional or relational). A total of 89 part- and full-time employees participated in this study. Results showed that the breach of one's psychological contract had a significant effect on one's job satisfaction, intention to remain, and perceived organizational support. Additionally, there was a significant interaction between psychological contract breach and psychological contract type such that when employees experienced a breach of their psychological contract, the effect of the psychological contract breach on perceived organizational support and organizational citizenship behaviors varied depending on psychological contract type.

He was mentor and personal friend to one of us, and his work had a profound intellectual influence on both of us. We were both strongly influenced by Thibaut's insightful articulation of the importance to psychology of the concept of pro cedural justice and by his empirical work with Laurens Walker in reactions to legal institu demonstrating the role of procedural justice tions. The great importance we accord the Thibaut and Walker work is evident throughout this volume. If anyone person can be said to have created an entire field of inquiry, John Thibaut created the psychological study of procedural justice. (To honor Thibaut thus in no sense reduces our recognition of the contributions of his co-worker, Laurens Walker, in the creation of the field. We are as certain that Walker would endorse our statement as we are that Thibaut, with characteristic modesty, would demur from it. ) Even to praise Thibaut in this fashion falls short of recognizing all of his contributions to procedural justice. Not only did he initiate the psy chological study of the topic, he also built much of the intellectual foun dation upon which the study of procedural justice rests. Thibaut's work with Harold Kelley (1959; Kelley & Thibaut, 1978) created a social psy chological theory of interdependence that, among many other applica tions, serves as the basis for one of the major models of the psychology of procedural justice.

First, it tested the effects of the type of perceived psychological contract breach, equity sensitivity, and identity salience on an important employee outcome, namely organizational citizenship behaviors. Second, the research explored the effects that discipline and pharmacist status have on organizational citizenship behaviors. More precisely, the effect of equity sensitivity on the relationships between identity salience (discipline or school), type of perceived contract breach (administrative or professional) and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors toward the School of Pharmacy by pharmacy school faculty was examined. Methods: Existing organizational citizenship, identity salience and contract breach measures were modified. A series of hypotheses were tested in a random sample of pharmacy school faculty members. The hypotheses suggest equity sensitivity, identity salience, and perception of contract breach will influence the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. Further they assert that equity sensitivity will moderate the relationships between contract breach, identity salience, and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. Results: The data indicate that the degree to which one identifies with the School of Pharmacy has an impact on their performance of extra role behaviors directed toward the School. As expected, this research indicates that the more benevolent an individual is the more likely they are to perform citizenship behaviors. Contrary to expectations, contract breach was not found to influence the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. Analysis also revealed that equity sensitivity does not moderate these relationships. In addition to these findings this work has revealed a rich area for future research. It uncovered significant differences between those faculty members who are pharmacy practice and/or who are licensed pharmacist and those who are not. These groups differ on school of pharmacy identity, discipline identity, equity sensitivity, perceived administrative breach and the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors. These findings suggest that academic as well as healthcare leadership should consider several individual and organizational factors when seeking to increase the performance of organizational citizenship behaviors.
