Book Effects of Microstructure Composition and Strength on the Strength Differential Phenomenon Observed in HY 80 Steel

Download or read book Effects of Microstructure Composition and Strength on the Strength Differential Phenomenon Observed in HY 80 Steel written by Marcel L. Salive and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel from 22 heats of low-carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steel (MIL-S-16216G and ASTM A543-65) were heat treated to study the effects on the strength-differential effect and the difference between tensile and compressive yield strength of (1) commercial variation in composition and inclusion content, (2) variation in microstructure such as prior austenitic grain size and the relative amount of isothermally produced ferrite or bainite in a tempered martensitic matrix, and (3) the observed variation in strength obtained after a 1-hour 1150 F temper followed by a water quench to prevent embrittlement while cooling from the temperating temperature. The difference between the tensile and compressive yield strength, sometimes called the strength differential (S-D) effect, was observed in this study to be at least 5 percent of the tensile yield strength. Data are cited to show that in the low-carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steels studied here, the S-D effect observed was a relatively constant percent of the tensile yield strength, and was markedly structure-sensitive to prior austenitic grain size, microstructural constituents, tempering temperature, type and distribution of carbides formed during tempering, and tempering slightly above the lower critical temperature. Book The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High strength Steel

Download or read book The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High strength Steel written by John Henry Bucher and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the relationship of elements of microstructure to the fracture characteristics of a group of commercially produced steels, heat-treated to ultra-high strength levels. The microstructures were characterized in terms of optical microscopy, electron diffraction, and electron fractography. Fractographic studies were made of fractured surfaces broken in impact at +25 and -196 C as a function of tempering temperature, in slow bending at ambient temperature, in a modified bend test in which slow and fast propagation stages were effected, and on surfaces produced in tensile fractures. The fracture characteristics were studied by means of an instrumented bend test and in terms of the plastic instability generated in the torsion test. The instrumented bend test yielded data on criteria for the onset of slow crack propagation and for the onset of rapid propagation, including the effect of the total stored energy in the system. Plastic instability in torsion was studied as a function of specimen section size in AISI 4340 steel. A 250,000 psi yield strength Maraging steel was studied in a standard size test bar. (Author).

Book Evolution of Microstructure during Long term Creep of a Tempered Martensite Ferritic Steel

Download or read book Evolution of Microstructure during Long term Creep of a Tempered Martensite Ferritic Steel written by Ali Aghajani Bazazi and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tempered martensite ferritic steels are used for critical components in fossil fired power plants that operate in the creep range. The materials contain a high density of dislocations and precipitates form on all types of internal interfaces, the majority of which represent subgrain boundaries. Most previous studies suffer from either only relating to short term creep experiments or from being incomplete in not considering all relevant elements of the microstructure. No systematic effort was made to investigate the evolution of microstructures under conditions of long term creep. In the present study the evolution of the microstructure of a 12% Cr tempered martensite ferritic steel was investigated under conditions of long term aging and creep. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques were used to characterize materials from interrupted creep tests (0.5%, 1%, 1.6% and rupture at 11.9%; creep conditions: 550°C, 120 MPa, rupture time: 139 971 h). It is shown that subgrains coarsen, that the close correlation between carbides and subgrain boundaries loosens during long term creep, and that the frequency of small angle boundaries increases. In addition, the evolution of dislocation densities during long term aging and creep was studied using high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). During aging the dislocation density remains constant, while during long term creep the dislocation density continuously decreases. All these elementary deformation processes have already been discussed in short term creep studies. The present study shows that they also govern long term creep, however, during long term creep, precipitation and coarsening reactions occur which are not observed during short term creep. Cr rich M23C6, VX carbides and Laves phase were identified as the major precipitates in the microstructure of the 12% Chromium tempered martensite ferritic steel. Their chemical compositions, sizes, volume fractions and number densities were evaluated in all interrupted specimens. M23C6 particles coarsen and establish their equilibrium concentration after 51072 hours. VX particles are stable. The Laves phase particles do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium as they form and grow during long term creep. This is due to Silicon which is found in the Laves phase particles and which diffuses slowly in the steel matrix.

Book The Microstructure Hardness Impact Toughness Tensile Deformation and Final Fracture Behavior of Four Specialty High Strength Steels

Download or read book The Microstructure Hardness Impact Toughness Tensile Deformation and Final Fracture Behavior of Four Specialty High Strength Steels written by Manigandan Kannan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Pathbreaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment and corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. This thesis report will attempt to elaborate upon the specific influence of composition, microstructure, and secondary processing techniques on both the static (uni-axial tensile) and dynamic (impact) properties of the four high strength steels AerMet®100, PremoMet(TM)290, 300M and Tenax(TM) 310. The steels were manufactured and marketed for commercial use by CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY, Inc (Reading, PA, USA). The specific heat treatment given to the candidate steels determines its microstructure and resultant mechanical properties spanning both static and dynamic. Test specimens of the steels were precision machined and conformed to standards specified and prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) for both tensile tests and Charpy V-Notch impact tests. Based on similarity of the secondary processing technique the candidate specialty steels were divided into two groups: (i) AerMet®100 and PremoMet(TM)290, (ii) 300M and Tenax(TM)310. The impact toughness response and resultant fracture behavior of the steels were studied at different temperatures ranging from -180°C to +170°C. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature and the final fracture behavior of the candidate steel was established at both the macroscopic and fine microscopic levels. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing the impact toughness, quasi static deformation and final fracture behavior of each of the chosen high strength steels will be elaborated upon in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of composition, intrinsic microstructural effects, and nature of loading.
