Book excerpt: Effects of a variable contact load on the high cycle fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6AL-4V were investigated. Experimental tests were performed using a new test setup capable of applying a contact load varying in amplitude, frequency, and phase and independently measuring shear forces on opposite sides of a specimen. Finite element analysis (FEA) of experimental and idealized loading conditions was performed and local mechanistic parameters and the Modified Shear Stress Range (MSSR) fatigue parameter were determined. Correlations between contact width, slip amplitude, fatigue life and a variable contact load were established with variable contact loading shown to have a damaging effect. Predicted values of crack location and orientation using the MSSR parameter were verified experimentally. The MSSR parameter unsuccessfully predicted fatigue life for variable contact loads. A new formulation of the MSSR parameter is proposed.

Book excerpt: The effect of contact pressure on fretting fatigue behavior has been studied using a high strength steel and a Ti-6Al-4V alloy. In steel, at higher stress amplitude, the fretting fatigue life decreased monotonously with increasing contact pressure. At lower stress amplitude, it exhibited a minimum at a low contact pressure and a maximum at an intermediate contact pressure, then decreased again and became constant at high contact pressures. The fretting fatigue strength at 107 cycles was high at an intermediate contact pressure. In titanium alloy, the fretting fatigue life showed a similar contact pressure dependence. The frictional force increased monotonously with increasing contact pressure. The initiation site of the main crack depended on the contact pressure and had a close relation to the width of stick region at the fretted area. The contact pressure dependence was discussed in terms of stress concentration at the fretted area.

In order to investigate the effects of bridge pad shapes, the fretting fatigue tests were carried out by using four types of bridge pad with different leg height h*. The fretting fatigue strength decreased with decreasing in the h*. Also, the stick area increased as increasing of the h*. The contact pressure distribution was measured by strain gauge and calculated by using a finite element method in order to investigate the effect of the pads leg height h*. The contact pressure concentrated in the inside on the contact surface where the main crack initiated. Two-stage tests were carried out in order to investigate the fretting fatigue damage. The two-stage test was performed to a certain cycles under fretting condition and then plain tests without fretting as removing the pads were continued.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to evaluate fretting fatigue damage of Ti-6Al-4V under flat-on-flat contact at room temperature. Results were obtained to establish the fatigue limit of the material. Axial stresses necessary to fail specimens at 107 cycles for different contact radii, applied normal stresses, and stress ratios were evaluated to determine the baseline fretting fatigue behavior. Then, the effect of fretting fatigue on specimen life was quantified by conducting interrupted fretting tests for various load ratios and normal stresses followed by residual strength uniaxial fatigue tests. Fractography was used to characterize the nature of fretting damage. Results indicate that no degradation in fatigue limit is observed when the material is subjected to up to 10 percent of fretting fatigue life.

At a low contact load, however, the fretting fatigue life increased with an increase in pad radius even though the frictional force was independent of the radius.

The cracks which grow may either originate from some pre-existing macroscopic defect, or, if the component is of high integrity but highly stressed, a region of localized stress concentration. In turn, such concentrators may be caused by some minute defect, such as a tiny inclusion, or inadvertent machining damage. Another source of surface damage which may exist between notionally 'bonded' components is associated with minute relative motion along the interface, brought about usually be cyclic tangential loading. Such fretting damage is quite insidious, and may lead to many kinds of problems such as wear, but it is its influence on the promotion of embryo cracks with which we are concerned here. When the presence of fretting is associated with decreased fatigue performance the effect is known as fretting fatigue. Fretting fatigue is a subject drawing equally on materials science and applied mechanics, but it is the intention in this book to concentrate attention entirely on the latter aspects, in a search for the quantification of the influence of fretting on both crack nucleation and propagation. There have been very few previous texts in this area, and the present volume seeks to cover five principal areas; (a) The modelling of contact problems including partial slip under tangentialloading, which produces the surface damage. (b) The modelling of short cracks by rigorous methods which deal effectively with steep stress gradients, kinking and closure. (c) The experimental simulation of fretting fatigue.

Book excerpt: The plain and fretting fatigue behavior was studied of a ?-base TiAl intermetallics at 675°C in air. he TiAl material was produced by the XDTM process and had a nominal composition of Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Mn+0.8vol%TiB2. The contact material was Inconel 718. The reduction of fatigue strength by fretting was very small (around 20%) compared to metallic materials (3060%). The plain and fretting fatigue S-N curves were flat, which resembled the behavior of ceramic materials. The flat S-N curves are corresponding to the very steep crack growth curve reported for TiAl-based materials containing TiB2. A fretting fatigue crack nucleated in the very late stage of fatigue life (later than 0.75Nf), while it is known to nucleate in the very early stage of fatigue life (less than few percent of Nf) for steels. The fatigue lifetimes of this material were suggested to be determined by the cycles needed for nucleation of a crack rather than by crack propagation.
