A pragmatic interpretivist research approach asked if working memory and general intelligence could be improved for students. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine whether the computerized program Jungle Memory® could improve working memory for intermdeiate grade students. The study followed the Baddeley and Hitch theoretical framework of working memory. Data were collected from pre and post assessments in working memory and general ability. Verbal working memory and general ability did not increase after the intervention using the Jungle Memory® brain training program. Book excerpt: The last forty years of research have demonstrated that working memory (WM) is a key concept for understanding higher-order cognition. To give an example, WM is involved in reading comprehension, problem solving and reasoning, but also in a number of everyday life activities. It has a clear role in the case of atypical development too. For instance, numerous studies have shown an impairment in WM in individuals with learning disabilities (LD) or intellectual disabilities (ID); and several researchers have hypothesized that this can be linked to their difficulties in learning, cognition and everyday life. The latest challenge in the field concerns the trainability of WM. If it is a construct central to our understanding of cognition in typical and atypical development, then specific intervention to sustain WM performance might also promote changes in cognitive processes associated with WM. The idea that WM can be modified is debated, however, partly because of the theoretical implications of this view, and partly due to the generally contradictory results obtained so far. In fact, most studies converge in demonstrating specific effects of WM training, i.e. improvements in the trained tasks, but few transfer effects to allied cognitive processes are generally reported. It is worth noting that any maintenance effects (when investigated) are even more meagre. In addition, a number of methodological concerns have been raised in relation to the use of: 1. single tasks to assess the effects of a training program; 2. WM tasks differing from those used in the training to assess the effects of WM training; and 3. passive control groups. These and other crucial issues have so far prevented any conclusions from being drawn on the efficacy of WM training. Bearing in mind that the opportunity to train WM could have a huge impact in the educational and clinical settings, it seems fundamentally important to shed more light on the limits and potential of this line of research. The aim of the research discussed here is to generate new evidence on the feasibility of training WM in individuals with LD and ID. There are several questions that could be raised in this field. For a start, can WM be trained in this population? Are there some aspects of WM that can be trained more easily than others? Can a WM training reduce the impact of LD and ID on learning outcomes, and on everyday living? What kind of training program is best suited to the promotion of such changes?

Book excerpt: This study examines the effectiveness of a computerized, cognitive intervention on the working memory capacity and mathematical performance of elementary students from an urban school. Working memory and mathematics performance were measured using two subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (Wechsler, 2003), the Calculation subtest from the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery - Third Edition (Woodcock, McGrew & Mather, 2001), and the Math Concepts and Applications (MCAP) and Math Calculation (MCBM) assessments from AIMSweb®. Results were analyzed using a paired samples t-tests to evaluate if working memory and mathematics performance scores significantly increased after the cognitive intervention. Results reflected significant differences in working memory capacity and mathematical performance after the intervention. Implications of these results, future research directions, and tips for using cognitive interventions within an RTI framework are discussed.

Book excerpt: Working memory capacity is thought to play an important role for a wide range of cognitive and noncognitive skills such as fluid intelligence, math, reading, the inhibition of pre-potent impulses or more general self-regulation abilities. Because these abilities substantially affect individuals' life trajectories in terms of health, education, and earnings, the question of whether working memory (WM) training can improve them is of considerable importance. However, whether WM training leads to improvements in these far-transfer skills is contested. Here, we examine the causal impact of WM training embedded in regular school teaching by a randomized educational intervention involving a sample of 6-7 years old first graders. We find substantial immediate and lasting gains in working memory capacity. In addition, we document relatively large positive effects on geometry skills, reading skills, Raven's fluid IQ measure, the ability to inhibit pre-potent impulses and self-regulation abilities. Moreover, these far-transfer effects emerge over time and only become fully visible after 12-13 months. Finally, we document that 3-4 years after the intervention, the children who received training have a roughly 16 percentage points higher probability of entering the academic track in secondary school.

Book excerpt: The role of working memory (WM) in disorders of attention and learning is well established in the literature, some suggesting that low working memory may be a core deficit in AD/HD. As such, computerized cognitive interventions to improve WM have been developed and shown promise by demonstrating training effects such as improved attention and fluid reasoning. However, debate continues as to whether adaptive training leads to improvement on non-trained tasks. Little research has demonstrated improvements that generalize to "real life" WM or attention. The current study examined the effectiveness of WM training on real-world attention performance. Participants included 15 children, ages 6-15, identified as having learning and attention problems. Both before and after completing 5 weeks of WM training, each child was assessed via the Virtual Classroom Continuous Performance Task, a validated measure of sustained attention set within a virtual environment. Results suggested that WM training led to substantial improvements in sustained attention in a real life scenario (classroom learning), as evidenced by decreases in omission errors, reaction time, and hit variability. Observing such improvements on ecologically relevant measures of attention adds to the discussion that computerized WM training may be a viable option to treat attention disorders.

We investigated executive functioning in conjunction with working memory training to see if aspects of executive functioning might improve. We tested 21 children either receiving academic services because of attention difficulties or referred with concerns about learning. Their average age at baseline was 10.1 years, and Verbal Comprehension Indices on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition ranged from 94 to 154. They each completed 25 CogmedTM computer sessions of adaptive interactive working memory training. Parents and teachers completed the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning, and our neuropsychological batteries included A Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment - Second Edition (NEPSY-II) Auditory Attention/Response Set and Inhibition subtests.
