Book Effect of Water Immersion on Fiber Matrix Adhesion in Thermoplastic Composites

Download or read book Effect of Water Immersion on Fiber Matrix Adhesion in Thermoplastic Composites written by Thomas Juska and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics were tested for the effect of water immersion on fiber/matrix adhesion. The materials evaluated were E/PPS, AS4/PPS, E/J2, AS4/J2, S2/PEEK, AS4/PEEK, S2/PEKK, AS4/PEKK, and S2/VECTRA. These materials were tested in uniaxial compression, transverse flexure, and short beam shear, both dry and water-conditioned. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the quality of the fiber/matrix bond. The carbon reinforced materials retained adhesion after water immersion. However, the glass reinforced thermoplastics were in general degraded by water, which hydrolyzed the fiber/matrix bond and significantly reduced mechanical properties ... Book Effect of Water Immersion on Fiber Matrix Adhesion

Download or read book Effect of Water Immersion on Fiber Matrix Adhesion written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made on the effect of water immersion on fiber/matrix adhesion in composites. Representatives of the four main classes of continuous fiber composites were tested: glass/thermoset, carbon/thermoset, glass/ thermoplastic, and carbon/thermoplastic. Water conditioning was done by immersion in 50 deg C distilled water. The only class of composites degraded by water was glass-reinforced thermoplastics. However, carbon-reinforced vinyl esters, a subset of the carbon/thermoset class, appear to have weak fiber/matrix bonds when dry, and these bonds are further degraded by water. In both cases, immersion in water hydrolyzed the interfacial bonds and caused large, irrecoverable property reductions.

All this development has been made possible through adopting novel ways for finishing textiles, e.g., by appropriate surface modification techniques, and utilizing biomimetic concepts borrowed from nature. This unique book is divided into four parts: Part 1: Recent Developments/Current Challenges in Textile Finishing; Part 2: Surface Modification Techniques for Textiles; Part 3: Innovative Functionalities of Textiles; Part 4: Fiber-Reinforced Composites. The topics covered include: Antimicrobial textile finishes; flame retardant textile finishing; "self-cleaning" or easy-to-clean textiles; metallization of textiles; atmospheric pressure plasma, and UV-based photochemical surface modification of textiles; tunable wettability of textiles; 3D textile structures for fog harvesting; textile-fixed catalysts; medical textiles as substrates for tissue engineering; and fiber-reinforced "green" or "greener" biocomposites and the relevance of fiber/matrix adhesion.

Book Nanoscience Friction And Rheology On The Nanometer Scale

Download or read book Nanoscience Friction And Rheology On The Nanometer Scale written by Ernst Meyer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friction force microscopy is an important analytical tool in the field of tribology on the nanometer-scale. The contact area between the probing tip and the sample is reduced to some square nanometers, corresponding to the ideal of a single asperity contact. Traditional concepts, such as friction coefficients, adhesion and elasticity and stick-slip are re-examined with this novel technique. New concepts based upon classical and quantum mechanics are investigated.

Book Interfacial Bonding Characteristics in Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Download or read book Interfacial Bonding Characteristics in Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites written by Senthilkumar Krishnasamy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general overview of the importance of fibre-matrix interfacial bonding characteristics in natural fibre-based composites to obtain optimal material properties for a specific application. Composites materials are prepared by combining fibres and polymers to achieve superior materials properties than those of the individual components. Composite materials are used to produce lightweight components with increased stiffness and strength; their properties can also be tailored for any specific applications. The glass fibre reinforced composites dominate 95% of the thermoplastic and thermoset-based composites. However, the natural fibre reinforced composites can give competition to the glass fibres due to their advantages such as biodegradability, low density, low cost, and good mechanical properties. This book looks into biocomposites and its important aspect of optimization of materials’ performance by fine-tuning the fibre-matrix bonding characteristics. The chapters in the book look at different plant fibres such as kenaf, pineapple leaf, jute, date palm, luffa, cotton, hemp, wood, bamboo, flax, and straw and the different approaches to enhance the fibre-matrix interfacial bonding through physical and/or chemical treatment methods. It demonstrates that the nature of fibre-matrix bonding has a significant effect on the properties such as tensile, flexural, impact, inter-laminar shear strength, moisture absorption, thickness swelling, thermal, chemical, damping, creep, and fatigue. Its content appeals to academics, students, researcher, and scientist who are working in the field to produce biodegradable and recyclable materials in the composite industry.
