Book excerpt: Although most plates for submarine hulls are not normally stress-relieved, highly deformed hull plates are stress-relieved and plates for other applications may require stress relieving. Therefore, a study was initiated to determine the effect of stress relieving for times up to 125 hours in the temperature range 950 to 1050 F on the properties of quenched and tempered plates of the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V experimental HY-130/150 steel. In addition, the effect of tempering for similar times and temperatures on the properties of quenched plates was determined. For comparison, similar studies were conducted on an open-hearth and on an electric-furnace HY-80 steel. The tempering study showed that the 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel was more resistant to softening during long-time tempering than the HY-80 steels and that its Charpy V-notch energy absorption in the yieldstrength range 130 to 150 ksi was higher than those of the HY-80 steels. For laboratory screening of experimental steels, fracture toughness can be most conveniently determined from Charpy V-notch impact tests. However, fracture-toughness values obtained from drop-weight and explosion-bulge tests are also important, and correlations between these tests and the Charpy V-notch test have not been established for steels having yield strengths in the range 130 to 150 ksi. Therefore, the Applied Research Laboratory conducted Charpy V-notch and drop-weight tests of 1/2- and 1-inchthick plates of four experimental HY-130/150 steels (3 3/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5 1/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5Ni-CrMo-V, and 7 1/2Ni-Cr-Mo steels) and HY-80 steel (heat-treated to a yield strength of 150 ksi) to determine the relation between Charpy V-notch and drop-weight test criteria and to determine the best method for obtaining fracture-toughness values to screen experimental HY-130/150 steels. The results indicated that for HY-130/150 type steels, the drop-weight test nil-ductility temperature (NDT) can be estimated from Charpy Vnotch test data by determining the temperature corresponding to an energy absorption of about 40 ft-lb, a shear fracture of about 50 percent, or a lateral expansion of about 20 mils. Book excerpt: Five selected steels (3Ni-Cr-Mo-Cb, 3Ni-Cr-Mo, 5Ni-Cr-Mo, and two 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels) containing 0.22 to 0.27 percent carbon were evaluated after tempering at appropriate temperatures to determine their suitability as HY-180/210 steels. The results indicated generally that the five steels had adequate hardenability for 4-inch-thick plates and that yield strengths of about 185 ksi were attained at a carbon content of 0.25 percent carbon when the steels were tempered at temperatures in the range 400 to 1000 F. In addition, none of the steels was significantly embrittled by tempering. At a yield strength of 185 ksi, none of the steels met the tentative minimum toughness (50 ft-lb at 0 F) for an HY-180/210 base metal. However, the 3Ni-Cr-MoCb steel and the 0.22C 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel appear capable of meeting the toughness requirement at a yield strength of about 182 ksi in 1/2-inch-thick plates and of about 175 ksi in 4-inch-thick plates.
