This collection contains 75 papers and 321 abstracts presented at conferences sponsored by the Water Resources Engineering (Hydraulics) Division of ASCE from 1991 through 1998. The collection contains many new and expanded versions of the original papers and is designed to assist the practitioner with the concepts in evaluating stream instability and scour at bridges. Topics include: history of bridge scour research; bridge scour determination; stream stability and geomorphology; construction scour; instrumentation for measuring and monitoring; field measurement; computer and physical modeling of bridge scour; scour at culverts; and economic and risk analysis. One important paper contains 384 field measurements of local scour at piers made by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Book Prediction of the Backwater Level Due to Bridge Constriction in Waterways

Download or read book Prediction of the Backwater Level Due to Bridge Constriction in Waterways written by Kimia Haji Amou Assar and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Worldwide, bridges and culverts built across rivers are obstacles to the flow which cause an increase in water depth at the upstream of the structure that significantly intensifies flooding of land and property upstream. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of bridges and culverts on water levels for flood damage reduction, flood risk management, scour evaluation, flood risk mapping, and maintenance of rivers and channels. Moreover, the methods available in the literature are generally not convenient for engineers due to the complexity of the equations and procedures of each method. On the other hand, the simple methods available in the literature do not contain a high level of accuracy. Hence, acquiring a simple accurate empirical method for computing backwater is necessary. In this study, a series of parametric studies is conducted to examine the influence of different factors on backwater. The results of the parametric studies along with multiple regression analysis are used in deriving a simple accurate mathematical model for computing backwater. The proposed method is firstly compared with the most commonly used method, energy method, for different skew angles and roughness cases. The comparison of the results of the proposed and energy methods indicates high correlations between the two methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is validated by comparing its results with experimental data for normal (at 0o), and skewed crossings at 30o and 45o. The overall absolute average percentage difference between the proposed method and experimental data is found to be 5.1%, while the overall root-mean-square error is found to be 0.008. Thus, the empirical method proposed by this study is considered highly accurate as well as simple in comparison with available methods in the literature. Additionally, the proposed method is applicable for rectangular and arch bridges, multiple opening bridges, and any type of crossings (normal and skewed) in compound channels."--Abstract.

Book Bridge Hydraulics

Download or read book Bridge Hydraulics written by Dr Les Hamill and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-12-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of bridges across rivers and streams is a major component of many civil engineering projects. The size of waterways must be kept reasonably small for reasons of economy and yet be large enough to allow floods to pass. Bridge Hydraulics is the first book to consider both arched and rectangular waterway openings in detail and to describe all of the main methods of analysis. With clear examples and relevant case studies, using both laboratory models and full- size bridges in the field, it is not only a thorough and accessible introduction to bridge hydraulics, but also a guide that will enable engineers to produce authoritative analyses and more effective designs.

Book Scour and Erosion

Download or read book Scour and Erosion written by Liang Cheng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th International Conference on Scour and Erosion (ICSE 2014) was organised by the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia under the guidance of the Technical Committee 213 for Scour and Erosion of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). This biennial conference draws together leading academics, scientists and engineers engaged in scour and erosion research to present and exchange their latest scientific findings. These proceedings, together with the six previous proceedings dating from 2002, present a rare collection of technical and scientific developments in scour and erosion research which have been established over the last 12 years. This book includes state-of-the-art papers in scour and erosion from ICSE 2014, covering the 6 themes of: internal erosion, sediment transport, advanced numerical modelling of scour and erosion, terrestrial scour and erosion, river/bridge scour and erosion, and marine scour and erosion. The proceedings include 5 keynote lectures from world leading researches cutting across the themes of scour and erosion, together with 87 peer-reviewed papers from 19 countries. This book is ideal for researchers and industry working at the forefront of scour and erosion, both with application to rivers and marine operations.
