This book furnishes a method of accounting investment efficiency that allows many factors in influencing optimal results, endeavoring to provide an answer to the question how investment means, and presenting the extent to which investment policies could become regulators of the balance of trade and payments within an economic alignment of socialist countries. The topics discussed include the problem of efficiency of investments; optimum programming of investments; adjustment of the general method to selected problems; efficiency of investments and international trade; and optimum production in a socialist economy. This book is intended to economists, but is also valuable to students aiming to gain knowledge on socialist economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficiency of Investment in a Socialist Economy sums up the work done by the Economic Research Division of the Planning Commission at the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Poland on the theory of studies on the efficiency of investment and its applications. This work was to a great extent connected with the preparation of the new General Instruction on Methods of Studies of the Economic Efficiency of Investment published by the Planning Commission in 1962. The book is organized into two parts. Part I on research methods covers methods for economically assessing of the efficiency of investments involving the construction of new plants; for the economic assessment of supplementary investments in already functioning plants; and for the analysis of smaller investments. Part II presents several examples including calculation of the efficiency of investment for a mine producing boiler coal; the efficiency of replacement of old thermal power stations; and the efficiency of production of natural gas and oil. This book may be of interest to persons dealing with studies on efficiency of investment by virtue of their profession.

Economic development and the system of the functioning of socialist economies have become the subject matter of an increasing number of works by economists throughout the world. Indeed, the experiences of socialist countries on different levels of social and economic development already offer a good deal of empirical material for theoretical analysis. An attempt at such an analysis has been made in this book, where the authors have concentrated on the investigation of a specific phenomenon in the motion of the economy — so-called investment cycles.

Download or read book The Rate of Growth and the Rate of Interest in the Socialist Economy written by K. Laski and published by Springer. This book was released on 1972 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I should like to dedicate this book to the memory of my teacher Michat Kalecki. It was my good luck to work and to be on friendly terms with him for many years including the time when his theory of growth of the socialist economy took shape. The experience of those years forms the background of the treatment of the problems discussed and of methods used in this book; this particularly concerns the relation between the theory of growth of the socialist economy and the theory of efficiency of investment, and the comparison of Kaleckls theory with the neoclassical theory of growth. I began to study the relationship between the rate of growth and the rate of interest in Warsaw in the years 1965-1968, following on the research I had done when preparing my previous book, Zarys teorii reprodukcji socjalistycznej (Introduction to the Theory of Socialist Reproduction), Ksiaika i Wiedza, Warsaw 1965. At that time Kaleckrs seminar on the theory of growth, in which I took part, was still in existence at the Central School of Planning and ~atistics in Warsaw. I wish to thank all the parti cipants of the seminar for their contribution and the valuable stimulation I have received from them.

Surely Peter MiMlyi knows where to place me in this taxonomy. For the most part I write my own irrelevant opinions, but there was one act of gross interference: my insistence on a point he had already quietly made, the greater stability of the production of consumer goods under Communism even of food, if we exclude bad harvests. The many Marxist and some other scholars who wrote about Dr. Mih

Download or read book Economic Thought and Economic Reform in the Soviet Union written by Pekka Sutela and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-07-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the history of centrally planned economies has been widely studied, the development of socialist thinking on the subject has remained largely uncharted. In this 1991 work, Pekka Sutela presents a detailed analysis of Soviet economic thought and theory. Dr Sutela traces the competing currents in the Marxist tradition of socialist economies from the Revolution to the present day. In particular he shows how the Gorbachev economic reform programme of 1987 rose from the work of Nobel Prize economist L. V. Kantorovich and his followers. However, this programme failed and the author explains in some detail why this happened. Since then, Soviet economists have tried to abandon their traditional theory of central planning and move along the path and long established contacts with leading Soviet economists, Pekka Sutela is able to show how Soviet economic thinking has moved from dogmatism through reformism to pragmatism.
