Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward II Colleague, R. D. Waller, from all responsibility for the long delay. The chief cause of it has been the vain hope of discovering some new fact concerning the dark period in the history Of Pembroke's company of actors. The edi tion as now issued endeavours to conform to the plan of the series, and the editors accept joint responsibility for the whole of it. They have profited greatly from the edition published by the American scholar, W. D. Briggs, in 1914. They are, too, very greatly indebted to the general editor, Mr. R. H. Case, and most of all for his patience in circum stances which must have tried him most sorely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marlowe's Edward II A Good deal of the material embodied in the Introduction to this volume was originally contained in a doctorate thesis submitted by the author to Harvard University in 1900. Much water, however, has run under the bridge since that year, and the Introduction in its present form is quite different from the thesis. Certain ideas that I then flattered myself were more or less new are now commonplace enough; the 'chronicle history' has been carefully studied in the last few years, and hardly any competent scholar who attentively examines the subject can fail to discover for himself the principal features of its development. I cannot then pretend to offer to the world any large fund of new information. Nevertheless, I venture to print this account of the growth of an interesting and important species of the drama in the hope that the reader will find it to be at least a useful collection of material. The emphasis, for purposes of clear presentation, has been laid upon the development of what is called 'form.' Quite obviously there is no fixed line to be drawn between form and content, and the distinction represents an abstraction from the facts for scientific convenience. D. 1309-1310 The time has come when something ought to be said of the manu scripts that we have been using for the compilation Of this volume and its two predecessors. The tale that has to be told cannot be very brief, and we must add that it cannot be satisfactory. Still in the course of it we may be able to disclose a state of affairs which will not be wholly devoid of interest in the eyes Of students of English history. J Turner of Lincoln's Inn, who is well known to all members of the Society by his volume of Forest Pleas. Of the learning, skill, and industry that he showed in searching the Plea Rolls for cases reported in the Year Books I cannot speak too highly or too gratefully. I have also to thank the Honorary Secretary for much help very kindly given, especially in the somewhat difficult work of settling the form that this book should take. Lastly, I think good to mention in remem brance of my love and duty almae matri Academiae Cantebrigiae (co. Lit. 109 b), that I have been allowed the inestimable privilege of. D. 1308-9 and 1309-10 The present volume being issued under the conditions stated in the Prefatory Note, want Of time and want of space forbid me from entering on that account Of the numerous manuscripts which I had hoped to prefix to the second instalment Of the Year Books Of Edward II. The delay is not altogether to be regretted, for what has to be said about this matter, and especially about duplicate and triplicate reports, will be the more intelligible if reference can already be made to three volumes Of examples which will be in the hands Of members Of the Society. To this may be added that every year's work upon the manuscripts may bring us a little nearer towards the solution Of some intricate problems. This having been premised, advantage will be taken of the pre sent opportunity for the making of a few miscellaneous remarks which should be made sooner or later. As regards the beginnings Of law reporting, we can now add a little to what was said last year. It will be remembered that those reports Of Edward I.'s day which Mr. Horwood edited in the Rolls Series take us back to the twentieth year Of the reign It will be remem bered, also, that he told1 Of the existence Of apparently Older, but not expressly dated, reports which he did not edit. Last year we Observed that Fitzherbert in his Abridgement refers to a good many cases Of the thirteenth year (1284 A closer examination Of his work enables us to speak more positively about the materials that were in his hands. He had reports Of a Cornish eyre Of a.r. 30, and a series Of expressly dated reports beginning with the Easter Term Of a.r. 81 and extending, though perhaps with some gaps, from that point until the end Of the reign, which occurred in A. R. 85. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward the Second: A Play Early Editions. A Quarto Edition of the play appeared in 1594; other Quartos followed in 1598, 1612, and 1622 respectively. Till twenty years ago the Quarto of 1598 was believed to be the earliest issue, and it has been made the basis of the text of Edward IL in all the standard editions of Marlowe's works. In 1876, however, a unique copy of the previously unknown Quarto of 1594 came to light in the royal library at Cassel; perhaps it had found its way thither through 'the English Comedians' who travelled in Germany at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries, playing in the chief towns and at the various courts. Of this first Quarto there is no reprint, nor, so far as I am aware, has any collation of its text with the later Quartos ever been published. But inasmuch as the variations between the three later Quartos are comparatively slight, we may fairly assume that the play was printed with considerable accuracy in the first instance, and that, therefore, the Quarto of 1594 differs but little from its successors. Book Edward II to Richard III Classic Reprint

Download or read book Edward II to Richard III Classic Reprint written by Alice Drayton Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward II to Richard III If this is the age of 'epochs' and 'periods' of history, it is also the age of historical monographs and biographies. The 'Heroes of the Nations' jostle the 'Story of the Nations' in friendly rivalry. The 'great man' theory is combined with the 'great movement' theory of historic development. The series of which this volume is a part aims at utilizing this tendency for the purpose of school teaching, and at stimulating children to independent reading and thought by presenting the history of England to them in a fresh and attractive form by means of typical lives of famous men and women drawn in large measure from original sources. Each volume contains a list of authorities and a consecutive summary of the whole period covered by the text, on which class teaching may be based. Illustrative maps, pictures, and genealogical tables are also given, and a full index, which it is hoped may be found useful in training young students to compare and rearrange facts for themselves, and to work out subjects from the incidental references scattered through the different biographies. Luckily for him, and for us, he had the run of the library there, which was better furnished than might have been expected. He found such good and suggestive material therein that he undertook to compile a history of Britain, an enterprise which very few knights in that illiterate age were competent to attempt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the Reign of Edward II in English History: Based Upon the Ford Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford in 1913 I have endeavoured to make my book more practical, by indicating, as I go along, what work is, to my knowledge, being done on the reign, and I am glad here to record that a not inconsiderable portion of that work is being under taken by my colleagues and pupils. If the first results of some of this had not been before me, I should have found my task much harder than it has been. I have mentioned the names of some such workers, as occasion has arisen in the course of my discussions. If I do not set down here their names, or the names of others who have helped me, I am none the less grateful for their assistance and advice. I hope that by making this reign, for the next few years, the centre of the seminar studies of my pupils here, we shall some of us have opportunities of testing its soundness. Is practically that of England for half a century, and embraces that of Scotland France, the Low Countries, and Spain in a more limited degree. The work is, therefore, more than a biography; it is a history of an important and dramatic epoch, as influenced and overshadowed by the extraordinary man who was the motive power of the activity of his age. It is in this spirit that the book was conceived and executed, and while shunning no labour to obtain original informa tion, I have striven to reproduce it in a style in keeping with the dramatic character of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis of Lancaster, or the Three Reigns of Edward II, Edward III, and Richard II, 1307-1399, Vol. 1 With these two volumes I offer the fifth and last instalment of my work. I hope that it may be found as useful, and meet with as friendly a reception as the previous issues. I claim at any rate to have laid before the public a fully-referenced general history of England, from the earliest times to the accession of the House of Tudor. Till now a work of that description could only be found in a foreign tongue; a general history, I say, ' because for internalaffairs the Constitutional History of Bishop Stubbs stands alone. My obligations to him will be found to be acknowledged at every step, with a frank ness that has not always been shown by those who have borrowed his ideas. My work, however, like his, may lay claim to the advantage of being the product of one single pen, on a consistent and uniform plan throughout, Without incongruity of theories, or overlapping of matter. The writer having had the whole story through his hands can take a comprehensive survey, and lead the reader back wards or forwards, as the case may be, for contrast or comparison, better than one whose attention has been concentrated on a single reign or epoch.
