Book Realizing the Power of Professional Learning

Download or read book Realizing the Power of Professional Learning written by Helen Timperley and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher professional development is often promoted as a panacea for improving schools but it rarely lives up to its promise. This book develops an approach to professional learning that has motivated teachers and resulted in impressive improvements in student learning, particularly for students who traditionally underachieve in school. As the underpinning research shows, the approach has proven successful in several countries with consistently positive outcomes. The book begins by identifying the shifts that need to happen for the power of professional learning to be realized in promoting student engagement, learning and well-being. Some shifts in thinking include: Moving from professional development to professional learning Putting student learning at the heart of professional learning Focusing on the knowledge and skills to be learned rather than the forms of delivery Focusing on the double-demand of being both immediately practical and developing underlying principles so that new problems can be solved in the future At the heart of the book is an inquiry and knowledge building cycle for teachers that is central to realizing the power of professional learning. The cycle is underpinned by research on how people learn and what it means to be a professional. Later chapters identify what leaders in schools and beyond can do to support teacher learning in ways that directly benefit students. Throughout the book there are case examples of real experiences of primary and secondary teachers and leaders across three countries (UK, Canada and New Zealand) that bring alive what it means to engage in professional learning in ways that excite teachers and benefit their students. This is essential reading for teachers who want to take control of their own professional learning in ways that make a difference to their students and school leaders with responsibility for promoting professional and student learning.

This introduction starts a cycle of repetition and review that students will experience as they work through the lessons. Horizons Math Kindergarten lays a foundation for order and exactness. The daily practice in the student books teaches the recognition and printing of the numerals 0 to 100. Simple addition and subtraction from 0 to 10 are taught. the addition-subtraction concept is extended through 99 with the aid of counters and the number line. Counting through 100 is presented by 1's, 10's, 5's, 2's, 3's, and 4's. Principles of place value, measurement, calendar use, telling time, graphing, comparisons, and money concepts are also introduced.

Book excerpt: With a nod to Richard Scarry, this inventive picture book surprises readers with every turn of the page! Hiss! Screech! Roar! It's a noisy day in Bumperville! But are the sounds what you think they are? That Honk! must surely be a goose. But turn the page and it's the taxi that a goose is driving! Using cleverly placed die-cuts, this inventive book hints at what is making the sound, but with each turn of the page, it's an eye-opening surprise and part of an unfolding story that is part guessing game and part giggle-inducing caper. Abi Cushman is the master of surprise and silliness in this absolutely delightful picture book.

Book excerpt: The Hidden Dangers in our schools have grown and intensified over the last few years; so much so that I was compelled to write a second edition to Hidden Dangers: Subtle Signs of Failing Schools. Our schools are complex places; each with its own unique climate, administration, faculty, students, parents and community members. Clearly, schools do not work in a vacuum; each is affected by the much larger society, government and economy. In this new edition we will be introduced to the interplay of these facets and how they can help and in some cases hinder our schools, our teachers, and our students from thriving. We also learn why it is more complicated now than ever, and the stakes are even higher than when Hidden Dangers was originally published back in 2008

Book Developing the Whole Student

Download or read book Developing the Whole Student written by Clifford Mayes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new way of categorizing curricula in the holistic educational traditional. This is an idea that goes back in the Western tradition at least as far as Plato, and Lao Tzu in the Eastern tradition. It is certainly present in Spinoza and Schopenhauer. It is called a “holarchy”. The idea of a holarchy gives rise to Integrative Curriculum Theory, which, with major modifications, draws on Ken Wilber’s in his evolutionary model of the development of consciousness at personal, cultural and ontological realms. Integrative Curriculum Theory will: 1) Prove a useful addition to the holistic repertoire of systematic and, above all, humane terminologies and “technologies” for making and evaluating specific curricula as well as for theorizing the curriculum at a time when “scientistic,” “technist” and profit-driven views of education have commandeered the podium, policy, and praxis and 2) address some areas of concern that with certain holistic models of education, and 3) address some problems in Wilber’s integral model of psychological, cultural, and spiritual evolution.
