Download or read book Foundations of Lifelong Education written by R. H. Dave and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Lifelong Education deals with the interdisciplinary foundations of lifelong education and examines a number of basic issues concerning lifelong education, such as why education should be treated as a lifelong process, or how the functions of lifelong education are related to historical and contemporary developments in society. The goals, contents, and processes of learning appropriate to the aspirations of lifelong education are also explored, as well as the extent to which lifelong education is feasible and practicable in different socio-economic and ideological conditions. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of methodological considerations in the present study, such as the nature of the foundations content; general steps that may be followed for constructing discipline-based foundations; and the ways of incorporating several elements of interdisciplinarity into the study. The reader is then introduced to the sociological and philosophical aspects of lifelong education, along with the historical background on the concept of lifelong education. In addition to sociology and philosophy, lifelong education in relation to anthropology, ecology, psychology, and economics is also analyzed. The book concludes by presenting illustrative analyses and syntheses of the ideas discussed in the preceding chapters based on selected disciplines. This monograph is intended for educators, social reformers, and educational policymakers.
Download or read book Education in the Industrialised Countries written by NA Poignant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965 Mr. Raymond Poignant published a comparative study, entitled "Education in the Common Market Countries", of the organi sation and state of development of education in the six countries of the Community and in three industrialised countries: the United States, the United Kingdom and the USSR. Mr. Poignant, at present Director of the International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO), compiled the material for this study when he was Chairman of a committee set up by the EEC Institute for University Studies. Since then it has become a reference work for all those who wish to under stand the similarities and the diversity of our educational systems; it has been translated into German and English. In the preface to the first edition we expressed the wish that this work of comparative analysis should be pursued and kept up-to-date. This wish is fulfilled in the work we are now introducing, and which was undertaken by Mr. Poignant pursuant to an agreement between the European Cultural Foundation and the International Institute for Educational Planning. It should be emphasised that this is not simply a revised edition of the previous work. The scope of the book has been enlarged, and Japan and Sweden are now included in the list of countries examined; more over the perspective is different.

Day (history, Simon Fraser U.) examines this reform in France since the late-nineteenth century, within the broader context of educational development and economic modernization. His analysis demonstrates ways in which government and industry have redefined skill requirements, reformed schools and programs, and established new forms of cooperation--work-study, continuing education, apprenticeship programs--to produce a well-educated and well-trained citizenry and workforce. c. Download or read book Interdisciplinarity and Higher Education written by Joseph J. Kockelmans and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clarification of the aims and problems of interdisciplinarity, as this book demonstrates, not only will help reveal the movement's probable impact on university teaching and research but also will shed light on the overall future of the university. This book therefore speaks to faculty members and administrators in general, as well as to teachers and students whose specialty is the study of higher education. A recurring theme is that every academic specialty can be justified for purposes of research, provided it does not lead to overspecialization in education. The proviso is a formidable one, challenging the intellect, the will, and the good faith of all concerned. Yet interdisciplinarity has a fundamental historical sanction: disciplinary domains are not immutable but rather are constantly evolving through fission and fusion. (Examples of fission are the division of medieval grammar and rhetoric into modern lingustic and literary studies, or of 19th-century biology into today's life sciences. Fusion is exemplified in a range of fields from astrophysics through biochemistry to psycholinguists and social psychology.) A general perspective on the continuing debate about interdisciplinary is presented in the first four chapters, followed by six chapters on specific problems and prospects. The introduction reviews well-founded as well as misdirected objections to interdisciplinarity, contrasting &"natural&" interactions as in geophysics (arising from intrinsic developments) with &"artificial&" ones as in general education courses (arising from curriculum design) &—but holding that the latter can be as legitimate as the former if responsive to genuine educational needs. Chapters 1 to 4 give the historical and philosophical background of interdisciplinarity from Plato's Academy to the Center for Educational Research and Innovation. Chapters 5 to 7 consider specific challenges in the respective domains of natural science, social science, and the humanities&—cautioning against incompetent borrowings of paradigms. Chapters 8 and 9 treat the methodological, institutional, and personal problems arising from boundary-crossing. Chapter 10 critically analyzes three cases of interdisciplinary innovation in the United States and gives summary descriptions of programs in a dozen countries.
