The aim of study was to investigate CSR communication and how it is perceived with a view to identifying how CSR can be communicated more effectively to consumers. The focus in this context was on relational CSR potentials and the effect of consumer-company identification as a main driving force behind relational CSR effects. In order to achieve this aim a comprehensive literature review was conducted to conceptualise the ideas on CSR, the CSR communication challenge as well the link between CSR information and consumer-company identification. Further, primary research was undertaken in terms of a consumer survey among German students in order to gain an understanding of consumer perceptions as well as to identify critical aspects of CSR communication. Results indicate that in spite of a general tendency of scepticism towards companies, consumers do accept and expect companies to communicate on their CSR activities. It also became apparent that interest in and support of the subject clearly exceed the awareness level, which suggests an unmet receptiveness regarding CSR information. In this context, women showed significantly more support and interest in the topic corroborating the established hypothesis of respective gender differences which was established within the theoretical discussion. Book excerpt: The globalization of the economy and the spread of information about MNEs' have spurred the social consciousness of consumers around the world. This process has in turn stimulated firms' interest to know then value consumers attach to socially responsible activities. Despite growing interest, it is to a large extent unknown how much consumers value firms' actions considered socially responsible. In this paper we contribute to the answer to this question. The results of four focus groups as well as interviews to 54 individuals suggest that the willingness to pay for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is positive. Based on these results, as well as those of recent studies, we argue that multi-attribute stated preferences methodology is best suited to quantify consumers' willingness to pay for specific activities related to CSR. We briefly present this methodology in the context of CSR.

But also other issues such as climate change and global warming, human rights situation and terrorism affect how companies conduct their strategies and operational practices today. Almost every large corporation in the western world makes some effort to communicate how it is committed to social issues that lie beyond its basic profit objectives – even in controversial industries such as the tobacco and petroleum industry. The industries claim to produce healthier food more fuel-efficient vehicles, conserve energy and other resources in their operations to make the world a better place. CSR often begins to be wishful thinking to hide the true face of a business. Doubtless what has come to be called responsibility of companies for ecological and social issues besides economic issues is now a sales and branding instrument for many companies. Hence, numerous other companies, also small and medium sized companies are currently asking themselves the questions: Shall we also invest in CSR initiatives? Why should we do that – just to do something? Is this still an instrument to gain a competitive advantage? Especially the last question implies the question, if consumers still believe in the basic idea of CSR initiatives, or with the overload of CSR initiatives, if they even show reactance and mistrust against such issues.

The focus of the research is consumer perception/participation in socially responsible processes in the context of active consumerism and capitalism. The leading question is what the consumer's role in capitalism looks like and how participation as a form of a holistic value creation could be. The gap shown in this research project is that consumers value and expect socially responsible behavior but stay merely passive. It is significant that consumers do not consider themselves as a determining influence regarding social responsibility. A tendency of more contribution to economic processes is visible but runs far behind its potential. Capitalism needs to be accepted as a tool and basis for the self-determined social responsibility of individuals.

Book excerpt: This study purposely aims to explore the relationship between the consumer perceptions and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the American University of Nigeria. This research project intends to investigate whether consumers understand the meaning of corporate social responsibility in the economic, social and environmental situations. The use of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiates to influence consumers and differentiate their perceptions has become quite common. This research is built on marketing literature that investigates whether consumers' perception on a product or service fits in or its being motivated. Research shows that ; "low-fit initiatives negatively impacts consumer beliefs, attitudes, and intentions no matter what the firm's motivation, and that high-fit initiative that are profit motivated have the same impact" (Hill & Becker-Olsen, 2005). This paper used an investigation to assess the perception of the consumer of the social responsibility practices of the findings, the consumers discovered that there are 3 dimensions of perceived corporate social responsibility: economic reasons, social reasons, and environmental reasons. The results suggest that consumers consider that there are only three aspects of CSR: economic, social and environmental.
