With six chapters on themes in LSE economics and 29 chapters on the lives and work of LSE economists, this volume shows how economics became established at the School, how it produced some of the world’s best-known economists, including Lionel Robbins and Bill Phillips, plus Nobel Prize winners, such as Friedrich Hayek, John Hicks and Christopher Pissarides, and how it remains a global force for the very best in teaching and research in economics. With original contributions from a stellar cast, this volume provides economists – especially those interested in macroeconomics and the history of economic thought – with the first in-depth analysis of LSE economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economica Mogambo is a compilation of some of the best articles on economics from Richard Daughty, aka Mogambo Guru, the writer of the Mogambo Guru Economic Newsletter. But this isn't your typical economics tome. Economica Mogambo takes you on a rollicking journey into Mogambo's underground bunker, to the local grocery store and through the streets of Tampa as an angry man in Florida expounds the Austrian Business Cycle theory to everyone he encounters employing his whimsical and unconventional methods with often hilarious results. The Desk Reference is an easy read with each essay only three or four pages in length but you'll find it difficult to put down. Anyone who finds economics dry and dull will find Daughty is a master at taking this subject and, by weaving in humorous anecdotes from his daily encounters, brings this topic to spirited life. Teens and pre-teens have found this book enjoyable, which is unprecedented in the field of economics, and all come away with a better knowledge of Austrian economics and current events when they thought they were only reading funny stories of a man named Mogambo Guru. Mogambo Guru always says to buy gold, silver and oil stocks. This book is gold for anyone seeking valuable and instructive economic education in a format that appeals to all ages and makes a wonderful addition to your home schooling resources.

Book Workers and Welfare

Download or read book Workers and Welfare written by Michelle Dion and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the revolutionary period of 1910-1920, Mexico developed a number of social protection programs to support workers in public and private sectors and to establish safeguards for the poor and the aged. These included pensions, healthcare, and worker's compensation. The new welfare programs were the product of a complex interrelationship of corporate, labor, and political actors. In this unique dynamic, cross-class coalitions maintained both an authoritarian regime and social protection system for some seventy years, despite the ebb and flow of political and economic tides. By focusing on organized labor, and its powerful role in effecting institutional change, Workers and Welfare chronicles the development and evolution of Mexican social insurance institutions in the twentieth century. Beginning with the antecedents of social insurance and the adoption of pension programs for central government workers in 1925, Dion's analysis shows how the labor movement, up until the 1990s, was instrumental in expanding welfare programs, but has since become largely ineffective. Despite stepped-up efforts, labor has seen the retrenchment of many benefits. Meanwhile, Dion cites the debt crisis, neoliberal reform, and resulting changes in the labor market as all contributing to a rise in poverty. Today, Mexican welfare programs emphasize poverty alleviation, in a marked shift away from social insurance benefits for the working class.
