Book Ecological Impacts of Mountain Yellow legged Frog Rana Muscosa and Rana Sierrae Declines on Sierra Nevada Lake Communities

Download or read book Ecological Impacts of Mountain Yellow legged Frog Rana Muscosa and Rana Sierrae Declines on Sierra Nevada Lake Communities written by Thomas Collier Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain yellow-legged frogs (Rana muscosa and Rana sierrae) of California's Sierra Nevada have been extirpated from over 90% of their historic range, initially by introduced trout predators, and more recently by the emergence of the lethal amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). Formerly widespread and abundant, mountain yellow-legged frogs are grazers and highly connected high level predators, living in low diversity, low productivity high elevation lakes. Here, I examine the extent to which frog extinctions impact Sierra Nevada lake communities. First, in a study that combined surveys of benthic macroinvertebrates in 22 lakes over 5 years with a reanalysis of benthic macroinvertebrate community data from over 150 lakes, I found no strong differences in benthic macroinvertebrate community diversity or composition between lakes with frogs vs. lakes without frogs. I also conducted experiments to evaluate the impact of tadpoles as grazers on benthic algae, and found that tadpoles do reduce algal biomass in artificial habitats, but that the effect can be small and may not outweigh the influence that abiotic variability has on algal biomass in lakes. Lastly, while I documented that large and periodic tadpole aggregations create biogeochemical hotspots of dissolved nitrogen, the phenomena may not be widespread enough to drive differences in diatom diversity in lakes with vs. without tadpoles. Within lakes, I found little indication that diatom community diversity and composition were responding to tadpole generated nitrogen hotspots as a fluctuation-dependent mechanism with potential to enhance diatom coexistence. While none of the ecological effects of mountain yellow-legged frogs and tadpoles that I observed suggests that their extinctions are having large impacts on Sierra Nevada lake communities, they should not be discounted as expendable, because there are many other ways in which these amphibians could be important in their communities.

Book Mountain Yellow legged Frog Rana Muscosa Conservation

Download or read book Mountain Yellow legged Frog Rana Muscosa Conservation written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa) has a disjunct distribution spread between the Sierra Nevada and southern California. The southern California population of mountain yellowlegged frog (MYLF) is recognized as a distinct population segment, and with less than 200 adults remaining in the wild, is protected under the federal endangered species act. I examined multiple facets of MYLF conservation across both wild and captive populations with the goal of improving current conservation efforts for the species. To understand the microhabitat needs of the MYLF I modeled the relationship between MYLF presence and 11 microhabitat variables on a per pool scale. Logistic regression models with Akaike's Information Criteria (AIC) were created for both frog and tadpole life stages. The frog model revealed that pool volume, pool leaf litter, bank leaf litter, and understory cover were important variables associated with frog presence. The tadpole model indicated that pool depth and understory cover were important and that pH was marginally important. This knowledge of the microhabitat needs of the MYLF can improve reintroduction efforts by allowing managers to make more informed decisions about where the MYLF should be reintroduced. To improve the reproductive output of a captive colony of MYLF with a history of low reproductive success, I measured the effect of an artificial hibernation period on multiple reproductive behaviors. Males subjected to advertisement calls of conspecific males demonstrated an increased phonotaxic response after a hibernation period (P = 0.01). However, females did not demonstrate a change in phonotaxic response after hibernation (P = 0.93). Examining the reproductive behaviors of breeding pairs I found that males who were hibernated had significantly higher frequencies of amplexus (P

Updated as of May 29, 2018 We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), designate critical habitat for the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae), the northern distinct population segment (DPS) of the mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa), and the Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). There is significant overlap in the critical habitat designations for these three species. The designated area, taking into account overlap in the critical habitat designations for these three species, is in total approximately 733,357 hectares (ha) (1,812,164 acres (ac)) in Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Fresno, Inyo, Lassen, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Tulare, and Tuolumne Counties, California. All critical habitat units and subunits are occupied by the respective species. The effect of this rule is to designate critical habitat under the Act for the conservation of the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog, the northern DPS of the mountain yellow-legged frog, and the Yosemite toad. Book Opportunities and Constraints of Sierra Nevada Meadow Restoration for the Mountain Yellow Legged Frog Species Complex

Download or read book Opportunities and Constraints of Sierra Nevada Meadow Restoration for the Mountain Yellow Legged Frog Species Complex written by Allie E Sennett and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibian populations worldwide are experiencing precipitous declines as a result of disease, introduced species, habitat loss, and climate change. The mountain yellow-legged frog (MYLF), once considered the most abundant vertebrate in the Sierra Nevada, has suffered dramatic population declines in recent decades, and implications of their decline include biodiversity impacts throughout this region. Specifically, the distribution of MYLF has severely contracted within their geographic range, with an obvious shift in overall abundance to sites toward the upper reaches of their elevation range. MYLF occupying high-elevation habitats (i.e., lakes and ponds) must overwinter for especially prolonged periods, which decreases their ability to forage and develop. Conversely, MYLF occupying habitats at lower elevations (i.e., wet meadows, streams, lakes, and ponds) exhibit higher growth rates, better body condition, and increased longevity. Yet, most scientific efforts for MYLF, such as non-native fish removal and research on disease dynamics, are being conducted at high-elevation habitats. The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate the potential opportunities and constraints of wet meadow restoration for MYLF. An evaluation of literature was conducted to answer questions revolving around (1) the biological and ecological requirements of MYLF, (2) primary stressors threatening the survival and distribution of MYLF, (3) MYLF utilization of wet meadows, and (4) suitability of wet meadow restoration outcomes for MYLF. A review of the literature suggests that meadow restoration may increase the availability and connectedness of habitat for MYLF by providing key physical and biological features required by this species. Meadows may also promote MYLF persistence with the chytrid fungus via warm expansive aquatic habitat that reduces zoospore density and production, disincentivizes transmission through aggregations and overwintering, and promotes overall MYLF fitness. These results indicate that increased species resiliency may be a general opportunity of meadow restoration. Major constraints or limitations of meadow restoration include predatory species introductions and limited peer-reviewed data on MYLF overwintering, co-occurrence with non-native fish, and use of wet meadows, despite a moderate amount of meadow occupancy data presented by public resource agencies. Given the results of this literature review, abbreviated recommendations include: restoration planning and design that incorporates knowledge on MYLF dispersal abilities, overwintering and basking needs, and MYLF-non-native fish dynamics; adaptive management of non-native predators following MYLF natural reestablishment or repatriation in restored meadows; and further studies on MYLF in wet meadow habitats, including those that focus on disease dynamics and overwintering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal diseases have contributed to death and disability in humans, triggered global wildlife extinctions and population declines, devastated agricultural crops, and altered forest ecosystem dynamics. Despite the extensive influence of fungi on health and economic well-being, the threats posed by emerging fungal pathogens to life on Earth are often underappreciated and poorly understood. On December 14 and 15, 2010, the IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop to explore the scientific and policy dimensions associated with the causes and consequences of emerging fungal diseases.
