Book Probability and Real Trees

Download or read book Probability and Real Trees written by Steven N. Evans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random trees and tree-valued stochastic processes are of particular importance in many fields. Using the framework of abstract "tree-like" metric spaces and ideas from metric geometry, Evans and his collaborators have recently pioneered an approach to studying the asymptotic behavior of such objects when the number of vertices goes to infinity. This publication surveys the relevant mathematical background and present some selected applications of the theory.

Book Concentration Inequalities and Model Selection

Download or read book Concentration Inequalities and Model Selection written by Pascal Massart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentration inequalities have been recognized as fundamental tools in several domains such as geometry of Banach spaces or random combinatorics. They also turn to be essential tools to develop a non asymptotic theory in statistics. This volume provides an overview of a non asymptotic theory for model selection. It also discusses some selected applications to variable selection, change points detection and statistical learning.

Book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics

Download or read book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics written by Simon Tavaré and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains lectures given at the 31st Probability Summer School in Saint-Flour (July 8-25, 2001). Simon Tavaré’s lectures serve as an introduction to the coalescent, and to inference for ancestral processes in population genetics. The stochastic computation methods described include rejection methods, importance sampling, Markov chain Monte Carlo, and approximate Bayesian methods. Ofer Zeitouni’s course on "Random Walks in Random Environment" presents systematically the tools that have been introduced to study the model. A fairly complete description of available results in dimension 1 is given. For higher dimension, the basic techniques and a discussion of some of the available results are provided. The contribution also includes an updated annotated bibliography and suggestions for further reading. Olivier Catoni's course appears separately.

Book Estimation and Testing Under Sparsity

Download or read book Estimation and Testing Under Sparsity written by Sara van de Geer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the Lasso method as its starting point, this book describes the main ingredients needed to study general loss functions and sparsity-inducing regularizers. It also provides a semi-parametric approach to establishing confidence intervals and tests. Sparsity-inducing methods have proven to be very useful in the analysis of high-dimensional data. Examples include the Lasso and group Lasso methods, and the least squares method with other norm-penalties, such as the nuclear norm. The illustrations provided include generalized linear models, density estimation, matrix completion and sparse principal components. Each chapter ends with a problem section. The book can be used as a textbook for a graduate or PhD course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to bring graduate students specializing in probability theory to current research topics at the interface of combinatorics and stochastic processes. There is particular focus on the theory of random combinatorial structures such as partitions, permutations, trees, forests, and mappings, and connections between the asymptotic theory of enumeration of such structures and the theory of stochastic processes like Brownian motion and Poisson processes.

Book Random Obstacle Problems

Download or read book Random Obstacle Problems written by Lorenzo Zambotti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying the fine properties of solutions to Stochastic (Partial) Differential Equations with reflection at a boundary, this book begins with a discussion of classical one-dimensional diffusions as the reflecting Brownian motion, devoting a chapter to Bessel processes, and moves on to function-valued solutions to SPDEs. Inspired by the classical stochastic calculus for diffusions, which is unfortunately still unavailable in infinite dimensions, it uses integration by parts formulae on convex sets of paths in order to describe the behaviour of the solutions at the boundary and the contact set between the solution and the obstacle. The text may serve as an introduction to space-time white noise, SPDEs and monotone gradient systems. Numerous open research problems in both classical and new topics are proposed.

Book Random Walks on Disordered Media and their Scaling Limits

Download or read book Random Walks on Disordered Media and their Scaling Limits written by Takashi Kumagai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these lecture notes, we will analyze the behavior of random walk on disordered media by means of both probabilistic and analytic methods, and will study the scaling limits. We will focus on the discrete potential theory and how the theory is effectively used in the analysis of disordered media. The first few chapters of the notes can be used as an introduction to discrete potential theory. Recently, there has been significant progress on the theory of random walk on disordered media such as fractals and random media. Random walk on a percolation cluster(‘the ant in the labyrinth’)is one of the typical examples. In 1986, H. Kesten showed the anomalous behavior of a random walk on a percolation cluster at critical probability. Partly motivated by this work, analysis and diffusion processes on fractals have been developed since the late eighties. As a result, various new methods have been produced to estimate heat kernels on disordered media. These developments are summarized in the notes.

Book Lectures on Probability Theory

Download or read book Lectures on Probability Theory written by Dominique Bakry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains work-outs of the notes of three 15-hour courses of lectures which constitute surveys on the concerned topics given at the St. Flour Probability Summer School in July 1992. The first course, by D. Bakry, is concerned with hypercontractivity properties and their use in semi-group theory, namely Sobolev and Log Sobolev inequa- lities, with estimations on the density of the semi-groups. The second one, by R.D. Gill, is about statistics on survi- val analysis; it includes product-integral theory, Kaplan- Meier estimators, and a look at cryptography and generation of randomness. The third one, by S.A. Molchanov, covers three aspects of random media: homogenization theory, loca- lization properties and intermittency. Each of these chap- ters provides an introduction to and survey of its subject.
