Download or read book Echoes and Empires written by Morgan Rhodes and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of the Falling Kingdoms series comes the first book in a brand-new duology about forbidden magic and dangerous secrets, for readers of Victoria Aveyard and Margaret Rogerson. Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: it’s rare, illegal, and always deadly. So when she’s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queen’s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. There’s nobody she can trust. Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though she’s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept. But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows to Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs she’s always taken for granted—beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself. In an empire built on lies, the truth may be her greatest weapon.
Download or read book Shadows and Echoes written by Stan Silverman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, I hovered in the past. Shadows and Echoes became that opportunity, by pushing my hippocampal button, to re-live past experiences and re-capture the people who influenced me the most. It was time for new insights; for finding answers to the over-arching question: Why I am what I am. Looking at ones life when in his mid-fifties I believe, is not unusual, especially when there exists a moderate degree of dissatisfaction. Though for most, the past is probably only a segment of ones life, an interval with fairly well-defined parameters. It is what was and then left there. This was not the case with me, until I began to write. At the age of fifty-five and in the grasp of the realization of more years behind than in front of me, I felt a need to stop and look at not just where I was but where I had been, where I came from. Encapsulating aspects of my life and personal influences, Shadows and Echoes originated as a strict narrative, a composite journaling if you will, for the benefit of my daughters. A change in the setting-fictionalized between psychiatrist and patient- added interaction and subtle nuances associated with the psychotherapeutic arena. That change gives the reader a focused relatable appeal. Personally, I found this freeing and to a great extent, stabilizing. The readers, I believe, will share similar ends, whether their look-back is joyful, sad, and/or wistful, or some combination. With religion as the fulcrum, earlier foundations and broader issues are stressed, i.e. childhood and family dynamics and the post-World War II confluence of identity, assimilation, and anti-Semitism. In my late adolescence, for a variety of reasons our family had to leave that safe, monolithic, supportive cocoon I had known and loved. It was this breach that seemed to change everything: my academic dismissal from college that eventually propelled me into a marriage prematurely; chronic career identity diffusion; a second failed marriage, and a series of relationships. Given his centrality in my life, much content was devoted to my father. He was my best friend and mentor, a role model in dealing with others; a non-religious man who could combine the religious and secular more effectively than anyone I have yet to meet; the person who men respected and women found charming; and the one who taught me how to grow old gracefully. In completing Shadows and Echoes, answers begot further questions with the cycle repeating itself a number of times. Some personal influences lost their veneer and became stick figures; many events were seen for what they were-fictionalized and ethereal. The composite gave me at once, a sorely lacking reconnection with my people and religion, along with a firm understanding of its teachings, history, as well as its own struggles.

Book excerpt: Be one of the first to read this sneak preview sample edition before the full length novel comes out! This genre-bending Africanfuturist horror novel blends The Handmaid’s Tale with Get Out in an adrenaline-packed, cyberpunk body-hopping ghost story exploring motherhood, memory, and a woman’s right to her own body. Nelah seems to have it all: fame, wealth, and a long-awaited daughter growing in a government lab. But, trapped in a loveless marriage to a policeman who uses a microchip to monitor her every move, Nelah’s perfect life is precarious. After a drug-fueled evening culminates in an eerie car accident, Nelah commits a desperate crime and buries the body, daring to hope that she can keep one last secret. The truth claws its way into Nelah’s life from the grave. As the ghost of her victim viciously hunts down the people Nelah holds dear, she is thrust into a race against the clock: in order to save any of her remaining loved ones, Nelah must unravel the political conspiracy her victim was on the verge of exposing—or risk losing everyone. Set in a cruel futuristic surveillance state where bodies are a government-issued resource, this harrowing story is a twisty, nail-biting commentary on power, monstrosity, and bodily autonomy. In sickeningly evocative prose, Womb City interrogates how patriarchy pits women against each other as unwitting collaborators in their own oppression. In this devastatingly timely debut novel, acclaimed short fiction writer Tlotlo Tsamaase brings a searing intelligence and Botswana’s cultural sensibility to the question: just how far must a woman go to bring the whole system crashing down?

Mexican Gothic meets Outlander in a debut novel in which a woman struggling with her mental health spends the winter with her cruel in-laws in their eerie, haunting manor that sweeps her back through time and into the arms of her fiancé's mysterious, alluring ancestor in the 19th century. Traveling to be with her fiancé’s terminally ill mother in her last days, Saoirse Read expected her introduction to the family's ancestral home would be bittersweet. But the stark thrust of Langdon Hall against the cliff and the hundred darkened windows in its battered walls are almost as forbidding as the woman who lies wasting inside. Her fiancé’s parents make no secret of their distaste for Saoirse, and their feelings have long since spread to their son. Or perhaps it is only the shadows of her mind suggesting she’s unwelcome, seizing on her fears while her beloved grieves? As Saoirse takes to wandering the estate’s winding, dreamlike gardens, overgrown and half-wild with neglect, she slips back through time to 1818. There she meets Theo Page, a man like her fiancé but softer, with all the charms of that gentler age, and who clearly harbors a fervent interest in her. As it becomes clear that Theo is her fiancé’s ancestor, and the tenuous peace of Langdon Hall crumbles around her, Saoirse finds she’s no longer sure which dreams and doubts belong to the present—and which might not be dreams at all . . .
