Noting how Hindu apologists from Rammohun Roy to Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan make an almost promiscuous use of the world's many philosophies and religions to define and defend Hinduism, Hatcher sets out to explore the ancient roots and contemporary significance of such eclectic borrowing. A discussion of the Vedic and classical roots of Hindu eclecticism affords Hatcher the opportunity to reflect upon the profound and widespread role of eclecticism in South Asian religion, while consideration of the work of Swami Vivekananda--as well as a variety of religious reformers from nineteenth-century Bengal--suggests the ongoing significance of the phenomenon in colonial and postcolonial contexts. By examining the development of Brahmo and Neo-Vedanta discourse, Hatcher is able both to problematize the notion of a monolithic concept of religious eclecticism and to reflect upon the various ways scholars might nevertheless attempt to make sense of a bewildering variety of eclectic philosophies. What emerges is not simply an attempt to refine our understanding of the role eclecticism has played in the modern Hindu context, but an extended reflection upon changing attitudes toward eclecticism in the West, from Diderot and Kant through postmodern critical theory. By investigating modern and postmodern perspectives on such issues as history, system, authenticity, and difference, Hatcher seeks to set in motion a dialectical approach to the study of eclectic world construction that balances the positivisitic confidence of modern scholarship with the playful exuberance of postmodern pastiche. Invoking the critical theories of Salman Rushdie, Theodor Adorno, and Richard Rorty, Hatcher advocates an approach to modern Hindu eclecticism that honors its creative poetics while retaining the critical distance necessary for judging its sometimes baleful fruits.

In general, Eclecticism describes a combination of a variety of influences, mainly of elements from different historical styles in architecture, painting, the graphic and decorative arts, as well as music in a single work. Eclecticism as a theatrical form was developed particularly by two directors: Max Reinhart, and Yevgeny Vakhtangov. 'Orghast', 'Conference of the birds' and 'Mahabharata' by Peter Brook are some examples of eclectic theatre in the West. Eclectic Theatre is a kind of new theory in postmodern theatre studies which can be manifested in connection with theatre activities of Iran. Based on our research, Eclectic Theatre found in Iran with 'Iranian Kings Resurrection Opera' (Rastakhiz Salatin Iran Opera). This Opera is an early example by Yahya Aranpour who reveals that Mirzadeh Eshghi merged western opera with Iranian theatre and brought out a new style of opera, and classified as Eclectic Theatre based on theatrical forms. In addition, 'Firdausi's memorial' which includes three stories from 'Shahnameh Firdausi' (the epic and legendary history of Iran by Firdausi). Moreover, some Iranian directors and playwrights have been derived from elements of Iranian traditional forms and merged them with western elements theatre. Therefore, they created new works of art which made based on their aesthetic principle. Subsequently, since the 1980s (AH 1360s) some Iranian dramatists have applied the 'form' and 'content' of Ta'ziyeh in their dramas. To name a few, for instance: Fath-Nameh Kalat in 1984, the cinematographic Mosaferan (Passengers) and the plays Parde-khane by Bahram Beyzaie in 1993 have taken from tragedy Ta'ziyeh. 'The Tragedy of Siavush' by Tahmoures in 2009 which dramatic structure involved with the elements of the 'Ta'ziyeh of Imam Hussain's Martyrdom'. Therewithal, Ghadamshad the Minstrel's Martyrdom-Playing in Tehran by in 2006 and Ashaghe (Story of Love) in 2007 by Mohamad Rahmanian are taken from subsequently tragedy and joyful Ta'ziyeh such as 'feminine Ta'ziyeh'. For the purpose of this study, the author will analyse some plays, based on Eclectic Theatre, as clear examples of Ta'ziyeh-influenced theatre as eclectic theatre in Iran. To this purpose, the author has made some classifications and criteria determined by watching plays, based on techniques and methods of Ta'ziyeh, and analysed those plays through eclecticism as an alternative form in postmodern theatre. This method has proved favourable for comparative studies on one part, while the Iranian theatrical forms have been more clear and researchable, on the other.

The evidence is examined in detail with reference to the philosophical and wider intellectual background of the period. Potamo's views are placed in the context of key debates at the forefront of late Hellenistic philosophical activity to which he contributed, such as the criterion of truth, the first principles in physics, the moral end and the interpretation of Aristotle's esoteric works. The emergence of eclecticism is thus treated in connection with the major shift in philosophical interests and methods that marked the passage from Hellenistic to Imperial philosophy.

Book excerpt: This monograph investigates the International, European and Commonwealth Caribbean approaches to human trafficking from an Analytical Eclectic perspective. It presents a compelling, empirically based argument that although there is currently a panoply of measures aimed at preventing human trafficking, prosecuting offenders and protecting trafficked victims in both Europe and the Commonwealth Caribbean, these measures have in practice been fraught with a number of challenges, whether of a normative, institutional or individual nature. The continued existence of these challenges strongly suggests that there exists a 'disconnect' between anti-trafficking law and practice which is not peculiar to small-island developing States since they also extend to developed States, including the United Kingdom. Although these challenges are not insurmountable, this monograph advances the argument that sustained social, economic, political and legal commitments are both necessary and desirable, and that without such commitments, only pyrrhic victories would be won in the fight to eradicate the scourge of the twenty-first century. Given the importance of the issue of human trafficking and its inescapable impact on victims, families, communities, nations, regions and the international community as a whole, this monograph will serve as an important resource for policy makers, scholars, students and practitioners actively working in this increasingly dynamic area of law.

While the number of approaches in New Testament interpretation has proliferated over the past few years, all the proposals still fall under one of the three traditional poles: sender (author) - text - receptor (reader). Classified according to this division each chapter has a twofold aim. Firstly, the perspective is situated within a wider framework of interpretation to illustrate the context out of which this approach emerges. Secondly, each article has selected a particular New Testament text to demonstrate this approach in practice. The authors of these chapters - the majority of which are South African scholars - were chosen because of their expertise in their specific fields.
