Book Eat Drink and Be Merry Luke 12 19 Food and Wine in Byzantium

Download or read book Eat Drink and Be Merry Luke 12 19 Food and Wine in Byzantium written by Kallirroe Linardou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of scholars to consider the rituals of eating together in the Byzantine world, the material culture of Byzantine food and wine consumption, and the transport and exchange of agricultural products. The contributors present food in nearly every conceivable guise, ranging from its rhetorical uses - food as a metaphor for redemption; food as politics; eating as a vice, abstinence as a virtue - to more practical applications such as the preparation of food, processing it, preserving it, and selling it abroad. We learn how the Byzantines viewed their diet, and how others - including, surprisingly, the Chinese - viewed it. Some consider the protocols of eating in a monastery, of dining in the palace, or of roughing it on a picnic or military campaign; others examine what serving dishes and utensils were in use in the dining room and how this changed over time. Throughout, the terminology of eating - and especially some of the more problematic terms - is explored. The chapters expand on papers presented at the 37th Annual Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, held at the University of Birmingham under the auspices of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies, in honour of Professor A.A.M. Bryer, a fitting tribute for the man who first told the world about Byzantine agricultural implements.

Book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words

Download or read book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a composite picture of the richness of proverbs as significant expressions of folk wisdom as is manifest from their appearance in art, culture, folklore, history, literature, and the mass media. The book draws attention to the fact that proverbs as metaphorical signs continue to play an important role in oral and written communication. Proverbs as so-called monumenta humana are omnipresent in all facets of life, and while they are neither sacrosanct nor saccharine, they usually offer much common sense or wisdom based on recurrent experiences and observations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Making a Way Out of No Way

Download or read book Making a Way Out of No Way written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In barely forty years of life Martin Luther King (1929-1968) distinguished himself as one of the greatest social reformers of modern times: civil rights leader, defender of nonviolence in the struggle of desegregation, champion of the poor, anti-war proponent, and broad-minded visionary of an interrelated world of free people. His many verbal and written communications in the form of sermons, speeches, interviews, letters, essays, and several books are replete with Bible proverbs as «Love your enemies», «He who lives by the sword shall perish by the sword», and «Man does not live by bread alone» as well as folk proverbs as «Time and tide wait for no man», «Last hired, first fired», «No gain without pain», and «Making a way out of no way». He also delighted in citing quotations that have become proverbs, to wit «No man is an island», «All men are created equal», and «No lie can live forever». King recycles these bits of traditional wisdom in various contexts, varying his proverbial messages as he addresses the multifaceted issues of civil rights. His rhetorical prowess is thus informed to a considerable degree by his effective use of his repertoire of proverbs which he frequently uses as leitmotifs or amasses into set pieces of fixed phrases to be employed repeatedly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we near the end of our earthly sojourns, often we look back on our journeys and reflect on the many peaks and valleys along the way. Moses led a stubborn people for forty years to bring them from Egypt to the Promised Land, but his mistake in not following God’s command prevented him from entering. Yet he was given permission to climb Mount Nebo and see the Promised Land before he died. In Approaching Nebo’s Peak, author Eulie R. Brannan reflects on his ninety year journey as he, too, nears his own Nebo’s peak, imagining Moses’s thoughts and intertwining them with his own. Dr. Brannan has spent a lifetime studying the scriptures, which has enabled him to draw on Bible characters and principles and share his insights with you; by noting how the lower peaks and valleys can help us make our last great climb to the top, he hopes that his spiritual autobiography will help you in your climb. Like Moses, you may have spent a lifetime seeking the Promised Land. And as you climb to Nebo’s peak and see what the Lord has given, you will finally experience the excitement of a permanent homecoming.

Book What If the Bible Had Never Been Written

Download or read book What If the Bible Had Never Been Written written by D. James Kennedy and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But the Bible, more than any other book, is also the most maligned on the market. Many of the cities of our culture dismiss the Word of God. In What If the Bible Had Never Been Written?, D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe show that this collection of books was indeed the inspiration for almost all of the great explorers, scientists, writers, artists, politicians, and educators the world has ever known. That such a book, which has influenced so many and stood the test of time for so long, is dismissed as folklore or myth, just goes to show what extremes nonbelievers will go to rationalize their behavior. From the Ten Commandments, which many of our laws and government are based upon, to the Golden Rule, a verse taken straight out of the New Testament, to many of today's most common phrases and expressions...there is no doubt as to the influence the Bible has on everyone, in some degree, every day. What If the Bible Had Never Been Written? provides a well-documented and in-depth look at the impact the Book of Books has had on humanity, pointing to specific areas in today's society that would not be as they are now, if it were not for the Bible.
