Book Earth s Enemy a Satire on the Present from the Future

Download or read book Earth s Enemy a Satire on the Present from the Future written by Barry C. Kent and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earths Enemy is a fiction about future changes in the way humans live. In this incredible culture humans have evolved a new technology, society and ideology. The changes were gradual and keyed to both a major decrease in population and a seemingly impossible alteration of the economy. The setting is a century and a half from now and takes place largely in the area formerly called the United States. Due to an unfortunate loss of most books and electronic storage devices much of history no longer exists. Jack, a psychologist, has volunteered to explain the new culture to a number of humans from the turn of the 20th century who had undergone cryonics and are now being revived. During these sessions Jack discovers many strange things about the past which the people of his time have forgotten. Likewise, few of the cryons are able to cope with the new culture to which Jack is introducing them. In one way or another each of them is disappointed by the paucity of technological inventions. Most are outraged or dismayed by the disappearance of so many things which they thought were an essential part of their way of life. No more newspapers, competitive sports, nursing homes, new music, fossil fuel, air travel, space programs, banks, courtrooms, prisons, money, multitudes of religions and only one language are generally unacceptable or incomprehensible to the cryons. All of them seem pleased to learn that there is no more war, crime, poverty, bigotry, overpopulation, or environmental pollution. However, when they discover the ridiculous changes in economy which have made the new way of life possible most of the cryons are willing to fight for a return to their old way of life.

Book excerpt: _______________________ 'A comedy with teeth ... razor sharp and darkly funny' (TIMES) 'Boyle's prose is so good and his imagination so fertile that after a while you just sit back and are swept along' (TELEGRAPH) 'Surreal, daring and compassionate. Easily one of the best books of the year' (MAIL) 'Superb ... if Boyle was from this side of the pond, this is the book they'd all have to beat for the Booker Prize' (SUNDAY TIMES) It's 2025, and 75-year-old environmentalist and retired eco-terrorist Ty Tierwater is eking out a bleak living managing a pop star's private zoo. It is the last one in southern California, and vital for the cloning of its captive species. Once, Ty was so serious about environmental causes that as a radical activist committed to Earth Forever! he endangered the lives of both his daughter, Sierra, and his wife, Andrea. Now, when he's just trying to survive in a world cursed by storm and drought, Andrea re-enters his life. Frightening, funny, surreal and gripping, T.C. Boyle's story is both a modern morality tale, and a provocative vision of the future.

Book excerpt: A collection of 10 “striking” short stories on the dangers of climate change—featuring works by Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Kim Stanley Robinson, and an introduction by Bill McKibben (The Boston Globe). The size and severity of the global climate crisis is such that even the most committed environmentalists are liable to live in a state of denial. The award-winning writers collected here have made it their task to shake off this nagging disbelief, bringing the incomprehensible within our grasp and shaping an emotional response to the deterioration of our global habitat. From T. C. Boyle’s account of early eco-activists, to Nathaniel Rich’s vision of a near future where oil sells for $800 a barrel—these ten provocative, occasionally chilling, sometimes satirical stories bring a human reality to disasters of inhuman proportions. Royalties from I’m With the Bears will go to 350.org, an international grassroots movement working to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ketchvar III's mission is simple: travel to Planet Earth, inhabit the body of an average teenager, and determine if the human race should be annihilated. And so Ketchvar—who, to human eyes, looks just like a common snail—crawls into the brain of one Tom Filber and attempts to do his analysis. At first glance, Tom appears to be the perfect specimen—fourteen years old, good health, above average intelligence. But it soon becomes apparent that Tom Filber may be a little too average—gawky, awkward, and utterly abhorred by his peers. An alien within an alien's skin, Ketchvar quickly finds himself wrapped up in the daily drama of teenage life—infuriating family members, raging bullies, and undeniably beautiful next-door neighbors. And the more entangled Ketchvar becomes, the harder it is to answer the question he was sent to Earth to resolve: Should the Sandovinians release the Gagnerian Death Ray and erase the human species for good? Or is it possible that Homo sapiens really are worth saving? Wickedly wry and hysterically skewed, David Klass's take on teen life on our fabulously flawed Planet Earth is an engrossing look at true friends, truer enemies, and awkward alien first kisses. Stuck on Earth is a 2011 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.
