Book excerpt: Dorchester County's special blend of past and present, treasured by locals, appeals also to visitors from all walks of life. Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Jimmy Carter, performers Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Ella Fitzgerald, and Pulitzer Prize-winning authors James Michener and Richard Ben Cramer all enjoyed sojourning here. Dorchester County is surrounded almost entirely by scenic waters: the Choptank and Nanticoke Rivers, Hunting Creek, and the Chesapeake Bay. A cruise along these waterways offers long stretches of pristine marsh and uplands that transport visitors to earlier days, when Native Americans traveled these same waters in log canoes. Occasional glimpses of historic homes evoke colonial times. Within these watery boundaries, this largest of Maryland's counties encompasses landscapes and activities to gladden any heart. Railroad and history buffs, hunters, birdwatchers, epicures, and visitors from more hectic locales all find their heart's content in this land of pleasant living.

Book Side lights on Maryland History

Download or read book Side lights on Maryland History written by Hester Dorsey Richardson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark of Maryland genealogy consists of a large number of meticulously researched articles which were designed, in part, to counter the "scurrilous" claim that Maryland was settled largely by convicts and indentured servants. It is as a compilation of family histories and source records that the work shines, however, for it is the embodiment of the very best in genealogical orthodoxy. Volume I contains seventy-five chapters, or articles, on a variety of subjects, among them articles on the passengers on the Ark and the Dove, the first Maryland settlers, muster rolls of colonial militia, original members of the Society of the Cincinnati in Maryland, the names of 1,000 early settlers in Maryland with their land surveys, Scotch exiles in Maryland, etc. Volume II consists entirely of genealogical sketches which carry over 100 Maryland families back to the immigrant ancestor. Profusely illustrated with coats of arms, photographs, and rare portraits!

Book Pioneers of Old Monocacy

Download or read book Pioneers of Old Monocacy written by Grace L. Tracey and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1987 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a definitive account of the land and the people of Old Monocacy in early Frederick County, Maryland. The outgrowth of a project begun by Grace L. Tracey and completed by John P. Dern, it presents a detailed account of landholdings in that part of western Maryland that eventually became Frederick County. At the same time it provides a history of the inhabitants of the area, from the early traders and explorers to the farsighted investors and speculators, from the original Quaker settlers to the Germans of central Frederick County. In essence, the book has a dual focus. First it attempts to locate and describe the land of the early settlers. This is done by means of a superb series of plat maps, drawn to scale from original surveys and based both on certificates of survey and patents. These show, in precise configurations, the exact locations of the various grants and lots, the names of owners and occupiers, the dates of surveys and patents, and the names of contiguous land owners. Second, it identifies the early settlers and inhabitants of the area, carefully following them through deeds, wills, and inventories, judgment records, and rent rolls. Finally, in meticulously compiled appendices it provides a chronological list of surveys between 1721 and 1743; an alphabetical list of surveys, giving dates, page reference--text and maps--and patent references; a list of taxables for 1733-34; and a list of the early German settlers of Frederick County, showing their religion, their location, dates of arrival, and their earliest records in the county. Winner of the 1988 Donald Lines Jacobus Award

Book Roger Hooper and the Sheriff Hoopers Island s First One Hundred Years

Download or read book Roger Hooper and the Sheriff Hoopers Island s First One Hundred Years written by Jacqueline Simmons Hedberg and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the first 100 years of the settlement of Hoopers Island in Dorchester County on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Based on an event from January 1753, reported in the records of the Maryland Assembly, in which the sheriff charges tobacco planter Roger Hooper with unpaid quit-rents and threatens to seize two of Hooper's slaves. On a small scale, ROGER HOOPER AND THE SHERIFF is the story of one colonial tidewater family who settled on an island on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay. On a larger canvas, through the story of this family, one can learn about the development of colonial Maryland--the difficulties the pioneers experienced, their relationship to the Indians, the importance of tobacco, the change to slave labor, the deterioriation of religious toleration, the role of women, and, finally, the economic changes that eventually isolated one side of the Bay from the other.
