Download or read book The Early Narratives of Genesis Classic Reprint written by James Orr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis The subject A nave Men asked to speak on is a large one, and is complicated with many questions - critical, archaeological, scientific, exegetical. You will therefore bear with me if many points have to be touched upon in a cursory manner, and if some things have to be omitted altogether on which you would probably wish to hear me Speak. The subject is the Early Narratives in the Book of Genesis. By the Early Narratives are to be understood the first eleven chapters of the Book - those which pre cede the times of Abraham. These chapters present peculiarities of their own, and I confine attention to them, although the critical treatment applied to them is not confined to these chapters, but extends through out the whole Book of Genesis, the Book of Exodus, and the later history with much the same result in reducing them to legend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis: A Brief Introduction to the Study of Genesis I-XI The doubts and questionings to which the Early Narratives of Genesis have frequently given rise are well known to those who have any acquaintance with the religious difficulties of our own time. They, indeed, have been fortunate in their experience who have not known an instance in which antagonism or indifference to religion has been fostered by the rigid refusal, on the part of well-meaning Christian parents and teachers, to admit the possibility of an alternative to the traditional interpretation of this portion of Scripture. Groundless as the supposition was, that a Christian when he reads the Book of Genesis must either renounce his confidence in the achievements of scientific research or abandon his faith in Scripture, it was, at one time, as widely prevalent as it was mischievous and false. Book Genesis History Fiction or Neither

Download or read book Genesis History Fiction or Neither written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of the Genesis narrative has sparked much debate among Christians. This book introduces three predominant interpretive genres and their implications for biblical understanding. Each contributor identifies their position on the genre or genres of Genesis, chapters 1-11, addresses why their interpretation is respectful of and appropriate to the text, and contributes examples of its application to a variety of passages. The positions include: Theological History(Genesis can be taken seriously as both history and theology) – defended by James K. Hoffmeier. Proto-History (the early Genesis narratives consist of a variety of literary genres; which, nonetheless, do not obscure the book's theological teaching) – defended by Gordon J. Wenham. Ancient Historiography (an understanding of Genesis that seeks to reconcile the limitations of its human authors with the nature of it being the Word of God) defended by Kenton L. Sparks. General editor and Old Testament scholar Charles Halton explains the importance of genre and provides historical insight in the introduction and helpful summaries of each position in the conclusion. In the reader-friendly Counterpoints format, this book helps readers to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of each view and draw informed conclusions in this much-debated topic.
