To encourage growth, Lambert Molinelli & Company, a real estate firm, published a "complete history" of the area, called Eureka and Its Resources. Written in 1879, this promotional piece claimed Eureka to be the second most important town in Nevada and touted its many virtues: the most prosperous mines in the state; telegraph, stagecoach, and railroad service; handsome new buildings; and plenty of water. To further embellish the town's image and lend some sophistication, local purveyors and businessmen advertised their wares at the end of the book. Eureka and Its Resources is a typical example of the many promotional pieces written in the early days of the West. This reprinted edition preserves all of the original text, advertisements, and illustrations.

The county of Eureka occupies that portion of the State of Nevada lying north and east of its geographical center. It lies between the parallels of 39 10' and and between the meridians of 115 45' and 116 35' west of Greenwich. It is bounded as follows On the north by Elko county, on the east by Elko and White Pine counties, on the south by Nye county, and on the west by Lander county. The Humboldt river, with a general westerly course, ows through the northern portion of the county. Maggie creek empties into the Humboldt from the. North, and Pine creek from the south. Fish creek rises in the southwestern portion of the county, and ows in an easterly direction into White Pine county, where it Sinks. There are also several minor streams, fed by the mountain springs, and sinking in a few miles from their source. The Sulphur range of mountains lies partly within the county and along its western boundary, extending from the Humboldt river on the north to the Nye county line on the south. On the east of the county lies the Diamond range, which, trending westerly at its southern extremity, crosses the southeastern portion of the county. From these ranges numerous spurs extend into the county, the principal of which is Prospect mountain, trending northerly from the southwestern extremity of the Diamond range. On August 18, 1879, in a canyon near Fish Creek, outside Eureka, Nevada, five Italian charcoal burners were slain and six more were wounded, while fourteen were taken prisoner by a sheriff’s posse. Through meticulous research on the event, relying on such primary sources as newspaper articles, author Silvio Manno provides the only comprehensive account of Eureka’s charcoal crisis and what came to be known as the Fish Creek Massacre. This is a well-documented narrative history of an important instance of class and ethnic conflict in the West. He contributes in a text rich with memories tramping through rural Nevada as a child, then as a journalist seeking news and gossip, then later as an academic historian and a parent trying to share the wonders of the high desert with his family. Nobody is more qualified to write about the cultural nuances of rural Nevada than Hulse, who retired after 35 years as a professor of history at University of Nevada, Reno. Robert Laxalt wrote an article in National Geographic in 1974 entitled “The Other Nevada” in which he referred to “the Nevada that has been eclipsed by the tinsel trimmings of Las Vegas, the round-the-clock casinos, the ski slopes of the Sierra. It is a Nevada that few tourists see.” With this book Hulse reflects on Laxalt’s insights and shows changes—often slow-moving and incremental—that have occurred since then. Much of the terrain of rural Nevada has not changed at all, while others have adapted to technological revolutions of recent times. Hulse states that there is no single “other” Nevada, but several subcultures with distinct features. He offers a tour of sorts to what John Muir called the “bewildering abundance” of the Nevada landscape.
