Book Dynamic Stability of Cylindrical Shells Under Static and Periodic Axial and Radial Loads

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Cylindrical Shells Under Static and Periodic Axial and Radial Loads written by JOHN C. YAO and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several cases of the dynamic stability problem for cylinders are solved explicitly. Combinations of the static and periodic radial and axial loads are considered. The regions of instability and stability are established directly in terms of the geometry of the cylinder, load intensity, and frequency. All the numerical results obtained here tend to indicate that a cylinder designed according to the static buckling load can withstand an additional periodic load. It was found that the ratio of additional periodic load to the static buckling load was greater for a thin cylinder than for a thicker cylinder of the same radius. It was also found that the resistance of a cylinder to loads in excess of the static buckling load increases with increasing frequency of loading. (Author).

Book Dynamic Stability of Cylindrical Shells Under Step Loading

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Cylindrical Shells Under Step Loading written by Yukio Stephen Tamura and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been made to determine the dynamic stability of an imperfect circular cylindrical shell subject to a step loading in the axial direction. In the analysis, the radial displacement of the shell is approximated by a finite degree of freedom system. To assure that the created model is proper, its static buckling behavior was studied. It was found that the model gives the proper imperfection sensitivity behavior. (Modified author abstract).

Book Dynamic Response of Composite Cylindrical Shells Under External Impulsive Loads

Download or read book Dynamic Response of Composite Cylindrical Shells Under External Impulsive Loads written by Sunil George Pothula and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dynamic pulse buckling, vibration and failure of laminated, composite cylindrical shells subjected to blast loading were studied. The dynamic response of the shells with orthotropic, symmetric, anti-symmetric and quasi-isotropic layups subjected to both uniform and asymmetric pressure pulse loading (side-on explosion) were examined by use of Fourier series and Lagrange's equation of motion. The solutions for the radial shell deformations were represented by Mathieu differential equations. Dynamic stability of the shells was determined from a Mathieu stability diagram. It was found that the stability of the shells were affected by lay-up, aspect ratio as well as impulse distribution. The stable vibration response of the orthotropic cylindrical shell with side-on explosion compared well with finite element solutions using an implicit dynamic analysis in ABAQUS Standard. First-ply failure of the orthotropic composite cylindrical shell was predicted using a modified Hashin-Rotem failure criterion. It was observed that the thinner shell were more likely to fail by dynamic instability, whereas the thicker shells were more likely to fail by first-ply failure."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: There are numerous engineering applications for high-speed rotating structures which rotate about their symmetric axes. For example, free-flight sub-munition projectiles rotate at high speeds in order to achieve an aerodynamically-stable flight. This is the first book of its kind to provide a comprehensive and systematic description of rotating shell dynamics. It not only provides the basic derivation of the dynamic governing equations for rotating shells, but documents benchmark results for free vibration, critical speed and parametric resonance. It is written in a simple and clear manner making it accessible both the expert and graduate student. The first monograph to provide a detailed description of rotating shell dynamics Dynamic problems such as free vibration and dynamic stability are examined in detail, for basic shells of revolutions

Book Dynamic Stability of Suddenly Loaded Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Suddenly Loaded Structures written by George J. Simitses and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic instability or dynamic buckling as applied to structures is a term that has been used to describe many classes of problems and many physical phenomena. It is not surprising, then, that the term finds several uses and interpretations among structural mechanicians. Problems of parametric resonance, follower-force, whirling of rotating shafts, fluid-solid interaction, general response of structures to dynamic loads, and several others are all classified under dynamic instability. Many analytical and experimental studies of such problems can be found in several books as either specialized topics or the main theme. Two such classes, parametric resonance and stability of nonconservative systems under static loads (follower-force problems), form the main theme of two books by V. V. Bolotin, which have been translated from Russian. Moreover, treatment of aero elastic instabilities can be found in several textbooks. Finally, analytical and experimental studies of structural elements and systems subjected to intense loads (of very short duration) are the focus of the recent monograph by Lindberg and Florence. The first chapter attempts to classify the various "dynamic instability" phenomena by taking into consideration the nature of the cause, the character of the response, and the history of the problem. Moreover, the various concepts and methodologies as developed and used by the various investigators for estimating critical conditions for suddenly loaded elastic systems are fully described. Chapter 2 demonstrates the concepts and criteria for dynamic stability through simple mechanical models with one and two degrees of freedom.

Book Dynamic Stability and Non linear Oscillations of Cylindrical Shells plain Strain Subjected to Impulsive Pressure

Download or read book Dynamic Stability and Non linear Oscillations of Cylindrical Shells plain Strain Subjected to Impulsive Pressure written by Ivor Keen McIvor and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for large deformation of a thin elastic cyl ndrical shell are derived and simplified to a form second order theory which is adequate for investigating the dynamic stability of the shell. A review of linear vibrations is presented. The response of a cylindrical shell to a uniform impulsive pressure is investigated. It is found that the circular mode of vibration, which is the basic response of the shell, may be unstable, the shell going over into bending modes of vibration. A criterion is established for predicting the bending modes excited. It is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to what is known as autoparametric excitation in non-linear oscillations. Uniform impulsive pressure of sufficient magnitude to cause inward plastic flow is considered. The analysis is carried out for a stress-strain relation which includes purely viscous, viscoplastic, and linear strain hardening materials as special cases. It is shown that a series of wrinkles develop around the circumference as the shell flows inward. The wrinkling arises from magnification of the irregularities in the initial radial velocity due to the compressive membrane force in the shell. (Author).

Book Dynamic Stability of Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Structures written by George Herrmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Stability of Structures covers the proceedings of an International Conference on Dynamic Stability of Structures, held in Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois on October 18-20, 1965, jointly sponsored by the Air Force of Scientific Research and Northwestern University. The conference aims to delineate the various categories of dynamic stability phenomena. This book is organized into six sections encompassing 20 chapters that tackle general topics such as mathematical methods of analysis, physical phenomena, design applications in engineering, and reports of field research. The first two sections deal with the fundamentals, principles, and concept of dynamic stability, as well as an introduction to the use of computing machines as an aid in studying the motions of complicated dynamical systems. The succeeding two sections highlight the statistical aspects in the structural stability theory and certain problems of structural dynamic. These sections also look into the dynamic buckling of elastic structures and the buckling of long slender ships due to wave-induced whipping. The last two sections explore the stability and vibration problems of mechanical systems under harmonic excitation and the dynamic buckling under step loading. These sections also include discussions on the nonlinear dynamic response of shell-type structures and of a column under random loading, as well as Italian research in the field. Structural and mechanical engineers will find this book invaluable.
