Book Dynamic Consolidation of Metal Powders

Download or read book Dynamic Consolidation of Metal Powders written by William H. Gourdin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied the shock wave consolidation of copper, 4330 steel and aluminum+6% silicon powders. We measured the Hugoniots of the unsintered powders using piezoresistive pressure sensors as well as impedance matching techniques and found that they can be well described by available models for pore collapse. An elementary model for the surface heating was developed based on the flux of energy at the interfaces between powder particles during compaction. This model was found to agree quantitatively with observations of localized microstructural modifications in recovered specimens. We found that most of the energy of the compaction shock is deposited at the particle interfaces and that powder particle morphology and specific surface area are important variables. Localized thermal modifications can be either solid state transformations or surface melting and rapid cooling can produce metastable structures. Knowledge of the shock history is essential to the interpretation and control of the consolidated microstructure. We have produced and tested consolidated aluminum+6% silicon that has tensile properties comparable to those of wrought material.

Book Dynamic Compaction of Metal and Ceramic Powders

Download or read book Dynamic Compaction of Metal and Ceramic Powders written by Vonne D. Linse and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of the art and the technological potential for the dynamic consolidation of metal and ceramic powders were assessed. Fundamental consideration of dynamic consolidation, consolidation phenomena during dynamic compaction, dynamic compaction and conditioning of metal and ceramic powders, characterization of dynamically consolidated metal and ceramic powders, computer codes applicable to dynamic compaction, practical and potential applications, problem areas, and the current position of the United States in dynamic compaction were examined. Based on its conclusions, the committee recommend that a systematic study of the dynamic compaction process should be conducted; existing techniques should be improved and new ones developed for monitoring of dynamic events as close to the microscale as possible for temperatures, shock velocities, pressures and particle motion data from systematic experiments should be utilized to form data information for modeling codes; coordination among those investigating dynamic compaction should be maintained; a sufficiently funded, sustained, coordinated, and concentrated research and development effort should be initiated to strengthen the United States position in the dynamic compaction field. Book Dynamically Consolidated Composites Manufacture and Properties

Download or read book Dynamically Consolidated Composites Manufacture and Properties written by T.Z. Blazynski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New composite materials and semi-fabricates, as disparate in their nature as solid multilaminates and powder compacts, have been steadily increasing in importance. Their application to a variety of industrial situations is being made easier by the considerable development of conventional manufacturing techniques which fulfil many of the requirements imposed on such materials. At the same time, however, the degree of their exploitation can be limited by, either the inadequate final product properties, or simply - as in the case of particulate matter - by the inability of these techniques to produce significant quantities of the composite. For these reasons, combined with the ever increasing demand for highly sophisticated composites, attention has been focused on the dynamic manufacturing methods. Not only do they extend the range of the available routes, but they also offer the possibility of achieving chemical and/or structural syntheses of new materials from either the elemental or complex constituents. What is more, these techniques often tend to ensure integral bonding of the elements of the structure and they thus enhance the mechanical properties of the composite.

Book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials

Download or read book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials written by Vitali Nesterenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the behavior of essentially nonlinear heterogeneous materials in processes occurring under intense dynamic loading, where microstructural effects play the main role. This book is not an introduction to the dynamic behavior of materials, and general information available in other books is not included. The material herein is presented in a form I hope will make it useful not only for researchers working in related areas, but also for graduate students. I used it successfully to teach a course on the dynamic behavior of materials at the University of California, San Diego. Another course well suited to the topic may be nonlinear wave dynamics in solids, especially the part on strongly nonlinear waves. About 100 problems presented in the book at the end of each chapter will help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I tried to follow a few rules in writing this book: (1) To focus on strongly nonlinear phenomena where there is no small parameter with respect to the amplitude of disturbance, including solitons, shock waves, and localized shear. (2) To take into account phenomena sensitive to materials structure, where typical space scale of material parameters (particle size, cell size) are presented in the models or are variable in experimental research.

Book Die target for Dynamic Powder Consolidation

Download or read book Die target for Dynamic Powder Consolidation written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A die/target is disclosed for consolidation of a powder, especially an atomized rapidly solidified metal powder, to produce monoliths by the dynamic action of a shock wave, especially a shock wave produced by the detonation of an explosive charge. The die/target comprises a rectangular metal block having a square primary surface with four rectangular mold cavities formed therein to receive the powder. The cavities are located away from the geometrical center of the primary surface and are distributed around such center while also being located away from the geometrical diagonals of the primary surface to reduce the action of reflected waves so as to avoid tensile cracking of the monoliths. The primary surface is covered by a powder retention plate which is engaged by a flyer plate to transmit the shock wave to the primary surface and the powder. Spawl plates are adhesively mounted on other surfaces of the block to act as momentum traps so as to reduce reflected waves in the block.

Book Science of Sintering

Download or read book Science of Sintering written by H. Palmour III and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, SCIENCE OF SINTERING: NEW DIRECTIONS FOR MATERIALS PROCESSING AND MICROSTRUCTURAL CONTROL, contains the edited Proceedings of the Seventh World Round Table Conference on Sintering, held in Herceg-Novi, Yugoslavia, Aug. 28 - Sept. 1, 1989. It was organized by the International Institute for the Science of Sintering (IISS), headquartered in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Every fourth year since 1969, the Institute has organized such a Round Table Conference on Sintering; each has taken place at some selected location within Yugoslavia. A separate series of IISS Topical Sintering Symposia (Summer Schools) have also been held at four year intervals, but they have been offset by about two years, so they occur between the main Conferences. As a rule, the Topical Sintering Symposia have been devoted to more specific topics and they also take place in different countries. The aim of these Conferences and their related "Summer Schools" has been to bring together scientists from all over the world who work in various fields of science and technology concerned with sintering and sintered materials. A total of seven IISS Conferences have been held over the period 1969-1989, and they have been supplemented by the four Topical Sintering Symposia held in Yugoslavia, Poland, India and Japan (in 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1987, respectively). This most recent five day Conference addressed the fundamental scientific background as well as the technological state-of-the-art pertinent to science of sintering and high technology sintered materials.
