Book Design of Seismic Isolated Structures

Download or read book Design of Seismic Isolated Structures written by Farzad Naeim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1999-03-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete, practical coverage of the evaluation, analysis, and design and code requirements of seismic isolation systems. Based on the concept of reducing seismic demand rather than increasing the earthquake resistance capacity of structures, seismic isolation is a surprisingly simple approach to earthquake protection. However, proper application of this technology within complex seismic design code requirements is both complicated and difficult. Design of Seismic Isolated Structures provides complete, up-to-date coverage of seismic isolation, complete with a systematic development of concepts in theory and practical application supplemented by numerical examples. This book helps design professionals navigate and understand the ideas and procedures involved in the analysis, design, and development of specifications for seismic isolated structures. It also provides a framework for satisfying code requirements while retaining the favorable cost-effective and damage control aspects of this new technology. An indispensable resource for practicing and aspiring engineers and architects, Design of Seismic Isolated Structures includes: * Isolation system components. * Complete coverage of code provisions for seismic isolation. * Mechanical characteristics and modeling of isolators. * Buckling and stability of elastomeric isolators. * Examples of seismic isolation designs. * Specifications for the design, manufacture, and testing of isolation devices.

Book Earthquake Resistant Design with Rubber

Download or read book Earthquake Resistant Design with Rubber written by James M. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Base isolation technology offers a cost-effective and reliable strategy for mitigating seismic damage to structures. The effectiveness of this new technology has been demonstrated not only in laboratory research, but also in the actual response of base-isolated buildings during earthquakes. Increasingly, new and existing buildings in earthquake-prone regions throughout the world are making use of this innovative strategy. In this expanded and updated edition, the design methods and guidelines associated with seismic isolation are detailed. The main focus of the book is on isolation systems that use a damped natural rubber. Topics covered include coupled lateral-torsional response, the behavior of multilayer bearings under compression and bending, and the buckling behavior of elastomeric bearings. Also featured is a section covering the recent changes in building code requirements.

Book Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake Japan

Download or read book Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake Japan written by Koichi Akai and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Book Executive Summary On Phase 3 Evaluation and Retrofitting of Multilevel and Multiple column Structures

Download or read book Executive Summary On Phase 3 Evaluation and Retrofitting of Multilevel and Multiple column Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the principal findings of a four year study for Caltrans of the seismic response of older multi-level, multi-column reinforced concrete bridge structures. Methods have been devised to improve prediction of the global response of these structures, to analyze and assess their local behavior, and to retrofit them to achieve adequate seismic behavior. The behavior of these structures has been found to be complex and influenced by a wide variety of parameters. Moreover, existing analysis methods often provide non-conservative estimates of behavior. The investigations conducted provide greater insight into the response characteristics of existing multiple column bridge structures. These have permitted development of improved analytical models and tools, retrofit strategies and design concepts.
