Book excerpt: Situated at the head of Lynn Canal are two sites of much importance to the history of the Kondike Gold Rush, one of the greatest adventures North America has known. At the mounth of the Taiya River is the abandoned site of Dyea, once the gateway to the Chilkoot Trail and the water route to the interior of the Yukon. Four miles to the southeast of Dyea, at the mouth of the Skagway River, lies the other major gateway to the goldfields by way of the White Pass TrailSkagway. The early history of these two towns in interrelated but today they are vastly different. Dyea has gone the way of the gold rush towns of the late 2800s and early 1900sit has crumbled to the dust from which it sprang in 1897. Skagway has fared better, and along with Dawson City and a few other remains, it represents the last vestiges of the gold rush.

Book Buffalo Soldiers in Alaska

Download or read book Buffalo Soldiers in Alaska written by Brian G. Shellum and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Skagway was born in 1897 after its population quintupled in under a year due to the Klondike gold rush. Balanced on the edge of anarchy, the U.S. Army stationed Company L, a unit of Buffalo Soldiers, there near the end of the gold rush. Buffalo Soldiers in Alaska tells the story of these African American soldiers who kept the peace during a volatile period in America's resource-rich North. It is a fascinating tale that features white officers and Black soldiers safeguarding U.S. territory, supporting the civil authorities, protecting Native Americans, fighting natural disasters, and serving proudly in America's last frontier. Despite the discipline and contributions of soldiers who served honorably, Skagway exhibited the era's persistent racism and maintained a clear color line. However, these Black Regulars carried out their complex and sometimes contradictory mission with a combination of professionalism and restraint that earned the grudging respect of the independently minded citizens of Alaska. The company used the popular sport of baseball to connect with the white citizens of Skagway and in the process gained some measure of acceptance. Though the soldiers left little trace in Skagway, a few remained after their enlistments and achieved success and recognition after settling in other parts of Alaska.

Book Skagway City of the New Century

Download or read book Skagway City of the New Century written by Jeff Brady and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shgagwai, as it was first called centuries before by the Tlingit for the “bunched up water” in its bay caused by strong winds, was “discovered” in 1887 by a father and son with visions of a gateway port to the riches of the Yukon and Alaska. Ten years later, after the discovery of gold in the Klondike, their vision came true with the arrival of prospectors from all over the world. The towns of Skaguay and nearby rival Dyea boomed. Each had multiple newspapers which chronicled the stampede and the competition between the White and Chilkoot passes, but Skagway would win the war with the construction of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway and settle on a way to spell its name. The community has survived smaller booms and busts since, but remains a vital tourism and industrial port as the Gateway to the Klondike. In 1898 editors called Skagway the “City of the New Century.” In this book of stories and photographs, the rich history of this area and its people is chronicled through that new century, and into the next.

Book excerpt: In this sequel to Nowhere Else to Go, but Dyea, we find transplanted white collar ex-convict Henry Stillwater with his poker-playing fellow "felons" in the middle of a mystery in the historic ghost town of Dyea (pronounced Di-eee). Stillwater has settled into a new life and love in the valley at the end of Alaska's Inside Passage, but his peace is disturbed by the discovery of a body, and a treasure of sorts that seemingly eludes all who pursue it, including wild, unruly critters large and small. Complicating Stillwater's life is a visit by the attorney daughter who sent him away to Alaska, but she too is absorbed by the mystery and where it takes them - to the summit of the Chilkoot Trail.
