Download or read book Dwellbeing written by Claire Bradbury and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, we have all questioned whether we feel truly nurtured by where we live. With 68 per cent of the world's population predicted to live in cities by 2050, Dwellbeing is a call to stand firm on the seven pillars we cherish and so desperately need from our city homes: wilderness, nourishment, movement, connection, dwelling, imagination and love. Claire Bradbury is the ultimate urban nomad: born in the South African bush, she has spent her life working and living in cities across the globe. As an environmentalist, sustainability expert and wellbeing advocate, she explores how we can change the story of our city homes to be about dwelling, rootedness and joy, rather than a relentless rat race. She has spoken to everyone from city dwellers, street artists and planners to chefs, DJs and architects around the world to unearth the everyday actions that have the power to enhance our lives. Dwellbeing celebrates the leaders, creators and urban heroes who are rewriting the script on urban living, helping us to make the shift from 'smart' to 'lovable' cities. This beautiful book shows that, when it comes to reimagining our urban futures, everyone has a voice.

Download or read book Dance Medicine Science Guide written by Adriano Bittar and published by Editora Kelps. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural actions of the Brazil-United Kingdom Dance Medicine & Science Network (BRUK NET) emerged through the organization of the symposium "The Potentials and Challenges of Research in Dance Medicine & Science: building innovation collaborations between the United Kingdom and Brazil" held in Goiânia, in 2016. In this bilingual Portuguese-English book, 23 leading researchers/authors from the BRUK NET write about their experiences in this field. The idea of the book is to share part of their knowledge and to build paths and theoretical, conceptual and methodological constructs around DMS, from where visibility, access and sustainability could develop. The desire for an interinstitutional, interdisciplinary, collective and supportive cooperation has enabled us to create a book of cross-cutting contexts and diverse views. The demand for DMS services and knowledge is growing. It requires that professionals from different backgrounds; dance, health, education and many others, ethically reflect and debate over the breadth and rigor necessary for the growth and valorization of this field of study.
Download or read book Wellbeing written by Timothy Besley and published by LSE Press. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments in liberal democracies pursue social welfare, but in many different ways. The wellbeing approach instead asks: Why not focus directly on increasing measured human happiness? Why not try to improve people’s overall quality of life, as it is subjectively seen by citizens themselves? The radical implications of this stance include shifting attention to previously neglected areas (such as mental health and ‘social infrastructure’ services) and developing defensible measures of overall wellbeing or quality of life indicators. Can one ‘master’ concept of wellbeing work to create more holism in policy-making? Or should we stick with multiple metrics? These debates have been live in relation to an alternative ‘capacities’ approaches, and they are well-developed in health policymaking. Most recently, the connections between wellbeing and political participation have come into sharper focus. Wellbeing remains a contested concept, one that can be interpreted and used differently, with consequences for how it is incorporated into policy decisions. By bringing together scholars from economics, psychology and behavioural science, philosophy and political science, the authors explore how different disciplinary approaches can contribute to the study of wellbeing and how this can shape policy priorities.

Download or read book Accelerate written by James Brooke-Smith and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s was the decade in which the Soviet Union collapsed and Francis Fukuyama declared the 'end of history'. Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Google was launched and scientists in Edinburgh cloned a sheep from a single cell. It was also a time in which the president of the United States discussed fellatio on network television and the world's most photographed woman died in a car crash in Paris. Radical pop band The KLF burned a million quid on a Scottish island, while the most-watched programme on TV was Baywatch. Anti-globalisation protestors in France attacked McDonald's restaurants and American survivalists stockpiled guns and tinned food in preparation for Y2K. For those who lived through it, the 1990s glow in the memory with a mixture of proximity and distance, familiarity and strangeness. It is the decade about which we know so much yet understand too little. Taking a kaleidoscopic view of the politics, social history, arts and popular culture of the era, James Brooke-Smith asks – what was the 1990s? A lost golden age of liberal optimism? A time of fin-de-siècle decadence? Or the seedbed for the discontents we face today?
