Book Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino

Download or read book Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino written by William Henry Scott and published by . This book was released on 1992-06-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we know so much more about Philippine history, than was the case say ten or twenty years ago, the task of reconstructing and reinterpreting it in light of centuries of misinterpretations, distortions and omissions remains a formidable and overwhelming one. To compensate for this horrendous neglect of our history, we need to identify and rectify the imbalances in historical scholarship, to apply the best techniques, use the best perspectives not only of the discipline of history but also those of sister disciplines in the social sciences and humanities as well as access the voluminous historical data in archives and libraries in many parts of the world. It hardly need be stated that there is also a need to re-read the earlier historical presentations for many of them have served only to obscure the real contours of our development as a people. We have reached a stage in our historical development where the rescue of our culture is of utmost importance: we must make any aspect of our culture ever present and easy of access to see its assonance with (or significance in) our present life and to free it from the alienating forces that have prevented its self-appraisal. Obviously, any scholar who engages in the above process would also contribute to the affirmation of the Filipino identity and provide substance to the truism that history can be an instrument of liberation.

Download or read book Mega Brain written by Michael Hutchinson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists have learned more about the brain in the last decade than in all of previous history, and the implications of the latest research are clear: The human brain is far more powerful, and has the potential for immensely greater growth and transformation, than was ever before imagined. These discoveries may constitute the most significant development in learning since the invention of writing. Michael Hutchison captures all the drama, excitement, and adventure as we finally begin to comprehend the most mysterious and complex structure in the universe, the source of human culture, a still untapped reservoir of power and skills. He looks at the recently developed machines and devices that may soon allow us to increase brain size and intelligence; regenerate brain cells; trigger specific brain states such as euphoria, long- and short-term memory, sexual excitement, and creativity; and control the brain's electrical activity in order to alter such "involuntary" mechanisms as blood pressure, heart rate, and the secretion of hormones. Megabrain is a lucid and lively account of where the pioneers in brain research are headed -- and where they are taking us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MOTHER AMERKA A Living Story of Democracy BY CARLOS P. ROMULO DOUBLEDAY. DORAN COMPANY. INC. GARDEN CITY. NEW YORK 1943 Press, GARDB ci Y, N. T u, 8. A. CI, COPYRIGHT, 1943 BY CARIES P. ROMULO ALL RIGHTS kESfiRVED FIRST EDITION Dedicated To the Filipino soldiers who fought and died beside Americans on Bataan and Corregidor in defense of the Philippines, and to their brothers in the Far East the one billion inarticulate Orientals who are daring to lift their eyes toward the dazzimg hope of freedom. AUTHORS NOTE THE FIRST FOUR DOCUMENTS included in the Appendix . are the Magna Charta of the Philippines. They show the im portant steps in the evolution of the Filipino people to self government. That the Filipinos believed in democracy and thought along republican lines even before the advent of American rule in the Philippines is shown by I The Con stitution approved by the Philippine Republic in 1899. PREFATORY NOTE THIS is a living story of democracy. It is political science per sonalized. Americas work in the Philippines is a masterpiece in human relationship because it is human. I write it as a Filipino who is one of the beneficiaries of Philip pine-American collaboration. I write it so that America may know what she achieved in the Philippines. I write it also for the world that subject races may be informed of how the Filipino people in creasingly fought for their freedom, and that sovereign nations may profit by the example of America. For America was the only sov ereign nation in the Far East that in its hour of danger was able to count on the loyalty of its subject people. I write as a private citizen of the Philippines. The views expressed in this book are mine and are notofficial. I presume to speak for no government But I am convinced I bespeak the sentiments of all my Filipino comrades-in-arms who fought in Bataan and Corregidor. We know why and what we fought for there. My acknowledgment goes to President Manuel L. Quezon, who granted me leave of absence without pay from the Philippine Army and later placed me on inactive military status to General Douglas MacArthur, for having sent me to America from Australia on special detail to Harold Matson, for valuable advice and help to Evelyn Wells, my loyal friend, for research and co-operation and to Solomon Arnaldo of the office of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, for the appendices. I must not forget to dedicate a few words of appreciation to the memory of the late Very Reverend Father James M. Drought, Vicar General of the Maryknoll Mission, with whom, before his untimely death, I discussed various portions of this book. CARLOS P. ROMULO CONTENTS PAGE Introduction.
