Book Fracture Mechanics of Ductile and Tough Materials and its Applications to Energy Related Structures

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Ductile and Tough Materials and its Applications to Energy Related Structures written by H.W. Liu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the USA-Japan Joint Seminar on "Fracture Mechanics of Ductile and Tough Materials and Its Applications to Energy Related Structures". The seminar was supported jointly by the National Science Foundation of the United States and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences. The seminar was held from November 12th to 16th, 1979, at Hayama, Japan, a picturesque resort town by the beach of Sagami Bay facing Mt. Fugi. The safety and integrity of the engineering structures for energy explora tion, energy production, and energy transportation are of utmost importance to our welfare. Both the United States and Japan are at the forefront of the re search on fracture mechanics and its applications to fracture prevention. Dur ing the past few years, major research efforts have been made in the areas of non-linear fracture mechanics and its applications to fracture initiation, slow crack growth, creep and fatigue. This joint seminar offered an unique opportunity for detailed exchange of information on current researches and fu ture efforts.

Book ASTM E08 07 09 Analytical Round Robin on the Use of DC Electrical Potential Difference for the Measurement of Crack Size in Ductile Fracture Testing

Download or read book ASTM E08 07 09 Analytical Round Robin on the Use of DC Electrical Potential Difference for the Measurement of Crack Size in Ductile Fracture Testing written by E. Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Direct Current Electrical Potential Difference (DCEPD) technique has been used for many years in fatigue and fracture testing for monitoring crack propagation in metallic materials. The principle of DCEPD methods is that when a constant current flows through a cracked specimen, the voltage change measured across the crack plane can be analytically related, empirically related, or both, to the change in crack size. In fatigue testing, performed within the limits of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, crack propagation is the sole source of potential change. In ductile fracture testing, additional contributions from specimen dimension changes and crack-tip plastic deformation (blunting) have to be accounted for and distinguished from the DCEPD increase caused by crack growth. The ASTM E08.07.09 Task Group, formed in 2013 and chaired by the author, has been developing an annex for ASTM E1820, Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fracture Toughness, which focuses on the use of DCEPD measurements for the prediction of crack size and crack extension in ductile fracture toughness tests. This article presents the analysis of an analytical round-robin, in which 8 participants analyzed 24 existing fracture toughness data sets using two different approaches, based on the analysis of the displacement versus DCEPD and force versus DCEPD, respectively. The comparison between these two approaches and the implications for the ASTM E1820 annex being developed are the focus of this article.

Book Contact and Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Contact and Fracture Mechanics written by Pranav H. Darji and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains two sections: Chapters 1-7 deal with contact mechanics, and Chapters 8-13 deal with fracture mechanics. The different contributions of this book will cover the various advanced topics of research. It provides some needed background with respect to contact mechanics, fracture mechanics and the use of finite element methods in both. All the covered chapters of this book are of a theoretical and applied nature, suitable for the researchers of engineering, physics, applied mathematics and mechanics with an interest in computer simulation of contact and fracture problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented at the symposium on [title] held in Indianapolis, Indiana, May 1991, provide a framework for quantifying constraint effects in terms of both continuum mechanics and micro-mechanical modeling approaches. Such a framework is useful in establishing accurate predictions of the fracture

Book A DC Potential Drop Procedure for Crack Initiation and R Curve Measurements During Ductile Fracture Tests

Download or read book A DC Potential Drop Procedure for Crack Initiation and R Curve Measurements During Ductile Fracture Tests written by A. Bakker and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the use of a direct current (DC) potential drop technique, a single-specimen technique for the detection of crack growth initiation and subsequent crack growth. From an analysis of the potential drop signal, where the measured signal is divided into parts originating from real physical crack growth and fictitious crack growth caused by deformation of the specimen, a procedure is described to derive both crack initiation and crack growth from the test records of a single specimen. This procedure is then applied to a series of three-point bend (SENB) specimens and the results are compared with the multiple-specimen technique according to the ASTM Test for JIc, a Measure of Fracture Toughness (E 813). The agreement between the results of both methods is satisfactory. Finally, some possible refinements and further improvements of the method are discussed.

Book Fracture Mechanics Testing Methods for Polymers Adhesives and Composites

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics Testing Methods for Polymers Adhesives and Composites written by D.R. Moore and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-03-09 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an overview of ESIS Technical Committee 4's activities since the mid-1980s. A wide range of tests is described and the numerous authors is a reflection of the wide and enthusiastic support we have had. With the establishment of the Technical Committee 4, two major areas were identified as appropriate for the activity. Firstly there was an urgent need for standard, fracture mechanics based, test methods to be designed for polymers and composites. A good deal of academic work had been done, but the usefulness to industry was limited by the lack of agreed standards. Secondly there was a perceived need to explore the use of such data in the design of plastic parts. Some modest efforts were made in early meetings to explore this, but little progress was made. In contrast things moved along briskly in the standards work and this has dominated the activity for the last fourteen years. The design issue remains a future goal.
