Country–girl Cressida Knight fills her days with her farm, a mischievous pet bull called Reggie and her volunteer emergency services work. The busier she keeps, the less she thinks about the cowboy who left her behind. She's convinced the small–town Woodlea grapevine that she's moved on, but now it's time to move on for real. Champion bull rider Denham Rigby shares Cressy's deep love for the land and all he's ever wanted was to stand shoulder–to–shoulder with Cressy through life. But three years ago a dark family secret left him no choice but to run. Now family duty gives him no choice but to return to the bush. What Denham hasn't come home to do is to hurt Cressy by rekindling their relationship. He's nothing but a liability and the beautiful, self–reliant cowgirl has to stay off limits. But when faced with Cressy's desperation to save her drought–stricken farm, he can't keep his distance. He joins her out droving on the long paddock. Then when Woodlea is hit by more than just rodeo fever, they are further thrown together and Denham loses the battle to lock down his emotions. But has he left it too late to stop running? And will the woman he's always loved be prepared to risk her heart for a second time?

Book excerpt: The initial print run sold out in weeks, this stock is from the publisher's reprint. The Drover - droving captured through the lens of a camera The red dust swirls around you, filling your lungs and coating your face, the cattle low as they march onwards, you crack a cold one at the end of a long hot day. The path of a drover is a long and difficult one. Droving is woven in the fabric of Australian history, but droving cattle long distances is a rare event today. Now you can view the epic Brinkworth drove, as captured through the lens of photographer Al Mabin in her new book The Drover. During last year's severe drought, South Australian farmer Tom Brinkworth purchased 18,000 cattle from AACo properties. The $8 million transaction was the largest single purchase in the history of Elders Livestock.Having purchased the cattle, the next question was how to get them home to Brinkworth's 35,000 hectare property Uardry Station near Hay, New South Wales. Doing the sums, the cost of trucking the cattle was roughly the same as walking them down. The journey started in June last year, covering 2000km and crossing two states, as the cattle were walked south 'On the Long Paddock'. Mabin, who is building a reputation for her ability to capture spectacular photos of the Australian outback, tracked down the phone number of head drover Bill Little and asked if she could take photos of the drove one weekend. She found herself thrown on a horse and joining the drove. Heading home and scrolling through the photos, she realised she was missing the cattle and yearning for the drove. She decided to return and photograph all nine mobs. The result is the stunning coffee table book The Drover, going to the heart of droving, the people, and most importantly - the cattle. This book is sure to appeal to anyone who has ever fallen in love with the outback, and those who inhabit it.

Download or read book Poetry for the Planet written by Julia Kaylock and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Time in the palm of our hands.' -Peter Ramm What role might poetry have in saving our planet? It is becoming increasingly clear that we all need to contribute to ensure the survival of our planet; new narratives are urgently called for. Ecopoetry has become a genre within which poets put up a searching and at times brutally honest lens through which to consider climate change, loss of biodiversity, the pollution of our air and water, and environmentally damaging industries such as mining and deforestation. Poetry for the Planet showcases the work of one hundred poets from Australia and New Zealand. Despite an astonishing variety in style, poems are united in their plea to all of us to forge a new relationship with our fractured world, and move from an attitude of short-term exploitation to one of nourishment and sustainability. All proceeds from the sale of this book to be directed to the Australian Conservation Foundation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These one hundred and fifty true stories give voice to the many men and women who played an important part in establishing Australia's pioneering spirit but who mostly didn't make it into the history books. Drawn from the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame 'Unsung Heroes' database, they reveal the characters who were drovers, property owners, shearers, missionaries and amateur explorers. They bring outback history alive as do tales of the bush folk who built the fences, baked the bread, taught the children, provided entertainment, shod the horses, tended the sick and enforced the law. From veteran expeditioner Ned Ryan, to possum trapper Harry Stevens, Boer War veteran Jack Kyle-Little and eccentric pioneers Charles and Cora Chalmers, these are stories of resilience, courage and luck, about people with more grit than an outback sandstorm. 'This is the essence of what Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson wrote about . . .' John Williamson All royalites from the sales of this book go to the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre. Situated in Queensland's central western town of Longreach, it is Australia's premier outback heritage destination.

Download or read book Pastoral Australia written by Michael Pearson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Australia tells the story of the expansion of Australia's pastoral industry, how it drove European settlement and involved Aboriginal people in the new settler society. The rural life that once saw Australia 'ride on the sheep's back' is no longer what defines us, yet it is largely our history as a pastoral nation that has endured in heritage places and which is embedded in our self-image as Australians. The challenges of sustaining a pastoral industry in Australia make a compelling story of their own. Developing livestock breeds able to prosper in the Australian environment was an ongoing challenge, as was getting wool and meat to market. Many stock routes, wool stores, abattoirs, wharf facilities, railways, roads, and river and ocean transport systems that were developed to link the pastoral interior with the urban and market infrastructure still survive. Windmills, fences, homesteads, shearing sheds, bores, stock yards, travelling stock routes, bush roads and railheads all changed the look of the country. These features of our landscape form an important part of our heritage. They are symbols of a pastoral Australia, and of the foundations of our national identity, which will endure long into the future.
Download or read book Applications of Seasonal Climate Forecasting in Agricultural and Natural Ecosystems written by Graeme L. Hammer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate variability has major impacts in many parts of the world, including Australia. Developments in understanding of the El Niño - Southern Oscillation Phenomenon have introduced some skill in seasonal to inter-annual climate forecasting. Can this skill be harnessed to advantage? Or do we just continue to observe these impacts? How does a decision-maker managing an agricultural or natural ecosystem modify decisions in response to a skillful, but imprecise, seasonal climate forecast? Using Australian experience as a basis, this book focuses on these questions in pursuing means to better manage climate risks. The state of the science in climate forecasting is reviewed before considering detailed examples of applications to: farm scale agricultural decisions (such as management of cropping and grazing systems); regional and national scale agricultural decisions (such as commodity trading and government policy); and natural systems (such as water resources, pests and diseases, and natural fauna). Many of the examples highlight the participatory and inter-disciplinary approach required among decision-makers, resource systems scientists/analysts, and climate scientists to bring about the effective applications. The experiences discussed provide valuable insights beyond the geographical and disciplinary focus of this book. The book is ideally suited to professionals and postgraduate students in ecology, agricultural climatology, environmental planning, and climate science.
Download or read book Norwich Since 1550 written by Carole Rawcliffe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwich remained the second largest city in England until the eighteenth century. Its history over the last 450 years is of exceptional interest. Norwich since 1550 is a full account of the post-medieval history of the city and covers all aspects of Norwich life, including its population, housing, churches and chapels, politics, work, education, arts, architecture and medical care. It brings out Norwich's individuality and shows how it became the city it is today. While it changed and developed in many ways over the centuries, its textiles could not compete with those of the northern boom towns of the Industrial Revolution. Instead it settled into its role as a regional and banking capital.
