Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, intelligible and interesting portrait of Ancient Indian History and Civilization from a national historical point of view. The work is divided into three broad divisions of the natural course of cultural development in Ancient India: (1) From the prehistoric age to 600 B.C., (2) From 600 B.C. to 300 A.D., (3) From 300 A.D. to 1200 A.D. The work describes the political, economic, religious and cultural conditions of the country, the expansionist activities, the colonisation schemes of her rulers in the Far East. Political theories and administrative organizations are also discussed but more stress has been laid on the religious, literary and cultural aspects of Ancient India. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 330 colour 80 b/w illustrations Description: This is the first time that earrings worn in ancient India are studied comprehensively taking into account the excavated material which is compared to the earrings depicted on the sculptures of the different periods. A classification is attempted on the basis of types, shapes, materials and periods. Some revealing conclusions emerge, like the perennity of some forms, the permanency of the symbols depicted on them, which are mostly solar, their origin in the Harappan culture, and the geographical unity of the usage of certain types. A large number of coloured photographs show the earrings worn from the Harappan period into medieval India. The moulds to make metal earrings are also studied - particularly, the controversial stone discs and rings. Additionally, the nandipada or taurine symbol, the Mother Goddess, the conch shell, the beads, amulets, as also solar symbolism are studied in separate appendices, since they are relevant to this subject.

Book Foreign Influence on Ancient India

Download or read book Foreign Influence on Ancient India written by Krishna Chandra Sagar and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1992 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book dealing with the foreign influence on ancient India. Discusses the foreign invasions of India by the Achaemenians, Greeks, Sakas, Kushans, Sassanians, Pahlavas and the Hunas, and also the peaceful impact of the Romans on India. The book advances a theory that ancient India never provided any casus belli to the foreigners to attack her. It was India's weakness and an implied confidence in future victories that kept the invaders coming to India one after another. But these foreigners have also influenced India in the field of administration, religion, philosophy, astronomy, language, script, trade and commerce, and above all the way of life of the people of India, which is the main subject of the book. This book suggests that after the partition of this sub-continent, the name `India' which continued to be used for this country is a misnomer when the river INDUS after which the country was so named, went to Pakistan. This book also finds is real nature the matrimonial alliance between Seleucus and Chandra Gupta Maurya and gives possible solutions to some riddles of Indian history. The origin of the name of KIDAR has also been discovered for the first time. The book tells us in a poetic language how ‘the golden age of the Guptas was converted into a molten age of destruction and confusion’ by the Hunas. What remained of our culture after so much turmoil and changes is before us.
