Book Sediment Dredging at Superfund Megasites

Download or read book Sediment Dredging at Superfund Megasites written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the nation's estuaries, lakes and other water bodies contain contaminated sediments that can adversely affect fish and wildlife and may then find their way into people's diets. Dredging is one of the few options available for attempting to clean up contaminated sediments, but it can uncover and re-suspend buried contaminants, creating additional exposures for wildlife and people. At the request of Congress, EPA asked the National Research Council (NRC) to evaluate dredging as a cleanup technique. The book finds that, based on a review of available evidence, dredging's ability to decrease environmental and health risks is still an open question. Analysis of pre-dredging and post-dredging at about 20 sites found a wide range of outcomes in terms of surface sediment concentrations of contaminants: some sites showed increases, some no change, and some decreases in concentrations. Evaluating the potential long-term benefits of dredging will require that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency step up monitoring activities before, during and after individual cleanups to determine whether it is working there and what combinations of techniques are most effective.

Book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat

Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Book Disposal of Dredge Spoil

Download or read book Disposal of Dredge Spoil written by Marden B. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents an assessment of the dredge spoil disposal problem and outlines a research program designed to provide needed information concerning current and potential spoil disposal practices. The report format is intended to reflect the two basic objectives of the report. Section A is directed toward management level review and presents (a) pertinent background information concerning the dredge spoil disposal problem and the current study, (b) conclusions and recommendations resulting from the problem assessment phase of the study, and (c) an outline of the recommended research program. Section B provides an objective assessment of the nationwide problem in sufficient detail to permit meaningful technical review by other interested personnel within and outside the Corps. Section C has been included to show a total-problem organizational structure which is being used to guide the development of the detailed research plan.

Download or read book Dredging Coastal Ports written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-02-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are the nation's ports adequate for our present and future needs? This volume points out that no significant new deep-water construction has occurred for a decade, and provides the information and analysis needed to goad the ports and the federal government into action. The book asks three questions: Is additional port construction and maintenance dredging needed now or over the next 20 years? What would prevent dredging if it is needed? What alternatives could make additional dredging possible? The book identifies several problems in dredging ports, including the long interval between a decision to deepen a port and the time the alterations are complete. The United States needs to speed port construction to meet changing needs, and the committee recommends that we prepare for future needs by dredging now.

Book Dredging Research Volume 2 Number 1

Download or read book Dredging Research Volume 2 Number 1 written by Elke Briuer and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns about dredging operations, especially the placement of material and its impact on natural resources, have long been expressed by state, local and federal agencies, and environmental groups concerned in the dredging process. Dredging and placement of dredged material, especially contaminated sediments, is therefore a politically and environmentally sensitive issue. Inspectors for the Corps of Engineers closely monitor dredging activities performed under contract for quality control and performance. However, effective automated monitoring systems on all dredges working on Corps projects could provide useful, accurate, and unbiased information to all parties involved in the dredging and placement process. That information is important in verifying compliance with project specifications and environmental constraints. The Dredging Operations and Environmental Research (DOER) Program addresses the need for automated inspection methods in its Instrumentation Focus Area.

Book excerpt: Through the Dredging Research Program (DRP), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is investigating the use of nearshore berms to place dredged material in the littoral system and provide wave attenuation in the berm's lee. Monitoring at some prototype sites has provided good overall information for this investigation but lacks the detail needed to develop more sophisticated design guidance. As one element of the SUPERTANK Laboratory Data Collection Project, the United States' first prototype-scale, moveable-bed, physical model study of submerged nearshore berms was conducted in 1991. The overall SUPERTANK experiment was a cooperative effort among many interests, including Technical Area 1 (Analysis of Dredged Material Placed in Open Water) and Technical Area 5 (Management of Dredging Projects) of the DRP.
