Book excerpt: As I wake, the worlds collide, melting into one another. Reality gives way to alternatives, one narrative ends; beginning another. Sleeping; dreams left behind, giving way to waking dreams. Real giving in to the surreal, the story in another form. While waking I am not sure where I am, living within and between worlds. As yet unfocused and unsure; I am awake nonetheless. Is it all just one? Is it the same story? When awake; how will I know when I’m awake? Is this real or that? Can I turn the page, burn it to a new age? The world seems both logical and irrational at the same time. This simultaneous mixture of real and unreal, rational and irrational, creates quite a sensation and conjures an eerie ambiguity. Dreams seem to be a loosening of the psychological reins, which tend to remain taut throughout the day. The brain chemistry of the sleeping mind is different to that of the waking mind, which may in part account for some of the odd and mysterious symbols that show up. How fragile is this difference within dream life and waking life? Many have posed the question are we all living in a dream world where the unconscious secretly dictates our every thought? Are we asleep or are we awake? Does it have to be one or the other? Are these truly separate states? Ambiguity makes it possible for humans to ponder many interpretations of a single thing, an event or experience, constantly fascinated with alternating states of thought.

Book Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema

Download or read book Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema written by Francesco Pascuzzi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreamscapes in Italian Cinema explores different representations of dreams, visions, hallucinations, and hypnagogic states in Italian film culture, covering the works of some of the most significant auteurs in the history of Italian cinema (Fellini, Pasolini, Moretti, Bellocchio, among others). Dreams are discussed both in a filmic context, considering the diegetic and formal techniques employed to construct and represent them, and as allegories or metaphors in a broader cultural, political, and social sense (the film industry itself as the proverbial dream factory, and dreams as hopes, aspirations or altogether parallel universes, for example). The book covers works released over different decades and spanning multiple genres (drama, gothic film, horror, comedy), and it is intended to shed light on a topic that is as suggestive as it is insufficiently studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom's mundane existence underwent a profound transformation when he discovered the extraordinary potential of his newfound ability. Dreams became the vivid canvas for his imagination, offering a realm where he could soar through the skies, converse with talking animals, and embark on incredible adventures. Unbeknownst to him, this revelation marked only the inception of a journey that would blur the lines between the waking world and the enchanting domain of dreams. As Tom delved deeper into the fantastical dreamscape, he encountered beings that defied the laws of nature. Majestic, winged lions left trails of sparkling stardust in their wake, while friendly sprites flitted between the branches of luminescent trees, their laughter echoing like wind chimes. In the Dreamer's Chamber, where dreams intertwined in a delicate dance, Tom sensed a disturbance. The ethereal Dream Keepers reflected concern, revealing a looming threat—The Dream Thief, a dark echo born from forgotten nightmares, harboured malevolent intentions to exploit children's dreams. On a crisp afternoon, bathed in golden sunlight streaming through the library's windows, Tom was drawn to an unexplored section. In a forgotten corner where time seemed to slow, he discovered a peculiar book—a tome unlike any other. Nestled between weathered spines and forgotten tales, the enigmatic Dreamer's Code awaited. The library, once a familiar haven, transformed into a portal to the unknown as Tom deciphered ancient symbols, embarking on a magical adventure where the ordinary converged with the extraordinary. Each page of the cryptic tome revealed not just symbols, but a narrative woven into the fabric of dreams—the forgotten prophecy. In the glow of a single candle, Tom read about a time when dreams held the power to shape reality. The prophecy spoke of a chosen Dreamer destined to traverse the Dream Realm and restore balance disrupted by encroaching darkness. As night fell, Tom found himself drawn back into the mystical embrace of "The Boy Called Dreamer." The prophecy's words resonated with the symbols he had deciphered, realizing that he was the chosen Dreamer fated to embark on a quest beyond the waking world. The weight of destiny settled on Tom's young shoulders, eliciting a mix of excitement and trepidation. The Dream Realm unfolded before Tom like a canvas painted with the hues of imagination—enchanted landscapes adorned with floating islands of cotton candy clouds and rivers sparkling with starlight wishes. Amidst this dreamscape, three radiant figures emerged—Lumara, Zephyr, and Whisper, the Dream Keepers. Lumara embodied the hopes within every dream, Zephyr symbolized the freedom of flight, and Whisper held the secrets lurking in dream shadows. Now, the once-enchanted Dream Realm faced imminent peril, and Tom, as the chosen Dreamer, bore the weight of preserving its existence amidst encroaching shadows.

Book Dream or Nightmare

Download or read book Dream or Nightmare written by Stephen Duncombe and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream or Nightmare is a book of left wing strategy like no other: It proposes that, to compete with the right, progressives cannot depend on reason and hard fact. They must also deploy drama in the battle of ideas. Donald Trump’s presidency has shown how this is done, albeit to ends that are deplorable. Abandoning logic and truth, the Fabulist in Chief conjures up spectacle to energize his base. Troops are dispatched to counter a fictional threat from convoys of helpless refugees. A powerful Supreme Court nominee is reduced to tears by accusations from a woman who has been sexually assaulted. Open fascists are described as “good people,” physical attacks on journalists are lauded in front of cheering crowds. If they are to engage with this Barnum-like politics, leftists must learn how to communicate in today’s “vernacular of the spectacular,” invoking symbol and emotion themselves, as well as truth. Matching the right in this fashion does not mean adopting its values. Rather Duncombe sets out what he calls a politics of “ethical spectacle.” Of extraordinary relevance to the dark carnival of contemporary politics, this new edition of the book formerly known as Dream sets out an electrifying new vision of progressive politics that is both persuasive and provocative. Stephen Duncombe is Professor of Media and Culture at New York University and author and editor of six books on the intersection of culture and politics. Duncombe, a life-long political activist, co-founded a community-based advocacy group in the Lower East Side of Manhattan which won an award for “Creative Activism” from the Abbie Hoffman Foundation, and is currently co-director of the Center for Artistic Activism, a research and training organization that helps activists create more like artists and artists strategize more like activists.

Book excerpt: What practical lessons can we learn from corporate theme parks, ad campaigns, video games, celebrity culture and Las Vegas? Can such examples of popular fantasy help us define and make possible a new political future? This is the case for a progressive political strategy that embraces a new set of tools. Although fantasy and spectacle have become the lingua franca of our time, Duncombe points out that liberals continue to depend upon sober reason to guide them. Instead, they need to learn how to communicate in today's spectacular vernacular.
