Download or read book Drawing and the Senses written by Caroline O. Fowler and published by Harvey Miller. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of drawing and philosophy in artistic practice, important not only for art history but also for literature studies, intellectual history, religious history, history of the book, and history of science. 00Leon Battista Alberti wrote in 'De pictura' (1435) that painting is divine because, ?as they say of friendship, a painting lets the absent be present.? Absence and Presence in Early-Modern Drawing Pedagogy examines this relationship between absent and present objects and subjects in early-modern artistic pedagogy. This book studies the intersections among artistic treatises, natural philosophy and theology from 1400-1700, arguing that drawing pedagogy sought to teach the painting of histories that stimulated in the viewer the sensation of being present before the historical moment, the person, the still life. The manifestation of presence remained not only in the sensation of sight but also in all the sensory perceptions of touch, taste, smell and the sixth sense of sensing, the experience of existence. This book demonstrates the pedagogical means by which artists sought to teach the simulation of presence (and the sensorial perception of absence

Download or read book Print Culture in Early Modern France written by Carl Goldstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Carl Goldstein examines the print culture of seventeenth-century France through a study of the career of Abraham Bosse, a well-known printmaker, book illustrator, and author of books and pamphlets on a variety of technical subjects. The consummate print professional, Bosse persistently explored the endless possibilities of print – single-sheet prints combining text and image, book illustration, broadsides, placards, almanacs, theses, and pamphlets. Bosse had a profound understanding of print technology as a fundamental agent of change. Unlike previous studies, which have largely focused on the printed word, this book demonstrates the extent to which the contributions of an individual printmaker and the visual image are fundamental to understanding the nature and development of early modern print culture.

Download or read book The Four Horsemen written by Cathy Leahy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe experienced great turmoil between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Bitter religious conflicts, war and other disasters such as plague and famine generated deep anxieties and were increasingly read as divine punishments or warnings that the Last Days were imminent. Artists gave expression to these fears in a range of extraordinary images that are analysed in depth in this publication. Illustrations of the Apocalypse, as well as images of skeletons personifying Death, and of physically deformed creatures, extreme natural phenomena and diabolical witches were all manifestations of the sense of impending social and religious crisis. Lavishly illustrated with works by artists including Albrecht Drer, Jacques de Gheyn II and Stefano della Bella, The Four Horsemen: Apocalypse, Death and Disaster provides a fascinating insight into the art, culture and turbulent times in later medieval, Renaissance and early modern Europe.
Download or read book Art and Love in Renaissance Italy written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many famous artworks of the Italian Renaissance were made to celebrate love, marriage, and family. They were the pinnacles of a tradition, dating from early in the era, of commemorating betrothals, marriages, and the birth of children by commissioning extraordinary objects - maiolica, glassware, jewels, textiles, paintings - that were often also exchanged as gifts. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of artworks arising from Renaissance rituals of love and marriage and makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. The impressive range of works gathered in these pages extends from birth trays painted in the early fifteenth century to large canvases on mythological themes that Titian painted in the mid-1500s. Each work of art would have been recognized by contemporary viewers for its prescribed function within the private, domestic domain."--BOOK JACKET.

This book is essential for anyone seeking a visual history and interesting perspectives of grand gardens--from the Villa d'Este and Versailles to contemporary experiences of city parks."--Marilyn Symmes, editor and author, Fountains: Splash and Spectacle, Water and Design from the Renaissance to the Present "The Changing Garden is the first book that asks us to stop and appreciate many of the 'documents' of the history of European and American gardens. It addresses the development of the representation of gardens, and the story it tells proves to be a fascinating chapter in the history of art, particularly for the history of prints and engravings."--Guy Walton, author of Louis XIV's Versailles

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventeenth century, many young artists from the north and south of the Netherlands gained experience in Rome. However, that Flemish artists in Genoa contributed to lively artistic exchange and trade is less known. In this book the author Alison Johnston Stoesser throws new light on their activities during that day and age, particularly on those of the brothers Lucas and Cornelis de Wael. As artists and dealers, the brothers had connections with many key figures in the Flemish and Genoese art world, including the painter Anthony Van Dyck. For forty years Cornelis, the youngest brother, enjoyed great successes with his paintings of everyday scenes, fairs, and field and naval battles. In addition, the brothers sold the works of other artists as well as many other objects of devotion.

Download or read book Rembrandt s Elephant Following in Hansken s Footsteps written by Michiel Roscam Abbing and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elephants used to be a great rarity in Europe: there were only a few elephants in the continent in the entire seventeenth century. Hansken, a female elephant who was born on the island of Sri Lanka and arrived in Amsterdam in the summer of 1633, is the most famous ? and not just because Rembrandt drew her. Cornelis van Groenevelt, Hansken?s owner, earned a handsome living by teaching her tricks and touring the continent with her. Wherever she went, Hansken evoked amazement and admiration. People examined her, measured her and wrote down what they had seen.0Michiel Roscam Abbing tells Hansken?s story based on a meticulous analysis of the sources. He has reconstructed the route Hansken took. The traces left by Hansken in European cultural history also form a potent picture of the age. After Hansken?s death in 1655, her skeleton became the object of study, enabling myths about giants to be refuted. She was even used for the first scientific description of her species, Elephas maximus.0As a follow-up to 'Rembrandt?s Elephant, The Story of Hansken' (2006, ISBN 9789080874565), which was also published by Leporello.00Translation of ' Rembrandts olifant. In het spoor van Hansken', ISBN 9789079624195, Amsterdam: Leporello (2016). Translation by Clare Wilkinson.

Book excerpt: This beautiful and important book highlights the collection of European drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, one of America's premier university museums. From intimate studies to exquisite finished compositions, this selection of works documents the history of European drawing practices beginning with late-medieval model books and progressing to the verge of the modern period. The accompanying text--written by a team of scholars--offers a unique introduction to various critical and technical aspects of the study of master drawings, brought to life through drawings from a range of national schools and in a variety of media. Among the drawings examined in this handsomely produced volume are an animated pen and ink sketch by Giulio Romano, a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, a forceful and humorous caricature by Guercino, a scene from the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a delicate portrait by Edgar Degas.
