Book El Arte Nuevo de Estudiar Comedias

Download or read book El Arte Nuevo de Estudiar Comedias written by Barbara Simerka and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This anthology of "new" approches to literary study takes its name from Lope de Vega's Arte nuevo de hacer comedias. Like Lope's poem on poetics, this volume also operates as a defense, in the sense that many of the articles include a defense of the usefulness of literary theory in general, and of their chosen approach in particular, for enriching the study of the comedia." "In these essays, it is the not quite new art of "estudiar" rather than "hacer" drama that is the central concern, the contributors defending theoretical innovations approximately twenty years after James Parr, in the pages of Hispania, issued his challenge to Hispanists to update their approach. This volume, which combines innovative scholarship with the "metacriticism" that many critics advocate in all literary study, is directed both the students of literature and to scholars who wish to expand their knowledge of the many different areas of theoretical inquiry that comediantes are currently exploring."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Defending Innovation

Download or read book Defending Innovation written by Anthony John Grubbs and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation and conflict have always characterized early modern Spanish theater. The dramatic text, transformed and reincarnated with each interpretation onstage, was in a constant state of flux in the Golden Age and a number of dramatic poets of the day wrote both for the stage and about the changes it was undergoing. My research examines the relationship between theatrical practice, performance and audience reception, as well as their influence on theatrical poetics. I utilize recent performance and reception theories from such scholars as Elin Diamond, Herbert Blau, Susan Bennett, and Hans Robert Jauss, to name a few, as the primary theoretical bases for an exploration of the early modern Spanish dramatic tradition. Finally, I analyze the interrelationship between theory and practice by juxtaposing six playwrights' treatises defending their originality on the boards with a representative play from each one. My examination of Bartolome de Torres Naharro's Prohemio of the Propalladia (1517) in relation to the Comedia Ymenea (1516), as well as Juan de la Cueva's Exemplar poetico (1606) and the Comedia del infamador (1581), illustrates how initial interest in performance and reception shaped both dramatic practice and theory in sixteenth-century Spain. I then move to the Spanish Comedia, looking at Lope de Vega's Arte nuevo (1609) and Tirso de Molina's Los cigarrales de Toledo (1624) with relation to Lo fingido verdadero (1607--08) and El vergonzoso en palacio (c. 1611), respectively. Finally, with regard to the ways in which performance and audience reception affect the production of the auto sacramental and court drama, I study Pedro Calderon de la Barca's dramatic precepts, found in the prologue to his collection of autos (1677), and their further development in La segunda esposa o triunfar muriendo (c. 1649); then, I present a discussion of Francisco Antonio de Bances Candamo's dramatic treatise Theatro de los theatros (1689--94) and focus on the traditions of court theater seen in Duelos de Ingenio y Fortuna (1686). These six early modern writers remind us that theater is the most public and revealing of all the arts since an active and interactive audience is a dynamic requisite element of its conception.

Book excerpt: Dramatic Theory takes readers on a comprehensive journey through the rich and varied landscape of dramatic theory. Organized by key topics and presented chronologically, this book connects writers and theorists across different eras, revealing how their discussions have evolved and intertwined. Six fundamental questions are explored, ranging from the nature and purpose of theatre to the implications of performance on society. Each chapter delves into these essential questions, offering insights into how theoretical discourse has influenced theatrical styles and practices over time. From Aristotle's foundational Poetics to avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, Dramatic Theory covers a wide array of perspectives and debates. Issues of identity, the political implications of performance, and the subjective nature of theatrical quality are thoroughly examined. The book also investigates how meaning is constructed on stage and explores modern performance theory's redefinition of theatre. By engaging with the vibrant, never-ending conversations of dramatic theory, this text inspires a deeper understanding and appreciation of the performing arts.

Book Spanish Drama of the Golden Age

Download or read book Spanish Drama of the Golden Age written by Margaret Wilson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Drama of the Golden Age describes this little-known field of European drama. This book describes and analyzes Spanish plays and drama. It reviews the Spanish plays from the 1580s to the death of Pedro Calderon de la Barca in 1681. This text also discusses the controversy to which direction the Spanish theater would take: whether it is for entertainment or a representation of the intellect and emotions. This book describes Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and the rise of the Spanish comedia. The text describes how Lope wrote his plays and how he sold them outright to the manager of an acting company, which became its property. The text also describes the life of Tirso de Molina who was often criticized for his cavalier treatment of a historical fact. This book also discusses the works of Ruiz de Alarcon, Guillen de Castro, Velez de Guevara, and Mira de Amescua. This book also assess this period of Spanish drama in terms of the influence of other countries in Europe such as Britain and France. This book can prove valuable for university students of Spanish, Spanish literature teachers to students of sixth forms, and Spanish historians.
