Book Don t Play on the Trestle

Download or read book Don t Play on the Trestle written by John J. Bowman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I want to introduce myself to the world. Hi my name is Ritchie C. Mcphee Sr. Bahamian by birth, but still just a mortal human being, A MAN, a man like any other man. This is not a memoir, just me looking at the world through my eyes. This is just an insight into the way I think, the way I reason, the way I rationalize, and try to make sense of this world that we live in. Some of you might be surprised at my interpretation of what I'm seeing, some might be in denial, while others might have the same interpretations, and simply just don't care. All I want to do is raise the conscious thinking of man, and hopefully learn a little more about myself as I grow through this book.

Book These Stories I Lived

Download or read book These Stories I Lived written by Hazel Juanita Winters Collins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These stories by Hazel Juanita Winters Collins will take you back to a horse-and-buggy time, the early automobile, prerefrigeration, moonshine, and the one-room schoolhouse. For this was the time of Ms. Collins’s youth, a time when she was between the ages of five and thirteen, the period 1924 to 1932. From recollections in her mature years, we learn about the many people she knew and grew up with on her parents’ plantation farm in South Georgia—parents Ruth and Clower; sisters Claudene and Sarah; black Irish aunt Min; a specially gifted child named Angel; uncles Clarence and Willis; cousins Epp, Ellick, Junior, and Frances; and the many black people she loved and admired, including Isabella and Allen, Uncle Gus and Aunt Mary, Mousie, Ed, Sugar, Alice, Lizzer, and Uncle Alp. Then there were the Bruces, who arrived from New York City. Like Uncle Gus and Aunt Mary before them, and Mousie and Ed later, they took up residence at the Creek House. For the year they were there, sons Ben, Bo, and Boaz got into so much trouble for their lack of knowledge about undomesticated animals, it might have spelled their doom.

Book Empathy as Dialogue in Theatre and Performance

Download or read book Empathy as Dialogue in Theatre and Performance written by Lindsay B. Cummings and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empathy has provoked equal measures of excitement and controversy in recent years. For some, empathy is crucial to understanding others, helping us bridge social and cultural differences. For others, empathy is nothing but a misguided assumption of access to the minds of others. In this book, Cummings argues that empathy comes in many forms, some helpful to understanding others and some detrimental. Tracing empathy’s genealogy through aesthetic theory, philosophy, psychology, and performance theory, Cummings illustrates how theatre artists and scholars have often overlooked the dynamic potential of empathy by focusing on its more “monologic” forms, in which spectators either project their point of view onto characters or passively identify with them. This book therefore explores how empathy is most effective when it functions as a dialogue, along with how theatre and performance can utilise the live, emergent exchange between bodies in space to encourage more dynamic, dialogic encounters between performers and audience.

Download or read book Guardian of the Sea written by John R. K. Clark and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jizo, one of the most beloved Buddhist deities in Japan, is known primarily as the guardian of children and travelers. In coastal areas, fishermen and swimmers also look to him for protection. Soon after their arrival in the late 1800s, issei (first-generation Japanese) shoreline fishermen began casting for ulua on Hawai‘i’s treacherous sea cliffs, where they risked being swept off the rocky ledges. In response to numerous drownings, Jizo statues were erected near dangerous fishing and swimming sites, including popular Bamboo Ridge, near the Blowhole in Hawai‘i Kai; Kawaihapai Bay in Mokule‘ia; and Kawailoa Beach in Hale‘iwa. Guardian of the Sea tells the story of a compassionate group of men who raised these statues as a service to their communities. Written by an authority on Hawai‘i’s beaches and water safety, Guardian of the Sea shines a light on a little-known facet of Hawai‘i’s past. It incorporates valuable firsthand accounts taken from interviews with nisei (second-generation) fishermen and residents and articles from Japanese language newspapers dating as far back as the early 1900s. In addition to background information on Jizo as a guardian deity and historical details on Jizo statues in Hawai‘i, the author discusses shorecasting techniques and organizations, which once played a key role in the lives of local Japanese. Although shorecasting today is done more for sport than subsistence, it remains an important ocean activity in the Islands. In examining Jizo and the lives of issei, Guardian of the Sea makes a significant contribution to our understanding of recent Hawai‘i history.
