Book The Jackson Heights Project the Devastation of an Innocent Family

Download or read book The Jackson Heights Project the Devastation of an Innocent Family written by Jo Anne Meadows and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Jackson Heights Project, author Jo Anne Meadows pours out her heart about her struggles, trauma, and unforgettable experiences of her life and the life of her late dad. Throughout this memoir, Jo Anne shares what happened to her and her family as a result of living with an alcoholic and abusive dad. Her family was torn apart due to her dads illness and by certain people who were envious of him and a negative influence in his life. Jo Anne decided to write, and she titled her book The Jackson Heights Project because this is where she lived and grew up with her mom, dad, and seven siblings during the good and bad times of their lives. She regrets the life her family had after her dad started drinking and physically abusing her mom who did not deserve this type of treatment. Jo Annes dad was a hard worker, however, and was well known as a great gospel singer in the group the Valley Spiritual Singers. Jo Anne believes her dad would have had a great future with his gospel career if he had not started drinking. One day while performing at a gig, one of the greatest gospel groups of all-time the Mighty Clouds of Joy heard him sing and asked him to come join their group. He declined and gave up on everything he worked so hard for as his life fell into a downward spiral. In The Jackson Heights Project, readers will discover how this family managed to deal with the negative effects of alcoholism and what their lives were like after their various experiences of the devastation as an innocent family. Jo Anne currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with a family of her own and is still healing from her past. Sharing her story in the pages of this book has been very therapeutic. She dedicates this book to her late dad, Mr. Joseph Joe Meadows Sr. (April 1, 1936November 4, 1983).

Book Full of Heart

Download or read book Full of Heart written by J.R. Martinez and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspirational journey from tragedy to triumph In 2003, nineteen-year-old Private J.R. Martinez was on a routine patrol when the Humvee he was driving hit an antitank mine in Iraq, resulting in severe injuries and burns on his face and more than one-third of his body. Out of that tragedy came an improbable journey of inspiration, motivation, and dreams come true. In Full of Heart, Martinez shares his story in intimate detail, from his upbringing in the American South and his time in the Army to his recovery and the indomitable spirit that has made him an inspiration to countless fans. J.R. Martinez always had a strong spirit. Raised in Bossier City, Louisiana, and then Hope, Arkansas, by a single mother from El Salvador, he was well known at school for his good looks and his smart mouth. At seventeen, showing an early determination and drive that would become one of his trademark qualities, J.R. convinced his mom to move to Dalton, Georgia, where he believed he would have a better chance of being recruited to play college football. His positive attitude earned him a spot on a competitive high school football squad, but when his college dreams collapsed, he turned to the U.S. Army. A few months later, he found himself serving in Iraq. When J.R.'s humvee hit a mine and exploded -- just one month into his deployment—he was immediately evacuated to a San Antonio medical center, where he spent the next thirty-four months in grueling recovery. Seeing his disfigured face for the first time after the accident threw him into a crushing period of confusion and anger. His spirits were low, until he was asked to speak to another young burn victim. J.R. realized how valuable and gratifying it was to share his experiences with other patients and listen to theirs. He’d found a calling. His fellow soldiers, along with the local and then national media, soon latched onto J.R.’s spirit and strength. His resilience, optimism, and charm were also noted by Hollywood and scored him roles on All My Children and Dancing with the Stars, where he was the season thirteen champion. Today, J.R. tours the country sharing his story and his lessons for overcoming challenges and embracing hope, lessons that abound in this book. Full of Heart is an unforgettable story of a man who never gave up on his dreams. After being injured in Iraq, J.R. Martinez became a motivational speaker, actor, and winner of season thirteen of Dancing with the Stars. Martinez lives in Los Angeles

Book Drowning in a Mother s Womb

Download or read book Drowning in a Mother s Womb written by Ciara L. Anderson and published by Ciara Anderson. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drowning in a Mother's Womb approaches the story of a tumultuous childhood of a young girl in her own words, emotions and feelings. As she relives the horrific incidents of violent abuse, you will empathize with her every struggle and hang on her every word spoken in the language and culture of her experience. The most vital messages from her story are that regardless of the circumstances and situations that this young girl faced, having lived a most colorful life by the age of 13, she found herself drowning in her own resentment for a mother who never felt any remorse for her negligent parenting. Therefore, the girl continued to press toward her future, grasping at any and every place for help. When she least expected it, her broken spirit gave way to what felt like the walls of her mind closing in on her, and she found herself in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital. Ciara allows the reader to identify with a child's need to be nurtured and supported even when the nurturer remains absent and unsupportive.

Book Under His Wings

Download or read book Under His Wings written by Bartolomea Agatep-Enrico and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story that follows is one woman's struggles both with regard to conflicts with the larger society and within the culture of the family. From her early experiences entertaining the Japanese troops right through her educational and family experiences she is encouraged to adapt, to fit in. How does an independent thinker with strong ideas and dreams work out an adaptation when they become conscious of inconsistencies in their family or culture? When the overriding message is to be obedient/subservient, how do you ignore or keep quiet about problems that you see and need addressing? When you are reared under strict parentage and your life is planned for you, what do you do when you have ideas of your own? How do you find your voice when it is discouraged at almost every turn? Mea's story is one that explores those very issues as she recounts her life experiences. It is an introspective look at how she has managed to reconcile a variety of conflicts and come through it as a stronger person both a part of her culture and be an inspiration to any of us who have found ourselves at odds with prevailing expectations and beliefs. - Edmund S. Bienkowski, Ph.D.

Book Steering Truth

Download or read book Steering Truth written by Buell Wesley Frazier and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the afternoon of November 22, 1963, a nineteen-year-old Buell Wesley Frazier was thrown up against the wall by two detectives and escorted to Dallas Police Station. His coworker and sometimes passenger to and from work Lee Harvey Oswald was the presumed assassin of President John F. Kennedy and Officer J. D. Tippit. It didn’t take Buell long to figure out that he was presumed guilty by association. Buell was afraid for himself and his family. Years of emotional pain built up. He had long forgotten how to trust people. He became resentful of the police force, and he doubted whether he would be ever to hold his head up in public and see people who believed his story. In the early nineties, Buell’s life was changed forever when he met a man who would become his best friend and confidant. Over the years, Buell emerged from the shadows and slowly found the peace and self-confidence he had longed to have. At the request of some friends, he began to talk to the public. From panel discussions to classrooms, Buell was surprised to learn that there were people who not only wanted to hear his story believed him too! This turn of events caused a paradigm shift in the way Buell saw himself. As a result, he became inspired by those people to write his complete story. For the first time in fifty years, he welcomes you to be a passenger on this road trip to learn how hard work, perseverance, self-belief, and resiliency became the pillars that supported the long transition of the boy he was to the man he became.
