Book The Doctrine of the Buddha

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Buddha written by George Grimm and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1965 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition, revised and enlarged by the author himself, presents the old genuine Buddha doctrine with the aim of developing a new type of man, free from prejudices and intent on working out his own future with his self as the light. It represents not only the flower of Indian religious feeling and philosophy but also the crowning summit of religious introspection in general. The book deals with Truth as the theme and basis of the doctrine of the Buddha. It explains (1) Truth, Critrine, World and subject of suffering, (2) Truth of the arising of suffering, (3) Truth of the annihilation of suffering, (4) Truth of the path leading to the annihilation of suffering. The author presents the highest knowledge, the supreme reality to which Buddha is awakened, in so cogent a form, free from mythological and mythical clothing that it becomes positively self-evident to the reader. The study is prefixed with an Introduction and Appendix--as important as the text itself. Introduction answers the queries 'Who was the Buddha?' 'What is a Buddha?' and depicts the method of handing down the 'Marvel'. The Appendix deals with the Doctrine, the Metaphysics of the Buddha, Right cognition etc. There are four indexes: (1) Index of quotations from the Pali texts, (2) General Index, (3) Index of proper names (4) Pali and Sanskrit Index. An exhaustive Bibliography supplies the gap in our knowledge of Buddhist literature.

Book excerpt: The Doctrine of the Buddha is the fruit of George Grimm's intensive studies and practical realization of the Buddha's teaching on the nature of reality and the self. First published in German in 1915, SunWise Books is pleased to offer this new printing of the 1st English edition, completely re-typeset and re-edited. With abundant references to the Pali Nikayas, the oldest Buddhist scriptures, the author masterfully lays out the core of the original Buddhist doctrine, showing how key ideas like Anatta or "not-self" have been grossly misunderstood and misinterpreted by subsequent generations. The Doctrine of the Buddha is essential reading for students of Buddhism and for all seekers of Truth. About the Author: After completing his theological studies, George Grimm (1846-1945) devoted himself to jurisprudence and was characterized as 'Bavaria's most benevolent judge'. His interest in philosophical problems led him to study Schopenhauer's works, which in turn led him to Indological studies. In 1921 he founded the 'Altbuddhistische Gemeinde', (Old Buddhist Community). He spent the last twelve years of his life in the rural stillness of Upper Bavaria.

Book Why Buddhism The Evil of Religion

Download or read book Why Buddhism The Evil of Religion written by Joseph T. Arellano and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work supports the proposition that the eradication of religion will make us live as one, and there is only one way to remove religion and that is to remove the need for it. Armed only with reason, this work will prove that due to ignorance religion is just an invention to fill a need. This work has three segments. The first explores - from the point of view of a Christian-practicing Pagan - the process on how myth became reality. It will prove that God was invented, and re-invented perpetually, for necessity and convenience. It is that need that gave the bible its religious relevance. Understood with a naked mind, the bible is far from being just a religious document but a political one. This work explores why religion and politics cannot and will not separate. Hence, unavoidably, it dipped its hands into one painful political issue - the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The second part elucidates that if the foundation is a myth it only follows that what was founded on it - Jesus - is a lie. It will give proof to the fact that the New Testament was manipulated to further vested interest. Understood with an unconditioned mind, that is, without the traditional spirituality attached to it, it will prove that Jesus is just selfishly scheming to regain his grandfather David's throne; it will also prove that Jesus is gay. The last part is my way of introducing Buddhism. It could shed light to what Western science is exiting themselves about. It answers why man will never find the Missing Link. It explains how and why advanced civilizations deteriorated to their present state. In our fight against virus causing disease we must explore all avenues to defeat it, Buddhism offers one. Buddhism is not only about science, it is also about religion; it delves into the reality of a soul. Buddhism gives us reason on why we must discriminate on account of race, or for any other reason.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries, moral philosophers, both Eastern and Western, considered a permanent and eternal law a necessary requirement for the formulation of a moral principle. If such a law was not empirically given, it had to be determined through reason. In contrast, early Buddhism presented a radical theory of impermanence. Interpreters of early Buddhism have been unable to abandon the presupposition of permanence, however, and hence have persisted in viewing nirvana or freedom as a permanent and eternal state to be contrasted with the impermanent world of sensory experience and bondage. Ethics in Early Buddhism is David J. Kalupahana's balanced and brilliantly concise attempt to place the early Buddhist descriptions of the world of experience, the state of freedom, and the moral principle leading to such freedom within the framework of impermanence.
