Download or read book Lions and Tigers and Cong written by Theodore Wild and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen years old, author Theodore Wild volunteered for the draft. Promised a two-year commitment rather than the requisite three for an enlisted soldier, he harbored no illusions about where he'd be going. He was shipped to South Vietnam with Charlie Company 5/46 Infantry and later transferred to Bravo Company 4/21st Infantry, Big Bad Bravo. In Lions and Tigers and Cong, he narrates a compendium of times, places, and people who shared his journey from boy to man, a journey that lasted twenty-two months. Raw and evocative, Lions and Tigers and Cong offers a firsthand account of the day-to-day lives of young American soldiers. It draws from personal experience as well as shares stories, legends, tales, and remembrances of those who fought in Vietnam's jungles, mountains, and rice paddies. This is the story of a group of men whose love for one another and need for one another were eclipsed only by the danger that shaped their lives.

Book excerpt: BLIZZARDS, BEARS, AND BARROOM BRAWLS Disgraced sheriff’s deputy Ruth Cortez never thought she’d be a wanted fugitive. She certainly never expected to be facing the End Times with nothing but an old flintlock and a dead man’s boots. But someone has to stop the snake-handling Reverend Jolly before he recruits the most infamous outlaws in the Northern Territory to terrorize her hometown. With luck, she can stay one step ahead of her lover-turned-enemy Marshal Sebastian Hardin—and keep the irrepressible Lee Merriweather from landing them all in even deeper trouble. When Ruth, Lee and the train cook Ned Carver roll into Hatchet, the Wickedest Little Town in the N.T., all their plans go sideways. Something is terribly wrong with Ruth’s cantankerous phantom, Doc. And an unexpected betrayal leaves them in their tightest spot yet. Things are looking decidedly grim when evil forces descend on the isolated town of Lucky Boy. But as they say on the prairie, a pair of six-shooters beats a pair of sixes—and Hell hath no fury like a woman defending her home.
Download or read book Secondary Superheroes of Golden Age Comics written by Lou Mougin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Superman debuted in 1938, he ushered in a string of imitators--Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Captain America. But what about the many less well-known heroes who lined up to fight crooks, super villains or Hitler--like the Shield, the Black Terror, Crimebuster, Cat-Man, Dynamic Man, the Blue Beetle, the Black Cat and even Frankenstein? These and other four-color fighters crowded the newsstands from the late 1930s through the early 1950s. Most have since been overlooked, and not necessarily because they were victims of poor publication. This book gives the other superheroes of the Golden Age of comics their due.

The Carnarvons want him dead or alive – and with Lee’s attitude, the first seems most likely. The trail south runs straight through two thousand miles of badlands. To find him, Ruth and Sebastian must survive sabotage, bloodthirsty bandits, and fresh horrors at the Reverend Jolly’s church in New Jerusalem. The hardships draw them into a passionate affair, but loyalties are put to the test when they finally reach the capital of Aguadulce and all hell breaks loose. Ruth has privately vowed to stop Sebastian from killing Lee, even as the young savant seems bent on his own destruction. And he’s just a pawn in a game with higher stakes than anyone realizes. One that goes beyond empires. One that encompasses worlds. The phantoms are the key. But can Ruth uncover the truth in time to save them all?

Download or read book 12 20 5 written by John A. Parrish and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wry and heart-wrenching memoir of a young doctor’s year behind the frontlines in Vietnam. Assigned to the marine camp at Phu Bai, Dr. John A. Parrish confronted all manner of medical trauma, quickly shedding the naïveté of a new medical intern. With this memoir, he crafts a haunting, humane portrait of one man’s agonizing confrontation with war. With a wife and two children awaiting his return home, the young physician lives through the most turbulent and formative year of his life—and finds himself molded into a true doctor by the raw tragedy of the battlefield. His endless work is punctuated only by the arrival of the next helicopter bearing more casualties, and the stark announcements: “12 litter-borne wounded, 20 ambulatory wounded, and 5 dead.” 12, 20 & 5 is an intimate and unique look at the effects of war that Library Journal calls “an autobiographical M*A*S*H* . . . phenomenal.”

Download or read book Computed Tomography written by Per Christian Hansen and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2021-09-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes fundamental computational methods for image reconstruction in computed tomography (CT) with a focus on a pedagogical presentation of these methods and their underlying concepts. Insights into the advantages, limitations, and theoretical and computational aspects of the methods are included, giving a balanced presentation that allows readers to understand and implement CT reconstruction algorithms. Unique in its emphasis on the interplay between modeling, computing, and algorithm development, Computed Tomography: Algorithms, Insight, and Just Enough Theory develops the mathematical and computational aspects of three main classes of reconstruction methods: classical filtered back-projection, algebraic iterative methods, and variational methods based on nonlinear numerical optimization algorithms. It spotlights the link between CT and numerical methods, which is rarely discussed in current literature, and describes the effects of incomplete data using both microlocal analysis and singular value decomposition (SVD). This book sets the stage for further exploration of CT algorithms. Readers will be able to grasp the underlying mathematical models to motivate and derive the basic principles of CT reconstruction and will gain basic understanding of fundamental computational challenges of CT, such as the influence of noisy and incomplete data, as well as the reconstruction capabilities and the convergence of the iterative algorithms. Exercises using MATLAB are included, allowing readers to experiment with the algorithms and making the book suitable for teaching and self-study. Computed Tomography: Algorithms, Insight, and Just Enough Theory is primarily aimed at students, researchers, and practitioners interested in the computational aspects of X-ray CT and is also relevant for anyone working with other forms of tomography, such as neutron and electron tomography, that share the same mathematical formulation. With its basis in lecture notes developed for a PhD course, it is appropriate as a textbook for courses on computational methods for X-ray CT and computational methods for inverse problems.
