Book Do Economic Regions Have Core Competences Public Private Collaborations and Regional Competitive Advantage

Download or read book Do Economic Regions Have Core Competences Public Private Collaborations and Regional Competitive Advantage written by Jeff Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over the nature and dynamics of national economic competitiveness has devolved somewhat into a discussion about regional economic competitiveness. Is 'regional competitive advantage' a useful concept in studying growth and prosperity? Are regional institutions capable of building unique competitive advantages in their constituent communities? Do regions have the ability to compete in the global marketplace in a manner different from nations? If we answer these questions in the affirmative, what is the nature of regional competitive advantage? Past studies of regional industry clusters focused on the purely empirical problem of identifying, characterizing and measuring these clusters. Only recently have studies investigated the underpinnings of these clusters in a theory-driven manner. This paper presents an argument that an economic region can have differentiated competences, rooted in the particular human and intellectual capital assets located there. Creating and executing a regional strategy which leverages those competences requires a particular form of public-private collaboration. Exploratory case studies of such regional institutions provide early evidence of how these collaborations support regional competitive advantage.

Book Regional Competitiveness

Download or read book Regional Competitiveness written by Ron Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now a wide spread interest in regions as a key focus in the organization and governance of economic growth and wealth creation. This important book considers the factors that influence and shape the competitive performance of regions. This is not just an issue of academic interest and debate, but also of increasing policy deliberation and action. However, as the readings in this book make clear, the very idea of regional competitiveness is itself complex and contentious. Many academics and policy makers have used the concept without fully considering what is meant by the term and how it can be measured. Policy formulation has tended to rush ahead of understanding and analysis, and the purpose of this book is to close this important gap in understanding. This book was previously published as a special issue of Regional Studies.

Book Regions Globalization and the Knowledge Based Economy

Download or read book Regions Globalization and the Knowledge Based Economy written by John H. Dunning and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-09-21 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the links between the impact of increasing globalization and the advent of the knowledge economy on the spatial distribution of economic activity? How can we explain the paradox of growing trans-nationalization of the production of goods and services and the tendency for certain kinds of activity–particularly knowledge intensive activities - to be concentrated or clustered in one place? In this changing environment how do firms make decisions about location, and the development and deployment of their distinctive capabilities? These are some of the important questions addressed in this volume by a team of leading international scholars looking at these dynamics in broad scope. The book presents different disciplinary approaches to the knowledge economy viewed from an international perspective, and includes detailed case analysis of its impact in different parts of the world. It moves between the supra- national macro region and the micro cluster, as well as looking at associated infrastructural and policy responses. This is a rich and informative book that attempts to explain some of the key dynamics and characteristics of the new global economy. It will be essential reading for academics in business, economics, geography and political science wanting to get to grips with current thinking and developments.

Book The Global Competitiveness of Regions

Download or read book The Global Competitiveness of Regions written by Robert Huggins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to consider theoretically the notion of the global competitiveness of regions, as well as giving attention as to how such competitiveness may be empirically measured. With this in mind, the book has three specific objectives: first, to place the concept of regional competitiveness within the context of regional economic development theory; second, to present a rationale and method for quantifying the global competitiveness of regions; and, third, to undertake the most geographically widespread analysis of regional competitiveness differences across the globe. With regard to the third goal, the analysis incorporates more than 500 regions across Europe, North and South America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the so-called BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The importance of the concept of competitiveness has increased rapidly in recent years, with the issues surrounding it becoming, at the same time, more empirically refined and theoretically complex. The focus on regions reflects the growing consensus that they are the primary spatial units that compete to attract investment, and it is at the regional level that knowledge is circulated and transferred, resulting in agglomerations, or clusters, of industrial and service sector enterprises. This growing acknowledgement of the region’s role as a key spatial unit of organisation has led to attention turning to competitiveness at a more regional level. The book explores the results of the World Competitiveness Index of Regions (WCIR), covering the rankings and results of the 2014 edition. The WCIR provides a tool for analysing the development of a range of regional economies across the globe. It enables an illustration of the changing patterns of regional competitiveness on the international stage to be generated. In fundamental terms, the WCIR aims to produce an integrated and overall benchmark of the knowledge capacity, capability, and sustainability of each region, and the extent to which this knowledge is translated into economic value and transferred into the wealth of the citizens of each region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many parts of the world are currently experiencing the outcome of processes of economic integration, globalization and transformation. Technological advances in telecommunications and in transport facilities have opened up new possibilities for contracts and exchanges among regions. External effects among regions have increased in importance. As a result, competition among regions has intensified. Except some pioneering work by regional scientists and scholars of public finance and economics, the phenomenon of regional competition has yet to attract the attention it warrants, despite its importance for policy-making. The present volume is intended to remedy this neglect by providing high-level contributions to the three main topics of the book, the theory of regional competition, methods of analysis of regional competition and policies of regional competition.

Book Regional Policies and Comparative Advantage

Download or read book Regional Policies and Comparative Advantage written by B”rje Johansson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title analyzes the conception of economic development in modern regions, which has gone through a fundamental change since the early 1980s. Regions are today increasingly looked upon as independant market places that are connected via interregional and international trade and not as administrative units embodied in a national state. Two complementary theoretical frameworks explain the specialization of economic activity at the regional level. The traditional approach assumes that the comparative advantages of regions depend upon differences in the supply of lasting resources. In contrast the newer complementary framework called the "new economic georgraphy", assumes that the dynamic interaction between geographical market potentials and rational firms in its own way creates the comparative advantage of regions. The book examines the policy implications of the complementarity of the competing views in a variety of geographic and functional contexts.

Book The New Regionalism and the Role of Partnerships in Regional Economic Development Strategies

Download or read book The New Regionalism and the Role of Partnerships in Regional Economic Development Strategies written by Chris McDonald (Urban geographer) and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partnerships between business, third sector organizations and communities have becomean increasingly important part of government strategies to promote regional economic development. The association between these partnerships and the economic development of regions is at present unclear. There are contrasting views as to whether partnerships build competitive advantage or instead reflect a neoliberal policy agenda of reducing government protection and investment. This debate is centered on agency: the possibilities and limitations of partnerships as a means of promoting regional economic development. This inquiry centres on the following key research question: do partnerships promote regional economic development and if so, who shapes this agency? I use the New Regionalism (NR) as an entry point for my inquiry because it supports anargument that partnerships increase the capacity of social actors to influence regional economic development in the context of a globally competitive economy. I engage critically with the NR and seek to clarify positive and negative views about the role of partnerships in regional economic development. My theoretical framework begins by reviewing the literature about regional development in a globally competitive economy, and identifying which actors have the power to influence outcomes in this context. I then review the literature about partnerships and argue that they enhance collective efficacy and build political capital to influence regional development. Case studies of two regions that have experienced rapid socio-economic change - the East Midlands and Leicestershire in the United Kingdom, and the Cradle Coast region in Tasmania - have been selected. Using interviews and document analysis, I examine the role of partnerships in promoting development within these regions. I contribute to knowledge by finding that these partnerships generate collective efficacy and build political capital, which in turn stimulates value creation and enhancement in these regions. The role of these partnerships is primarily shaped by the constraints of a globally competitive economy and the material interests of local civic and business leaders. I develop a theoretical framework that can help explain the association between partnerships and the economic development of regions.
