The conclusion of the report outlines an evolutionary approach to the development of a true method for the design of distributed real time systems. It identifies two parallel threads of effort which need to be pursued. The first, developing a calculus of operational requirements, will provide a means of specifying and reasoning about the various requirements. Work in this area could best build on an existing method, progressively enhancing it to cope with the full range of distributed system requirements. The second thread consists of (relatively informal) experimentation with the method as it evolves, exploiting our current understanding and appreciation of the fundamental technical issues of distributed systems. This will feed back into the development of the method itself, by providing a better appreciation of the way in which operational requirements can be addressed.
