Book excerpt: Rick "Dickie" Duncan is turning fifty. Meh. On the eve of this mid-century milestone, he finds himself alone in his mother's Ottawa basement, surrounded by gaudy decor and a carpet that hasn't been raked in years. Grabbing some brews and frozen hotdogs, Rick rummages through the clutter that's made up his dissatisfied life. From the death of Santa to the last days of Scottish Rot, Rick meanders through the decades, mapping his existence amid the pop culture of the '70s to the present day. Marking key moments of his unsated misadventures and real-life dating disasters, Rick reminds himself that his journey is a love story. Sort of.

During the course of our lives, we can develop dangerous faultlines and crevasses in our inner emotional landscapes due to past hurts, losses and disappointments. Lovelands is psychologist Dr Debra Campbell’s map for traversing the treacherous terrain of love and cultivating the wisdom and self-compassion for healthy love relationships. Drawing on her own knowledge and experiences of dysfunctional love relationships throughout her life and work, Dr Campbell shows you how to become aware of your personal Lovelands so you can locate and identify your faultlines, avoid repeating negative patterns and become empowered to make different choices. Whether you’re a parent to others, a lover to another, or working on the care of your own soul, Lovelands will help you make sense of love, from birth to death, and guide you in claiming the role of the hero of your own life and sovereign of your own Lovelands.

Download or read book Being Dissatisfied written by Pratik 'Bharat' Palor and published by BlueRose Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you feel that this book will somehow give you a solution to any of your problems, I am extremely sorry but that’s neither the intent nor the content. In fact, I will be very frank and advise you to stay away from such superficial words like "solution". If at all there was any solution to anything in life, what’s the whole struggle all about! Only a handful of people could ever attempt to seek ultimate solutions and they had to give up everything else. When you have nothing, you have no issues or problems or challenges or dissatisfaction. If that sounds like your idea of solution, or anybody’s idea of solution for you, its implementation would result in irrelevance of your existence.

Book Little Madnesses

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Little Madnesses written by Annette Kuhn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Little madnesses' are our most deeply felt enthusiasms, investments and attachments in the sphere of culture. The term was coined by the child psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, whose work on transitional phenomena grew out of his naming of the transitional object, and extended into preliminary explorations of the crucial role played by cultural experience in a life that feels satisfying. In our socially and culturally sanctioned little madnesses, everyone can find relief from the burden of having to maintain a clear boundary between inner and outer worlds, fantasy and reality, because it is in the space between them that we can find the enthusiasms and passions that excite our creative imaginations. This idea offers intriguing pathways towards understanding how we can engage effectively with the world at a public, social level without setting aside our inner lives, our emotions and our most deeply felt attachments. In Little Madnesses, writers, artists, scholars and experts in a range of fields and disciplines explore the idea of transitional phenomena and consider its potential to extend and deepen our understanding of cultural experience in mental and social life, focusing on the importance of space, place and boundaries in cultural experience; on how we can negotiate media use and cultural identity; and on the aesthetic and creative aspects of cultural experience. Topics covered include cult films, computer use, installation art, trips to the cinema, museums and galleries, the agony and ecstasy of making art and the significance of life stage in cultural experience.

Book Life Of Galileo

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bertolt Brecht
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2015-04-23
  • ISBN : 147253803X
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Life Of Galileo written by Bertolt Brecht and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with Mother Courage, the character of Galileo is one of Brecht's greatest creations, immensely live, human and complex. Unable to resist his appetite for scientific investigation, Galileo's heretical discoveries about the solar system bring him to the attention of the Inquisition. He is scared into publicly abjuring his theories but, despite his self-contempt, goes on working in private, eventually helping to smuggle his writings out of the country. As an examination of the problems that face not only the scientist but also the whole spirit of free inquiry when brought into conflict with the requirements of government or official ideology, Life of Galileo has few equals. Written in exile in 1937-9 and first performed in Zurich in 1943, Galileo was first staged in English in 1947 by Joseph Losey in a version jointly prepared by Brecht and Charles Laughton, who played the title role. Printed here is the complete translation by Brecht scholar John Willett. The much shorter Laughton version is also included in full as an appendix, along with Brecht's own copious notes on the play making this the most trusted scholarly edition of the text.
