Download or read book A Vital Rationalist written by Georges Canguilhem and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-04 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Canguilhem is one of France's foremost historians of science. Trained as a medical doctor as well as a philosopher, he combined these practices to demonstrate to philosophers that there could be no epistemology without concrete study of the actual development of the sciences and to historians that there could be no worthwhile history of science without a philosophical understanding of the conceptual basis of all knowledge. A Vital Rationalist brings together for the first time a selection of Canguilhem's most important writings, including excerpts from previously unpublished manuscripts and a critical bibliography by Camille Limoges. Organized around the major themes and problems that have preoccupied Canguilhem throughout his intellectual career, the collection allows readers, whether familiar or unfamiliar with Canguilhem's work, access to a vast array of conceptual and concrete meditations on epistemology, methodology, science, and history. Canguilhem is a demanding writer, but Delaporte succeeds in marking out the main lines of his thought with unrivaled clarity; readers will come away with a heightened understanding of the complex and crucial place he holds in French intellectual history.
Download or read book The Sense of Decadence in Nineteenth Century France written by Koenraad W. Swart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was the best oftimes. It was the worst oftimes. " The famous open ing sentence ofCharles Dickens' Tale oJ Two Cities can serve as a motto to characterize the mixture of optimism and pessimism with which a large number of nineteenth-century intellectuals viewed the con dition of their age. It is nowadays hardly necessary to accentuate the optimistic elements in the nineteenth-century view of history; many recent historians have sharply contrasted the complacency and the great expectations of the past century with the fears and anxieties rampant in our own age. It is often too readily assumed that a hundred years ago all leading thinkers as weil as the educated public were addicted to the cult of progress and ignored or minimized those trends of their times that paved the way for the catastrophes of the twentieth century. In the nineteenth century the intoxicating triumphs of modern science undeniably induced the general public to believe that pro gress was not an accident but a necessity and that evil and immo rality would gradually disappear. Yet fears, misgivings, and anxieties were not as exceptional in the nineteenth century as is often imagined. Such feelings were not restricted to a few dissenting philosophers and poets like Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, 'Dostoevsky, Baudelaire, and Nietzsche.

Download or read book Time and the French Revolution written by Matthew John Shaw and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2011 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the innovation and effects of the French Republican Calendar. The French Republican Calendar was perhaps the boldest of all the reforms undertaken in Revolutionary France. Introduced in 1793 and used until 1806, the Calendar not only reformed the weeks and months of the year, but decimalisedthe hours of the day and dated the year from the beginning of the French Republic. This book not only provides a history of the calendar, but places it in the context of eighteenth-century time-consciousness, arguing that the French were adept at working within several systems of time-keeping, whether that of the Church, civil society, or the rhythms of the seasons. Developments in time-keeping technology and changes in working patterns challenged early-modern temporalities, and the new calendar can also be viewed as a step on the path toward a more modern conception of time. In this context, the creation of the calendar is viewed not just as an aspect of the broader republican programme of social, political and cultural reform, but as a reflection of a broader interest in time and the culmination of several generations' concern with how society should be policed. Matthew Shaw is a curatorat the British Library, London.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF WAVE MECHANICS. GENERAL INTRODUCTION: THE new wave mechanics has received during the past two years the firm support of experiment, thanks to the discovery of a strikingphenomenon completely unknown previously, viz. the diffraction of electrons by crystals. From one point of view it may be said that this discovery is the exact counterpart of the older discovery of the photo electric effect, since it shows that for matter as for light we have hitherto neglected one of the aspects of physical reality. The discovery of the photo-electric effect has taught us that the undulatory theory of light, firmly established by Fresnel and subsequently developed by Maxwell as the electro magnetic theory, although it contains a large body of truth, is, nevertheless, insufficient, and that it is necessary, in a certain sense, to turn again to the corpuscular conception of light proposed by Newton. Planck, in his famous theory of black body radiation, was led to assume that radiation of frequency v is always emitted and absorbed in equal and finite quantities, in quanta of magnitude hv, h being the constant with which the name of Planck will always be associated. In order to explain the photo-electric effect, Einstein had only to adopt the hypothesis, which is quite in conformity with the ideas of Planck, that light consists of corpuscles and that the energy of the cor puscles of light of frequency v is hv. When a light corpuscle in its passage through matter encounters an electron at rest, it can impart o it its energy hv and the electron thus set in 1 This introduction is the reproduction of a communication made by the author at the meeting of the British Association for the Advance ment of Science held in Glasgow in September, 1928, 1 2 An Introduction to the Study of Wave Mechanics motion will leave the matter with kinetic energy equal in amount to the differencebetween the energy hv, which it has received, and the work it has had to expend to get out of the matter. Now, this is precisely the experimental law of the photo-electric effect in the form which has been verified in succession for all the radiations from the ultra-violet region to X-and y-rays...
Download or read book The Pope s Body written by Agostino Paravicini-Bagliani and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the role traditionally fulfilled by secular rulers, the pope has been perceived as an individual person existing in a body subject to decay and death, yet at the same time a corporeal representation of Christ and the Church, eternity and salvation. Using an array of evidence from the eleventh through the fifteenth centuries, Agostino Paravicini- Bagliani addresses this paradox. He studies the rituals, metaphors, and images of the pope's body as they developed over time and shows how they resulted in the expectation that the pope's body be simultaneously physical and metaphorical. Also included is a particular emphasis on the thirteenth century when, during the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1294-1303), the papal court became the focus of medicine and the natural sciences as physicians devised ways to protect the pope's health and prolong his life. Masterfully translated from the Italian, this engaging history of the pope's body provides a new perspective for readers to understand the papacy, both historically and in our own time.
