Book Instructional Decision making Authority and Job Satisfaction of Four year Faculty by Primary Job Activity Percentage of Time Spent Teaching and Academic Discipline

Download or read book Instructional Decision making Authority and Job Satisfaction of Four year Faculty by Primary Job Activity Percentage of Time Spent Teaching and Academic Discipline written by Cheryl L. Reid and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of faculty satisfaction with instructional autonomy on overall job satisfaction. Using data from the 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty and drawing on sum-of-facets theory, this study explored the job satisfaction of full-time faculty at four-year institutions who spent part of their time on teaching activities. The study also looked at differences by primary job activity, percentage of time spent teaching, and academic discipline using Biglan's discipline classification as the conceptual framework. Results of the study indicate that faculty are satisfied with their jobs overall. Additionally, results indicate that when controlling for demographic and employment variables, differences in primary job activity, percentage of time spent teaching, and academic discipline have a small but significant effect on the amount of overall job satisfaction that can be explained by satisfaction with instructional autonomy. The study's findings have theoretical implications for those concerned with maintaining or increasing faculty job satisfaction, including college administrators, policy makers, and faculty union leaders.

Book Faculty Satisfaction in University Departments

Download or read book Faculty Satisfaction in University Departments written by David B. Allen and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study compares academic areas in terms of: How faculty members allocate their time to undergraduate teaching, graduate training, and research; how faculty rate the relative importance of each of these tasks; and the degree to which faculty depend upon mechanical and electronic equipment, computers, statistics, and mathematics. The second part of the study examines how these characteristics of university departments contribute to faculty satisfaction in various academic areas. Results based on questionnaire responses of 287 faculty in 38 departments corroborate previous findings that areas differ with respect to a number of functions and activities. Allocation of time, ratings of importance, and dependence on tools and services are shown to moderate the relationship between satisfaction with particular facets of departments and overall faculty satisfaction. The implications of the findings for both theories of job satisfaction and the administration of university departments are discussed. (Author).

This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Providing an accessible analysis, this book will be important to public health policy-makers and practitioners, business and community leaders, health advocates, educators and journalists.

Book Correlation Between Faculty Satisfaction and Student Satisfaction in Higher Education

Download or read book Correlation Between Faculty Satisfaction and Student Satisfaction in Higher Education written by Kristin A. Kroncke and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In an effort to stay competitive in the increasingly more challenging business world, companies are constantly trying to develop new ways in which to improve their organizations. One way to accomplish this is by improving overall employee satisfaction, which has been found to be correlated with increased customer satisfaction, and increased profits. Thus, by gaining a greater understanding of their employees' perceived level of satisfaction, and by working toward enhancing it, organizations should be able to better serve their customers. While the evidence on higher employee satisfaction being correlated with greater customer satisfaction is presented in the literature, it is mostly anecdotal. Further, research has not looked into various facets of employee satisfaction and how they relate to various facets of customer satisfaction. Finally, while employee satisfaction issues have been discussed in various organizational settings, I have not been able to locate research on faculty satisfaction and its relationship to various aspects of student satisfaction in a university setting. My research seeks to examine the correlations between several aspects of faculty satisfaction and student satisfaction within a university setting. In this environment, faculty members are employees of the organization and students may be viewed as its customers. Each group derives satisfaction from different aspects of what occurs at the university, yet the satisfaction experienced by one group is expected to affect their performance, and thus the satisfaction experienced by the other group. For example, a faculty member who is happy with his or her colleagues may be motivated to do more team-teaching and enhance the learning experience (and thus satisfaction) of students. This project requires data to be gathered from two groups - faculty and students. Data on faculty satisfaction with various aspects of their job are available by department through an organization that conducts such surveys at various universities every three years. To understand student satisfaction, a survey of current undergraduate students will also be undertaken. The survey will examine student satisfaction with various aspects of their academic experience at the university. Based on the data obtained from the two surveys, we plan to compute correlations between facets of faculty satisfaction that are hypothesized to have the greatest impact on student satisfaction. I believe that this research will not only help The Ohio State University and its various departments, but also any other university that is interested in enhancing the satisfaction levels of its various constituents. University administrators can use this information to understand which aspects of their work experience faculty members of a certain department are more satisfied with and whether this has an effect on student satisfaction. This research model may be applied for further study by analyzing universities that are different than the large, urban, public university that has been surveyed in this study. The concept of correlating facets of employee satisfaction to customer satisfaction could also be applied to any organizational setting. This additional research will advance the understanding of employee and customer satisfaction and the correlations discovered through this study.

Book The Link Between Collegiality and Job Satisfaction Among Faculty

Download or read book The Link Between Collegiality and Job Satisfaction Among Faculty written by Ayrlia Welch and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collegiality has been a consistent topic in the literature in the discussion surrounding individual academic success in higher education. Researchers have explored the degree to which the collegiality of an academic department matters (Alleman and Haviland 2016; Clark and Corcoran 1986; Ponjuan, Conley, and Trower 2011; Victorino, Nylund-Gibson, Conle 2018). The topic of the larger department culture impacting an individual's career trajectory has become increasingly important as the organizational structure of academia continues to shift from majority tenure-track lines to the majority being non-tenure contract positions (Alleman and Haviland 2016; Webber and Rogers 2018). This paper will attempt to explore how different members of the university community (i.e., ranks of faculty) define collegiality, whether collegiality significantly influences job satisfaction, and whether there is variation across race, gender, and faculty rank in relation to this trend. This will be done by surveying faculty at universities in the United States and by over-sampling minority populations. By determining how different faculty define collegiality, and what constitutes a collegial department, we can further understand if increased collegiality leads to increased work satisfaction and the impact it has on academic success for non-tenured faculty and women and racial and ethnic minorities.
