Download or read book Broadband In Brazil written by Peter Knight and published by Google Access. This book was released on with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet has been a reality in Brazil for more than 20 years. Its growth has been encouraged by the government, by large telecom companies, and by small and medium Internet service providers, as well as by rapidly increasing demand. The achievements to date are clear, but almost half the population is still not participating in the digital world. Furthermore, the cost of broadband is still high and its quality should be improved so that it will be possible to take advantage of all the benefits it can bring, whether related to health, education, or even the exercise of political rights. It is necessary, therefore that the Brazilian Internet be fast, reliable, and accessible. This book brings together 23 specialists in various areas related to broadband, specialists who wanted to discuss Brazil’s public policies and regulations as well as the progress and challenges related to expanding access to broadband Internet service. The 16 chapters also address the evolution of the country’s broadband infrastructure, including experiences of entrepreneurship and public-private partnerships. This debate is fundamental for Brazil’s technological, economic and social progress.
Download or read book International Investment Law and Arbitration from a Latin American Perspective written by Nitish Monebhurrun and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2011 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: The book brings to light how Latin American states have traditionally stood before the field of International Investment Law and Arbitration. It delves into their posture of resistance to critically examine how their perspective has gradually changed and how they have adapted and molded their investment agreements so as not to leave their position as players in the field of International Investment Law. Many Latin American states have appeared as defendants before international investment tribunals and some of these, like Venezuela, Bolivia or Ecuador, have denounced their international investment agreements. Deeming the law field as imbalanced, they have looked for alternatives to continue providing legal protection to foreign investors while protecting their right to regulate in the name of public interest. Some interesting investment agreements models, sometimes of a different ilk, have consequently flourished and have arrested the attention of those studying or working with international investment law. The main objective of this book is to critically discuss how Latin American states have accepted, resisted, or adapted themselves to international investment law and arbitration. Accordingly, the general connection between these states and international investment law are explained in an introduction which examines the general trends as per which Latin American states have offered a legal protection to foreign investments. The first part enters the merits of where international investment law and arbitration stand in some Latin American states whereby the experience of Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, and Uruguay are discussed. The following parts explain the trends in international investment law and arbitration in Latin America. These trends are namely related to dispute settlement and governance, to the connection between investment law and human rights and finally to regionalization. In these parts, the experience of states like Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico are perused
Download or read book Public Procurement Regulation in a Crisis written by Sue Arrowsmith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book provides the first systematic analysis of global public procurement regulation and policy during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Through both thematic chapters and national case studies, this book: - explores the adequacy of traditional legal frameworks for emergency procurement; - examines how governments and international organisations have responded specifically to the pandemic; and - considers how the experience of the pandemic and the political impetus for reform might be leveraged to improve public procurement more broadly. Public procurement has been critical in delivering vital frontline public services both in the health sector and elsewhere, with procurement of ventilators, protective equipment and new hospitals all hitting the headlines. At the same time, procurers have faced the challenge of adjusting existing contracts to a new reality where, for example, some contracted services can no longer operate. Further, efficient and effective procurement will be an essential, and not a luxury, in the economic recovery. With case studies on Italy, the UK, the USA, India, Singapore, Africa, Latin America and China, the book brings together the world's leading academics and practitioners from across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa to examine these issues, providing an essential resource for policy makers, legislators, international organisations and academics.
Download or read book Compensation Schemes for Damages Caused by Healthcare and Alternatives to Court Proceedings written by Dobrochna Bach-Golecka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses compensation mechanisms and other non-judicial means that offer alternatives to court proceedings, designed and provided for within national legal regimes. Such schemes are primarily of a civil or administrative character and are mainly intended to supplement criminal liability for medical negligence. As such, the book focuses on medical malpractice and prospective medical harm from a civil law perspective. It examines the contemporary perspective of a patient-physician relationship, which has evolved from a relation of a quasi-patrimonial character into a partnership of quasi-equal parties, dealing with a medical treatment procedure as a scientific endeavor. It also reviews the extra-legal conditions that are taken into account in compensation arrangements, particularly the need to satisfy a psychological urge for conciliation and empathy on the part of medical personnel. Lastly, the book explores the responsibility of public authorities and healthcare providers to guarantee access to healthcare that is of a sufficient quality, based upon standards provided for in international (and European) law.
