Book excerpt: This bulletin, a joint contribution of the Bureau of Biological Survey and the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, contains a summary of the results of investigations of the relation of a subspecies of kangaroo rat to the carrying capacity of the open ranges, being one phase of a general study of the life histories of rodent groups as they affect agriculture, forestry, and grazing.

Book excerpt: Twenty morpholoigcl characters in addition to color were studied throughout the geographic range of two species of kangaroo rats, the banner-tailed kangaroo rat Dipodomys spectabilis and the desert kangaroo rat Dipodomys deserti. A total of 2725 specimens from 689 localities was examined in this study: 1,187 specimens from 368 localities for D. spectabilis and 1,538 specimens from 321 localities for D. deserti. The two species are characterized and notes are given concerning their habitat, longevity, predators, parasites, molt, and reproductive activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North American recent mammals in the United States National Museum number about 166,000 specimens, including 1,435 types. More than three-fourths of this material is in the Biological Survey collection, United States Department of Agriculture, the remainder, including the seals, sirenians, ceataceans, and all of the older, more historic specimens, is in the Museum proper. The material derived from these two sources furnishes so complete a representation of the mammals of North America that, of the 2,554 forms now recognized, only 171 are not included.

This book was released on 1912 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this bulletin is twofold: To call attention to the richness of the United States National Museum North American land mammals, and to furnish a summary of the systematic results of the study in this field to the end of the year 1911. North America is understood as the entire continent from Panama northward, together with Greenland and the Greater and Lesser Antilles. In no other museum is the mammal fauna of so large an area so fully represented.

Download or read book Rodent Societies written by Jerry O. Wolff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 1255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rodent Societies synthesizes and integrates the current state of knowledge about the social behavior of rodents, providing ecological and evolutionary contexts for understanding their societies and highlighting emerging conservation and management strategies to preserve them. It begins with a summary of the evolution, phylogeny, and biogeography of social and nonsocial rodents, providing a historical basis for comparative analyses. Subsequent sections focus on group-living rodents and characterize their reproductive behaviors, life histories and population ecology, genetics, neuroendocrine mechanisms, behavioral development, cognitive processes, communication mechanisms, cooperative and uncooperative behaviors, antipredator strategies, comparative socioecology, diseases, and conservation. Using the highly diverse and well-studied Rodentia as model systems to integrate a variety of research approaches and evolutionary theory into a unifying framework, Rodent Societies will appeal to a wide range of disciplines, both as a compendium of current research and as a stimulus for future collaborative and interdisciplinary investigations.
Download or read book Biocommunication of Animals written by Guenther Witzany and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every coordination within or between animals depends on communication processes. Although the signaling molecules, vocal and tactile signs, gestures and its combinations differ throughout all species according their evolutionary origins and variety of adaptation processes, certain levels of biocommunication can be found in all animal species: (a) Abiotic environmental indices such as temperature, light, water, etc. that affect the local ecosphere of an organism and are sensed, interpreted. (b) Trans-specific communication with non-related organisms. (c) Species-specific communication between same or related species. (d) Intraorganismic communication, i.e., sign-mediated coordination within the body of the organism. This book gives an overview of the manifold levels of animal communication exemplified by a variety of species and thereby broadens the understanding of these organisms.
